The Culture of Death works havoc in the hearts and minds of so
many today, spreading the evil message that one can exercise a choice to
kill a child as a “right” rather than the evil that is in the eyes of God. We
do not choose, however, to curse this darkness but rather prefer to light
a candle, spreading the Good News that Christ loves us; that His
children are precious in His sight; and that no matter what has gone
before, He is merciful to those who seek Him with a sincere heart. Such
is this message—the celebration, the joy of taking part in a campaign to
celebrate children: National Baby’s Day.
The entire Christian Community owes a debt of gratitude to those
who put together this project which, at its core, celebrates the gift of
life, restores the culture and heals the brokenness of those who have not
seen Christ in the faces oftheir brothers and sisters.
This project gives each of us the opportunity to be a blessing to
someone in need. 1 challenge you to make this project a working part of
the programs in your church and your community today!

“Blessed are the children for theirs is the Kingdom of God”
Matthew 19:14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not
forbid them; for of such is the kingdom ofheaven.”
I wonder how God feels about babies, yes even with babies everywhere? I can
just see God sitting in Heaven looking out over trillions ofmiles ofbeautiful
beaches, mountains lakes to His left and trillions ofmiles ofoceans and
tropical islands to His right. Then He looks at His watch, Watch! Oh yes, I
wonder ifGod keeps time and has a watch? His watch could be the birth and
death of a brilliant star which He counts as one day. Each new day He could
choose another brilliant star in a far away galaxy. Then I wonder ifHe looks
down at this little planet where humans are complaining it’s too populated, we
can’t have any more children, it’s too crowded. I wonder what God must think.
Does He wonder, “They have only a small amount oftime on earth when
compared to all of eternity? They’re only going to be there forjust a little
while, can’t they wait ‘only a millionth ofa second! ’ Especially since for the
rest of all eternity they will be here with me in Paradise.” I wonder ifGod
thinks, “besides I made human beings so I could have a loving relationship
with them who repents and accepts me as Lord.” Jesus said in John 14:2 "In my
Fathers house are many rooms" Praise God
Did we also feel it was too crowded in our mother’s womb? I can imagine the
baby thinking, “Gee, there is not enough room in here to move around.” Yet it
was in our mother’s womb that we were the closest we have ever been or will
ever be to our beloved mother that God gave us. There is a time when we must
leave our mother’s womb, but do we not always want and desire to be held in
our mother’s arms and feel the warmth ofher love? I also wonder ifGod
wanted us to experience living in close quarters to each other so that we can
also share an unconditional love for each other and experience the closeness of
other humans who are made in the image and likeness ofGod our Father.
I believe ifthere ever is a time when the earth cannot sustain and accommodate
people, then that will be the time Christ returns for His bride.
I’m sure when we see God face to face He will reveal the truth, but as we pray
and experience life here on Earth, let us be thankful and celebrate life with
joyful thanksgiving, for God loves Life.
“I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly” John 10:
10
In 1997 I was once giving a talk about Baby’s Day at a men’s fellowship in a
well to do church. The pastor asked me what the talk was about and I told him
it was about asking men to help launch a Baby’s Day. He looked at me in
astonishment and said, “You have got to be joking!” and then sternly asked
who invited me to speak. Someone yelled out, “Howard.” Someone else
yelled out, “Hey, Howard isn’t even here.” At this point I was at one ofmy
lowest points in my life. I finally started the talk, sharing about how people
always feel they cannot afford children, and ifthey have them, cannot afford
more ofthem. At the time I did not realize that the congregation ofthis church
were all very wealthy with many owing corporations and businesses like
Howard who invited me. During my talk I used an example ofwhat I thought
would be considered an extremely rich couple; I said they could never have
more than one child at this point in their lives because they were only making
$60,000 a year. Note the year was 1997. I was hoping to get some chuckles
from the audience. Instead they all looked quite complacent with the thought,
“Yes, how could someone afford more than one child with only a $60,000
annual income?” Interestingly enough, at the time our family was making
around $27,000 and we had four children; none ofthem were deprived of
shelter, food, education and most importantly love.
I later contemplated my experience with these well-to-do men. Many ofthem
had their own businesses like Howard who invited me (who owned one ofthe
largest plastic molding companies in California). Ifyou asked any ofthose
men ifthey would like to increase the size oftheir business, they would all
say, “Ofcourse, who wouldn’t?” Then why would you not want to increase
the size ofyour family? I am sure you will hear them say liability, cost
overruns; yet the joy and satisfaction ofseeing your children grow, learn, love
and accomplish achievements in life is better than any successful new product
or expansion ofone’s business.
In closing “Baby’s Day” is a men’s spirit-led movement to support mothers,
to be started/birthed in the most impoverished inner-city regions: Christian
men showing the community what true fatherhood and the responsibilities that
unbreakable marriage bonds are all about. A movement that promotes
abstinence until marriage, and the greatjoys of fatherhood which starts at the
conception oflife.
I am now older and have seen so many blessings and concluded all earthly
blessings will one day turn to sorrows, the greater the earthly blessing the
greater the sorrow, however, those who have faith in Jesus Christ will have
blessings eternally. Children are a blessing and with Christ an eternal blessing.

D
id it really happen? Is it true? Did they really say on the news that the
Supreme Court has just overturned Roe versus Wade? Are abortions
illegal again? Surely I imagined it.
Quietly I try to reconstruct the events. 1 ponder whether it was the news
broadcast I watched just before falling asleep.
Are churches across the nation declaring this day as Baby’s Day? Are
crises pregnancy centers and churches joining together across the nation to
thank God for babies and to celebrate life? Are games, toys and baby clothes
really being given away free?
It has to be true; it was so real.
I wonder what people—those neutral on the abortion issue—will think
as they see the coverage of thousands of babies being loved and enjoyed by
their parents. Babies, the opposition has claimed, are only a burden or
simply a choice. I also wonder what the Pro-Choice forces will do with this
devastating defeat. Will millions march to Washington, screaming in rage
over the Supreme Court’s decision?
Sad to say, I finally realized it was only a dream. But what a
beautiful dream!
It was a dream of a day when the silent screams of unborn children were
hushed, and in their place rang the laughter ofbabies, across the land like church
bells. A day to celebrate life prompted by the reversal ofRoe versus Wade.
But why should we wait until then?
Instead, let’s join together now and declare the victory won! As we
celebrate the victory of life, mothers who are lost or confused will come to
seek answers only found in Jesus Christ. He is the One who created life. He
can make our burdens easy, even in a crisis pregnancy. Baby’s Day is a means
for all of us—the Christian church, pregnancy crisis centers, Pro-Life
advocates, and the general public—to get involved in a positive way in the
Pro-Life issue.
We are calling for churches and Pro-Life organizations to unite now to
celebrate babies as a blessing from God. It will be an outreach to each
community, with pastors sharing the Gospel during an open-to-everyone
13

baby dedication. People will learn of the love of God and His plan for the
family. Over the course of time, our society will change from its negative
view of babies to a positive one. Let those babies who are born become our
advocates for life.
If Christ were physically on earth today, He would address the abortion
issue by lovingly holding babies, and saying as He did in Luke 9:48,
“whoever receives these little ones, receives me. ” Those newborns,
created in the image ofGod, can help to save the unborn.
Let the Pro-Choice folks focus on death; we will focus on life!

OUR NATION'S CHANGING MORALS
16
D
uring the 1950s and 60s, abortion was viewed by most people
(especially Christians) as morally wrong. Through the years more and
more people have changed their opinion. We are like sheep following our
leaders; if they say abortion is okay, they must be right. The action of
legalizing abortion preceded the belief that abortion is the right and
responsible thing to do.
We have allowed ungodly forces to change our country’s actions, and her
morals. First we sanctioned the action of abortion, then we began to
subsidize the cost of abortion. As a people, we’ve changed our beliefs to
justify the actions our country has taken. Even many Christians have
adopted the viewpoint that a woman has a right to end the life within her if
she has valid reasons.
In order for the morals of our nation to be restored and be brought into
line with the Word of God, we must take the steps necessary to please the
Father. Let’s begin by making babies a cause for celebration. Then, as others
join the celebration, or learn of it, their eyes will be opened: we cannot at
the same time kill a baby and celebrate its life.
Such is the mission of Baby’s Day: a call for all people to celebrate
together—not just Christians and Pro-Life advocates—everyone. They will
join with their children in games, rejoice with them as they play. They will
realize that children really are wonderful. They will hear that God values
these babies and that He gave His Son’s life to save them. Their
understanding will be enlightened: to kill a baby is very wrong. Nothing can
everjustify that.
Gradually the people’s morals will change.
HAVE WE ] lo
Tailed?
18 HAVE WE FAILED?
W
hile I was actively involved with Operation Rescue, a group that
organizes demonstrations outside abortion clinics, I was jailed at the
Wayside Honor Camp for blocking an abortion clinic in Los Angeles. I was
assigned to fold clothing at their laundry facility, one of the largest in the
country. Our biggest account was to clean clothing from local hospitals,
including surgical gowns for doctors and nurses.
I came up with what 1 thought was an inspiration from God: we would
fill the doctors’ uniforms with Pro-Life literature with statements such as,
“Doctors kill babies,” and “Doctors know the truth about abortions. Why
are you performing them?” We hoped doctors would read these notes and
realize abortionists were making all doctors look like murderers. We
expected that they would then seek out and humiliate the doctors who
performed abortions.
I justified this by calling it Operation Wild Flower. I figured that both
flowers and weeds are called plants; both abortionists and surgeons are called
doctors. Our mission, I said, was to separate the weeds from the flowers who
are caring and loving professionals.
My partners and I thought this was a great idea, especially since we
were frustrated about being in jail and unable to continue the fight to save
babies. However, the only result we know of was that the Wayside Honor
Camp laundry facility lost its biggest account!
Would Christ have done Operation Wild Flower? I discovered the
answer while reading Matthew 13:24. In this parable Jesus tells the servants
not to pull the weeds from among the wheat. Rather, He said, they should
let both weeds and wheat grow together. Then at harvest time, the weeds
would be destroyed and the wheat harvested.
In Operation Wild Flower we were trying to pull out the weeds. The
message of the parable is that we are to let God deal with those who have
sinned. It’s not our job. 1 pray the Wayside laundry personnel have forgiven
me.
The Pro-Life movement is full of great ideas. Most are far more Biblical
than Operation Wild Flower. However, none has succeeded in eliminating
or even curbing abortion. Despite all the great and worthwhile ministries,
the latest findings from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate
19
national'Baby's Day
that the amount of abortions has only slightly decreased after the initial
soaring ofnumbers following Roe versus Wade.
If these statistics are true, we can rejoice for the lives that have been
saved. But, why only a slight decrease?
Other than establishing crises pregnancy centers (CPCs) and shelters,
the history of the Pro-Life movement as a whole has addressed mainly the
negative side of abortion. We focus on the physical destruction of life, not
the blessings of that life. Further, we’ve done little to change hearts so that
people want to have children and raise them to maturity.
The message that abortion kills has been preached across our land. John
the Baptist, too, had a negative message—repentance. Jesus followed after
The Baptist with a message of forgiveness. We see this clearly in His story of
the Prodigal son. Even today, the Father is waiting with open arms. Let us,
too, extend our arms with forgiveness, openness and celebration of life.

WE'RE ENGAGED
in '.'.'o r
22 WE'RE ENGAGED IN WAR
W
e who oppose abortion have often been accused of lacking
compassion and of failing to provide support for women in
unwanted pregnancies. Others have said, “Pro-Life has helped us to see the
fetus as a baby. But so what? They don’t care!”
What have we offered to counter these charges? Our most visible efforts
have been demonstrations, condemnation, and accusations
ofmurder.
In fact, only about three percent of Christians are actively involved in any
type of Pro-Life ministry. True, not every Christian family can open its
doors to house and care for an unwed mother or to adopt her baby. Nor can
all Christians spend their time serving in CPCs. Other aspects of Christ’s
work must continue as well.
It takes a unique calling from God to block an abortion clinic; to hold
up a sign that reads, “Abortion Kills Babies;” or to become a crisis pregnancy
counselor.
The blessed people who do this ministry are few and are desperately
needed. They can be compared with the trained elite troops of the U.S.
Army known as the Green Berets. Many have risked their lives, or have
walked away from their careers to start Crisis Pregnancy Centers
or homes.
But what about the rest of us Christians? Are the Pro-Choice charges
based on truth? Do we not care about the mothers or their babies?
Can the United States leave the protection of our country to the Green
Beret’s? Can we expect such special units alone to win a war?
Of course not! What is needed is a strong army, united with one clear
goal and objective. It need not be large; confrontational weapons aren’t even
necessary. Think of the Old Testament Gideon whose army caused confusion
among the ranks of the Midianites; and of Joshua and the battle of Jerico
w’here God’s people simply walked around the city.
Yet it takes an army of many divisions to wage a successful war. Men and
women, each trained in basic warfare, then trained to function in their
various capacities.
NATIONAL Paby's Day 23
Everyone first learns the basics of warfare: how to take orders, how to
shoot a rifle. After basics, there is specialized training. This is what makes an
army function. There are those who learn to fire the big cannons. Others
learn how to cook for the troops; tend to the wounded; keep supplies
moving; etc. All are part of the army Each role is essential to making the
army function. By uniting their efforts they can win battles, and win wars.
By focusing on our primary goal and objective—advancing the
kingdom of God—and uniting our efforts for the battle at hand—saving
the lives of the unborn—we can become victorious as we praise God for
babies and the life He has given.
The year was 1937. Jonathan had just graduated from medical school
with a promising career as a doctor, having graduated at the top of his class.
He was invited to join a prestigious hospital and soon became a leader in the
medical community.
In December of 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked and his country was at
war. Jonathan enlisted in the Army Corps and was sent to England. There
he trained as a medic, again ranking among the top ofhis class.
Then came the news that the largest amphibious landing would take
place across the English Channel—D Day. Jonathan’s regiment would land
on Omaha Beach. The trip was smooth for Jonathan’s ship, yet it seemed to
take days. He thought of his years of training. He wondered how long it
would be before he could resume his practice in the safe town where he had
settled. As the ship approached the French coastline Jonathan could hear the
terrible sounds ofgunfire. The reality ofwar engulfed him.
The call came to hit the beach. Jonathan was with the second wave of
soldiers and was ordered to care for anyone who called out “medic” from rhe
first wave of soldiers. As he jumped into the water, Jonathan saw the splash
from bullets strafing the water. It seemed to be everywhere. The noise from
gun fire and bombs was so loud, he thought this must be worse than hell.
In the chaos he heard a faint voice, “Medic.” Jonathan moved toward the
beach. Again he heard, “Medic, MEDIC!”
24 WE'RE ENGAGED IN WAR
He waded though the debris-filled water toward the voice.
Jonathan heard a loud explosion; felt intense pain. Suddenly the guns
were silent. Jonathan was dead!
It all seems so futile. What’s the point of wasting a promising career? Of
sending a Jonathan to the front lines? Should we all stay in the safety of our
homes? Should we disband our military forces? Never! It is because our
military is strong that our borders are safe from hostile forces.
There are many Jonathans in every7 army Each member of the military
has a life he or she could be living. Yet they take their training, learn their
appointedjobs, practice for war.
Ever}7 army expects casualties—except the Christian army Somehow, we
are surprised when one of our soldiers falls and is taken from the battle. Yet,
"precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of bis saints, "
Psalm 116:15, and "blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, "
Revelation 14:13.
One reason the United States and her allies won World War II is because
many Jonathans left their homes, took their training, and were there to
replace those who fell in battle. We too can be victorious through prayer,
obedience and persistance!
NATIONAL’Baby's Day 25
If this is true, why didn’t we win in Viet Nam? In that war the United
States sent 2,700,000 trained troops. We lost 58,000 lives, and over 300,000
were wounded. The emotional and social scars of that war still affect our
entire country.
The difference between these two wars can be seen clearly in the support
our troops received from those at home. During World War II families did
without conveniences such as sugar, gasoline, even shoes, in order to provide for
the war effort. Letters and prayers followed our troops; they knew our country
was united in our effort to conquer our enemies. It was as though every time a
family stayed home instead of burning fuel for a family outing they were
celebrating the victory, every cake not baked, every little brother wearing his big
brother’s outgrown shoes, became a victory cry in support ofour troops.
During the Viet Nam conflict, we were in an internal struggle among
ourselves. Our troops felt abandoned, unappreciated. In effect, our failure to
take a united stand was celebrating our defeat.
As Christians we are engaged in a warfor the souls of men and women.
One of the battles involves the lives of unborn babies and the agonies of
their mothers. And yet, like in the United States during Viet Nam,
Christians are not united in our view on abortion.
Most Christians are opposed to abortion. Yet for many varied reasons
there are Christians who have concluded that a woman should have the
right to determine whether to bring her own baby to birch. The two
opposing views are not as openly discussed among Christians as those
during the Viet Nam conflict, but those differences do hinder our efforts to
win the war.
Do wre not believe in the same living God? Is He not the same yesterday,
today and forever? Do we not believe that God creates life and that He is
working to make all things good for those who love Him? Let us as His
body unite on this premise, and have a glorious celebration of life for the
rest ofthe world to see.
Gods way of waging war is quite different from ours. It can be seen in
Psalm 149 niv, Let the people he glad...let them praise his name with
dancing and make music...for the LORD takes delight in his people. Let
the saints rejoice in this honor and singforjoy. ’The Psalm goes on to say
that as God’s people rejoice together we will defeat our foes.

28 UNITING THE CHURCH
T
he Christian Church is engaged in two battles: the battle for eternal souls,
and the physical battle for life itself Various groups of Christians are
involved in each of these battles. Some churches, and individuals, are actively
seeking those who are apparendy headed for eternal damnation. Their message
clearly proclaims that Jesus came to forgive sinners. They may ask, “Why save
the body ifthe soul is damned for eternity?”
Others extend their efforts to meet the needs of those in physical,
emotional, or financial crises. They may be asking, “How can the soul be
saved ifthere is no physical body?”
The Christian Church is like an army. If we are to win the physical and
spiritual battle we are fighting, we must unite and focus our efforts.
It has been said that the turning point of World War II was the
successful landing at Normandy On that day, all the Allied armies attacked
on one day. Britain did not attack one day and America another. Their
efforts were coordinated with armies that had conquered north Africa and
Italy. In a united effort the Allies made their assault and gained the victory;
In the same way, we Christians—Catholics, Protestants, and Pro-Life
advocates—must join efforts. We can wage war using God’s method, that of
praise and celebration, as one mighty army. Just as the U.S. and her allies
joined forces on D-Day, let us unite our efforts on Baby’s Day—
our B-Day.
As Christians we can present our message in a creative and sensitive way
so that those in need—whether physical, emotional or financial—can sense
God’s love, acceptance, and provision. Then they will be more open to
receive His message ofeternal forgiveness.
We might think of a homeless man in need of a meal. He happens upon
two kitchens. In the first he finds a gourmet cookbook and expensive
ingredients. Nearby is a beautifully set table. He turns the pages of the
cookbook finding tantalizing pictures accompanying complex recipes.
Everything looks absolutely delicious. But there is nothing to satisfy his
immediate need.
In the second kitchen he finds a humble work area. Steam rises from a
pan of oatmeal. A pitcher of cold milk, and a bowl of brown sugar wait
beside an empty bowl and a spoon.
NATIONAL "Baby's Day 29
In which kitchen will the man’s needs be met?
It seems there are churches offering unprepared gourmet food; and there
are others that simply offer a bowl of oatmeal. Most of those we try to reach
with the Gospel message have immediate needs. They don’t need a fancy,
complex message. Their immediate need is to find an expression of a loving,
caring, and forgiving Jesus in the form of willing and available Christians.
The New Testament writer spoke of such needy people. “You need milk,
not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is
not acquainted with the teachings about righteousness. But solid
food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves
to distinguish goodfrom evil, ” Hebrews 5:12-14 Niv.
A woman in an unwanted pregnancy is searching for answers that are
easily understood. She’s looking for an understanding ally who can provide
those answers without condemnation. The thought of bringing a baby into
a world that is already a living hell for her is unthinkable.
If we are to share the Gospel with such mothers-to-be, we must be
creative. We can follow the examples of some church leaders. When the
hippies of the 1960s rejected the mainstream church, some church leaders
took the time to learn what young people were interested in. Then they
offered the Gospel accordingly, in an environment where young people would
be comfortable. One such pastor was Chuck Smith of Costa Mesa, California.
He scheduled concerts where musicians offered the Gospel message in a
musical format that hippies and other young people would enjoy. As a result,
thousands were rescued from eternal damnation and have become strong
Christians, reaching others for Christ.
No matter what the particular strength of an individual church, we can
combine our emphases and unite to celebrate life as God intends it.

32 LINKING FORCES WITH CPCs
O
ften CPC leaders ask for help from churches. Instead, they should be
asking how the CPC can help the church. They could go to local
pastors and say, “We want to help your church by hosting a Thank God for
Babies Celebration. We want to invite to your church all the mothers and
babies we’ve helped through our CPC so they can see for themselves the
love of God in action. We want to bless your congregation and the
community around the church. As missionaries to the unborn we want to
do our part to change the hearts of others toward abortion. We will give
your church our finest donated baby and maternity clothes to be given away
at the celebration.”
Not only would the church and the CPC benefit from this partnership,
those we reach would see us united in love. The CPC would be helping the
church to save the spiritual being of the mother, and the church would be
helping the CPC to save the physical being ofthe unborn.
Crisis Pregnancy Centers are sometimes called missionaries to the
unborn. Yet, they minister mainly to poor women. However, not only poor
women kill their babies. Recent statistics indicate that up to thirty percent
of abortions are for women in the middle and upper income range. A Baby’s
Day celebration can expand a CPC’s mission field. The Pro-Life movement
is often accused of failing to care for the mother and baby if she chooses to
let it live.
Indeed, a Baby’s Day celebration can reach all classes of people, and the
entire family.
33
ENLIFEN
ENLIFEN
34
I
f we are to eliminate abortion, or even to reduce the number of
abortions, the hearts of those inclined to seek abortions must be changed.
Here is the core issue: Why are these babies being conceived in the first
place?
God has a master plan for mankind. It includes fellowship with Him
and healthy relationships with one another. When these two elements are
understood and enjoyed, abortion becomes a non-issue.
When we embrace God’s love and His pattern for sexual fulfillment
within the confines of marriage, there is no need for abortion. We will see
all life as precious, beginning at conception: that life begun by a married
couple; that life within an unmarried teenager; that life produced out of
lustful passion during a rape. God can redeem any situation and turn it for
good. Even an unwanted pregnancy.
When Christians share the Gospel message they set out To Evangelize.
When Christians interweave the Gospel message with the message
of the value of life from conception on, we call it To Enlifen. This is the
message we offer.
Our vehicle we call Baby’s Day—A day when the plans of the initiator
of death are crushed. A day when the Creator of Life is worshiped and
glorified. A day when the Body of Christ is united through the grace and
love ofChrist.
Let’s not wait for the reversal of Roe versus Wade. Let Baby’s Day be a
reminder, now, that Jesus won the eternal victory over sin and death
on the cross at Calvary. Let’s join forces to enlifen our nation.
35
“All tke treasure in the vtorld

THANK GOD FOR BABIES
W
hen we hear of a parent who harms or kills his child, we react in
horror. It goes against God’s design. He created us to love our
children.
When we look into the eyes of our children we feel a sense ofjoy. When
they are happy we feeljoy; when they are gloomy we are sad.
The bond that unites parents with children is miraculous—from God.
Those who have lost both a spouse and a child to death report that the
greater pain is losing their child.
But do we really thank God for babies?
During my time in jail while serving in Operation Rescue I had a vision
of a palace filled with jewels, gold, diamonds, and rich tapestries. I felt as
though I were in Solomon’s palace.
As I started to leave 1 noticed the tapestry was forming parts of what
looked like a head; then diamonds were part of what looked like closed eyes;
jewels were forming ears; and gold was forming a thumb being sucked. I
noticed that all the treasures were forming a delicate
unborn child.
Several weeks passed before I understood what the vision meant: If we
combine all the worldly treasures together, they would not equal the value of
one unborn child!
Jesus told His followers in Luke 12:32-34 to give their possessions to
the poor and to store their treasures in heaven. “For where your treasure
is, there your heart will be also, ” he said.
C.S. Lewis, in his book, The Weight of Glory, states that, “Nations,
cultures, arts, civilizations—these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the
life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry,
snub and exploit...(that become) everlasting splendors.”
A friend told me the following story. “Several years ago my husband and
1 provided a home for an unmarried mother-to-be. Each evening she and I
prayed together. During those months we awaited the birth of her child we
dealt with various issues—anger, forgiveness, her parents’ rejection of her
pregnancy, the future ofherselfand her baby.
NATIONAL 'Baby's Day 37
“Only days before her delivery she decided that adoption was best for
both her and the baby. The decision had been a heart-wrenching process;
difficult for me as well because 1 had determined not to influence her in
either direction.
“Months later she was getting on with her life, settled into a new job
and apartment. On the date of her baby’s first birthday she came to me in
tears during the morning church service. She wept in my arms at the loss of
the child she let go. The love was always there, demonstrated in her case by
her decision to place him in a home with two parents.”
Yes, we do love babies.
My son Jason and 1 were riding our bikes one day and decided to stop
off at a graveyard and read some tombstones. Far away I noticed one grave
almost completely covered with fresh flowers. Someone just died, I
thought.
But we discovered that the tombstone was quite old. In fact, the date of
death was over twenty years ago. I wondered at the abundance of fresh
flowers. Then I noticed the date of birth, only one year prior to the death. I
couldn’t help but think that someone’s love for this one-year-old baby girl
brought them back, perhaps frequently, to put flowers on a twenty-year-old
grave.
I left the cemetery with a sense of sadness; yet filled with hope. We do
thank God for babies. The Lord made us to dearly love our children.
It seems that once a child is born—once we see it or hold it in our
arms—it is usually well loved by its parents. The time of emotional turmoil
is while the baby is in the womb. For many mothers-to-be it is hard to
thank God for the baby in her womb.
A friend told me that many years ago when her mother, who already had
two children under two and a half, learned that she was pregnant again, she
didn’t want another baby. Birth control was just coming into popular use.
Having stair-step children was no longer considered acceptable. And besides,
the other two were both still in diapers and on the bottle.
38 THANK GOD FOR BABIES
Abortion was still illegal then, but that wasn’t the issue. The woman was
a Christian. She chose to accept the life within her. So the baby wasn’t
destroyed. By the time my friend was bom her mother loved her as much as
she loved her other children. Both parents rejoiced over the birth. “I have
never experienced a lack of Mom’s love,” she assured me. She went on to
add, “I see her willingness to endure once again the birth process, to die to
her own preferences, to her own comfort and convenience, and to pour love
into yet another young life as a process that symbolizes life itself, and a
supreme example of love.” Indeed, in many ways all of pregnancy and
motherhood is a denial of one’s self.
While pregnant a woman will be in touch with all three of life’s
dimensions: the physical, emotional, and spiritual. Almost immediately her
hormones will begin to change causing emotional pain. During the early
months she will usually face morning sickness. When she is in labor she
must die to her physical and emotional self. Of the three dimensions of life,
for most women only the spiritual will not be directly impacted. Yet her
spiritual strength is able to lift her above the emotional and physical pains
during childbirth. Afterwards when she holds her child in her arms she will
realize what a blessing God has given her.
Because of sin, life comes through the pain of childbirth, which can only
be overcome through Jesus Christ (Genesis 3:16). A mother’s suffering
during pregnancy and childbirth, in order to bring forth physical life for her
child, can be compared to Jesus’ suffering to bring forth eternal life for
others. Women experience morning sickness; Jesus was sick to the point of
sweating blood (Luke 22:44). Women lose their figures and feel fat; Jesus
was beaten and disfigured (Matthew 27:28-31). Women suffer with aches
and pain from the extra weight they gain; Jesus ached as He carried the
weight of the cross (John 19:17). Pregnancy produces stretch marks on the
mother’s body; Jesus was left with nail prints in His hands and feet (John
20:24-27). During the birth process, blood and water flows from the
mother; from Jesus’ side flowed blood and water (John 19:34).
Jesus suffered greatly to give us forgiveness and eternal life. In the
Garden of Gethsemane He could have refused to go to the cross. Instead,
Jesus chose to give up His life to bring forth everlasting life for others. Why?
According to Hebrews 12:2, it was “for the joy set before him [that He]
endured the cross. ” Note the word endured. Jesus said, “A woman
giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but
39
national'Baby's Day
when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy
that a child is born into the world, 'John 6:21 Niv.
We love the babies God has given us. Let us celebrate and thank Him
together!

42 GENERAL GUIDELINES
Guidelines For Baby's Day Celebration
Date: The now official Date for Baby’s Day (Babies Day) is June 24th and
celebrated on that day or the following Saturday.
We ask that all churches fulfill five elements during this national
missionary outreach:
• Present the Gospel message
• Allow for open baby dedications
• /Ml games and items be offered free except food
• .Alcoholic beverages not permitted
• Promoting any business, other than 501C3 non-profit ministries, not
permitted
Note: Baby’s Day should not be used as a fund raiser. Instead it should be a
missionary’ outreach to the community’ to change hearts.
General Guidelines
I. Overview
We see three phases or plans for hosting a “Thank God For Babies
Celebration” on Baby’s Day. The three plans will be discussed in detail
on pages 54-55. We suggest the churches start with Phase or Plan I, move on
to Plan II the following year, and continue on with Plan III in
subsequent years. Whichever plan is chosen, we suggest that all
celebrations be a union of a Christian Church and either a Crisis
Pregnancy’ Center or Crisis Pregnancy Shelter. The guidelines listed in
this chapter can be used for all three plans.
In order to get volunteers to launch a new outreach and to initiate this
type of ministry, strong pastoral leadership is a must. The pastor will
personally assign a committee to host the event. Announcements should
national'Baby's Day 43
be made far in advance, and reminders given periodically in church
bulletins and from the pulpit.
II. Churches
A. Church General—Five months prior to the event a planning committee
needs to be formed. Two weeks prior to the celebration the church is
requested to have an invitation flyer (see page 68) inserted into the service
bulletin or missalet. The invitation will allow all pregnant mothers or mothers
with small children to receive free used baby clothes at the church-sponsored
baby celebration . The congregation will be asked to give this card to any
mothers they know.
B. Small Churches—are encouraged to unite with other churches within
their denomination or with other churches with common interests. They
can establish a yearly consortium to host the event. Each church could
host one ofthe activities mentioned in Plan I later in this chapter. A church
could host a different activity each year or create a new one that uplifts
mothers and their children. A different church could host the main event each
year; they would carry the overall responsibility and be more likely to receive
the blessings ofnew believers joining their congregation . The pastor ofthe
church hosting the event would be responsible for the baby dedication and
sharing the Good News.
C. Large Churches—are well suited to host the event by designating one of
their active ministries or home fellowships to coordinate the outreach.
III. Praise Songs and Baby Dedications—
As parents hold their children, the host pastor will lead in a song of
praise to God for the gift of life and the particular gift of babies.
Suggested songs:
The Doxology: Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow
Faith Of Our Fathers
O Worship The King
Holy, Holy, Holy
Praise Him, Praise Him
God Of Our Fathers
Great Is Thy Faithfulness
44 GENERAL GUIDELINES
Each pastor or group of pastors will decide how a baby dedication
should be done. However, we suggest that if less than three babies are
to be dedicated, they be done individually. If more than three, they
can be dedicated as a group . Baby dedication certificates (see page 72)
could be prepared and distributed after the dedication.
IV. CPC's or Shelters
A. Asking the Church—Pastors often are asked by para-church ministries
for financial help. Baby’s Day is an excellent opportunity for the CPC or
Shelter to help the church grow. The CPC director could approach the
pastor to offer the church and the surrounding community free used
baby clothes. The CPC and/or Shelter could also host some of the games
or events. We see this as an excellent way of building a solid relationship
with the church.
B. Inviting Mothers—An invitation can be sent to all the mothers the
CPC has helped. This will help them understand mothers are cared for
after the baby is bom, as well as while they are pregnant.
C. CPC Booth—A booth with printed materials and counselors can be
placed adjacent to the line for free baby clothes. Or several booths can be
set up, with each one showing a stage of development of the growing
child. As the mothers enter the baby celebration they will be able to see
the child develop and be able to ask questions.
Information and equipment needed for the booth:
1. Information on fatherhood and the importance of raising children
the Biblical way.
2. If available, display either models or pictures of the developing
child in the womb.
3. Information on post-abortion counseling and a counselor available
to help mothers in need.
4. Space in the booth for larger donations like cribs, car seats, etc. to
give away to mothers based on their needs.
V. Games and activities
The volunteers for games should be scheduled for two shifts:
10:00am—Noon, and Noon—2:00pm. (See Event Coordinator Sheet on
page 59.) Volunteers may be rotated among the Games and Activities if
desired.
national'Babg's Day 45
To prevent loss, materials for Games and Activities should be checked
out by the Event Coordinator. (See Check-out list on page 59.)
A. Games—The games listed on pages 78-85 were all created to have interaction
between the parent and child to promote the family. We believe inexpensive
games with lots ofcreativity can be even more fun
than a ride at Disneyland. Please send any new game ideas to
TenderHearts Family Ministries.
B. Clowns and Face Painting—Small children love to have their faces
painted, especially if a clown does it. Someone can dress like a clown and
use removable face painting makeup. Clown costumes can be rented and
the makeup can be purchased at any large party supplies store.
C. Balloons and Decorations—Balloons can be used to decorate the
tables. If a stage will be used for a band or for the baby dedications, we
recommend attaching the balloons to strings and making a rainbow
above the stage. You can rent a helium tank from most party supply
stores or blow up the balloons yourself. Or you can ask at a car
dealership for the contact person who prepares balloons for their parking
lot when they have sales.
VI. Baby Clothes Giveaway/Exchange
A. Description—We suggest all baby celebrations include a baby clothes
giveaway for children up to age seven. Pregnant mothers and mothers
with small children will receive free baby clothes (limit per mother is
suggested). The reason for the baby clothes giveaway is to help make
motherhood a little easier and to share the message by giving them a
card that says “God bless you for choosing life.” We
see this as a great evangelistic way to show the surrounding community
that Jesus is alive and cares for mothers and their precious children bom
and unborn.
B. Donated Clothes and Toys—The pastor can announce that baby
clothes are to be donated for Baby’s Day for three months prior to the
event. Announcements can point out that this is one way church
families can help save the unborn. A sample hand out sheet describing
what items are needed for the exchange is shown on page 67. Larger donated
items, such as cribs, changing tables, car seats, etc., should be given for later
distribution, to the participating CPC at the celebration. All left over clothing
and accessories could be given to the participating CPC.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
C. Equipment Needed—Depending on the size of the church, these are
examples of the kind of equipment needed to host Baby’s Day
celebration.
• Four clothing racks.
• Sixteen tables. Fourteen for the clothes and two for checking out the
clothes.
• Twenty posters that will be affixed to the tables and racks stating size
of the clothing.
• Barricading streamers to partition offbaby clothes exchange area.
• Over three hundred bags. Bags may be donated by a local
grocery store.
• PA system to announce the card numbers or a dry erasable board
mounted high.
D. Procedures—How to host a giveaway:
• Each mother is given a card that says “God Bless You For Choosing
Life” (see page 70). The cards are numbered in order. A small group is
invited, according to the numbers listed on the cards. They are then invited
into the area where the clothes are given away , perhaps ten at a time,
depending on the space allowed. After the allocated five minutes, call for
the next group. The amount ofmothers and time should be varied with how
many mothers are waiting for clothes. A Praise Band or M.C. should call
out the numbers being served at regular intervals . If a PA system is not
available , we suggest a chalk board to list the numbers . This will free
parents to wander around instead of standing in line.
• All clothes donated will be sorted by size and gender and laid out on
the tables and racks accordingly.
• A limit can be set on the number of clothes and accessories given to
each mother, perhaps five. However, this needs to be determined by
your committee and determined by the number of clothes you
collect.
E. Personnel—To reduce confusion there should be a minimum of ten
volunteers stationed at the clothing exchange.
• Two per check-out table making a total of four.
• Four to assist the visitors in locating clothes and accessories.
• One to periodically inform the band as to the numbers to be called out.
• One to hand out the numbered cards.
NATIONAL'Baby's Day
VII. Toy Distribution
The celebrations following Plan II or III will need toys as prizes for
participating in the games.
• Baby Fun Card—At the entrance to the event mothers will receive a
Baby Fun Card that lists each game (see page 66). Each time a child
participates in a game, the card is stamped where the name ofthe game is
listed. Ifthe child wins an event, his card can be stamped twice on the name
of the game. Rubber stamps can be purchased through most Christian
book stores.
• Toy Display—All donated toys should be displayed in one comer of
the celebration. We suggest two ladders connected by planks of wood
or shelves on the steps. Each shelf should be labeled with a number,
each number representing the amount of stamps on the Baby Fun
Card. The higher the number the more valuable the prize. A mother
familiar with the value of the toys can be assigned to this
responsibility.
• Toy Pick-up—When the family is ready to leave, they can go to the
toy display area to pick up their toys based on the number of stamps
on the Baby Fun Card.
VIII. Coordinators
There should be seven coordinators to initiate Plan III (see page 59 for
coordinator sheet). Plans I and II do not require all these positions
because one person could be assigned to several tasks.
• Advertising & Public Relations • Activities, games and events
• Counseling and information on • Clothing distribution
God’s intent for the family
(includes Gospel message)
Treasurer
• Music and entertainment
• Food stand
48 - GENERAL GUIDELINES
IX. Volunteer Sources
A. Mother's of Pre-Schoolers (MOPS)—MOPS groups should be
recruited by the church to hand out flyers to pregnant mothers and
friends in advance and to help coordinate some of the activities.
B. Boy and Girl Scout Troops—Badges can be awarded to volunteers who
participate. Awards can also be given to those who provide the best game
or activity that promotes family and life.
C. Home Bible Study Groups—Pastors can request that each Bible study
group help with one of the activities.
D. Marriage Encounter—Churches that sponsor Marriage Encounter
could enlist participants to help with activities, invite families to the
event, and to host booths at the celebration.
E. American Association of Retired People—Senior citizen groups can
be contacted to help.
X. Baby's Day Petition to Congressmen
At the entrance to the celebration a petition sheet can be made available
where children can have their hands stamped and the parents can sign
the child’s name and address. When enough petition sheets have been
received by TenderHearts Family Ministries they will be sent to
Congressmen, Supreme Court judges, and the President to request an
official Baby’s Day.
XI. Advertising and Promotion
A. Advertising—This is probably the most critical aspect of the
celebration. The best responses have been from ads in local Parenting
Magazines, Pennysaver and Recycler, in that order. Advertisements do
not need to be large. For instance, in the Pennysaver we placed only two
advertisements: one in the events column, the other in the children’s
clothes section. The advertisement simply said “Free Baby Clothes and
Lots ofFun! Thank God For Babies Celebration this June 24th. Please Call...
Church at...”. The Parenting advertisement (or any magazine or newspaper
advertisement) should have a bold border and emphasize “Free Baby Clothes
99
B. Press Releases—A press release should be as positive as possible. You’ll
find a generic press release before and after the event following this
paragraph . Also, on page 53 is a list of some talking points to keep in mind
during interviews with the press.

BABY'S DAY EVENT CELEBRATES LIFE
YOUR CITY, YOUR STATE — June 24thy------- Baby strollers and
pregnant women dominated the crowds at a celebration of life at
Central Community Church yes-terday. Pastor Kevin Williams said, “I've
never seen so many pregnant women in one place. It was quite a sight."
According to Sharon Brown, director of Bethany Crisis Pregnancy
Center and co-sponsor of the Baby's Day Celebration, those who
oppose abortion are often accused of not caring for the women or the
babies they choose not to abort. “This is our way of offering further
support. We gave clothing to every pregnant woman and to each child
under the age of seven. The clothes were contributed by Pro-Life
supporters who want to help women who have chosen life for their
unborn babies."
One young woman, Debbie Carver, pushed a stroller carrying a
newborn while keeping an eye on her two-year-old son. “Everywhere I
looked I saw either pregnant women or parents with small children.
When I'm home with my kids I tend to feel I’m the only one. It was
quite encouraging to realize there are many others who have chosen to
give life to their kids—to make them a priority."
The party atmosphere was contagious as one strolled through the
church grounds. There were booths where dads can get information on
fathering. A slalom with a stroller race, apple sauce eating contests, diaper
changing races and baby weight lifting contests.
50 GENERAL GUIDELINES
A table filled with literature drew the curious and confused. Some
brochures included pictures of dismembered aborted babies. But the
majority of the material was up-beat and informative, offering alternate
options such as adoption, shelters for unmarried mothers-to-be, and
counseling centers for their families as well as the often forgotten
fathers of the babies.
Jason Gonzales, who recently learned his girlfriend is expecting
twins said he had thought maybe the babies should be aborted. “This
today has convinced me that life is precious." Almost as a declaration of
determination he added, “I'm going to marry her and become a
responsible dad."
Although older children and teenagers comprised only a small
percentage of those attending, they were enthusiastic participants.
While her sister, Elizabeth helped mothers find clothes that fit their
children, sixteen-year-old Katie Peterson helped run a booth where
toddlers competed in an apple sauce eating contest. “I love kids," said
Katie. "I want to have at least six when I'm married. In fact, I plan to
become a midwife. But for now, I want to encourage young mothers to
love the babies they're carrying."
After two decades of condemnation and protests, Pro-Life
supporters found a positive way to demonstrate. “We want to do this
every year," said Pastor Williams. "We feel it's a way we can both help
families and communicate the value of life."
AGENCIES OFFERING ASSISTANCE TO PREGNANT WOMEN
A Sidebar to accompany Baby's Day Story. When an unmarried woman
learns she's pregnant she needs acceptance, emotional support,
encouragement, and someone to help her explore her options. Here are a

COMMUNITY INVITED TO CELEBRATE LIFE AT BABY’S DAY
NEWS—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
YOUR CITY, YOUR STATE — June 24th — For over twenty years the
focus of those who oppose abortion has been on aborted babies and protests.
Many of those opposed to abortion have concluded that the Pro-Life issue is
just too controversial, and have stayed on the sidelines.
According to Pastor Kevin Williams of First Community Church, a
Baby's Day Celebration taking place this Saturday, January -, was
planned to offer an alternative way for Pro-Life advocates to express their
support for both unmarried mothers-to-be, and families with young
children. "We want to turn the focus on the living," says Pastor
Williams. "Our goal is to offer practical help and emotional support to
those who choose life instead of abortion."
52 GENERAL GUIDELINES
First Community Church members, and the staff and supporters of
the CPC will combine efforts to host the day's activities. Located on the
church grounds, Baby's Day has something to offer the entire family.
Pastor Williams says, “When we embrace God's love and His pattern
for sexual fulfillment within the confines of marriage, there is no need
for abortion. We will see all life as precious, beginning at conception:
that life begun by a married couple; that life within an unmarried
teenager; that life produced out of lustful passion during a rape. God
can redeem any situation, and turn it for good." He added, "even an
unwanted pregnancy."
Moms racing empty strollers, dads..., and babies trying to eat the
most apple sauce are only a few of the games planned. At booths
staffed by people of all ages, older children will be playing frisbee catch,
basketball, weight lifting, and potato sack races.
Church families and Bethany's staff and friends have been collecting
like-new clothing for infants through age seven to distribute to those
attending Baby’s Day. "We want to show in a tangible way that we
care about babies and their parents," said Sharon Brown, director of
Bethany. If others in the community would like to contribute, they can
call the church office.
"We offer not only counseling to help the pregnant woman plan for
the future, but help for all involved—the baby's father, and both
families," she added.
Baby's Day was started in 1994 in Orange County, California, by
Simon Cassar, with the goal to celebrate life. Cassar says, "We want to
turn the Pro-Life focus away from death and the destruction of life.
Many churches across the nation are uniting efforts for a once-a-year
NATIONAL'Baby's Day 53
celebration of life. Baby's Day shows that we can unite the church on
this most controversial issue."
The Baby's Day Celebration begins at 11:00 a.m. at the First
Community Church, 123 E. Center Street, Anytown. For additional
information call: 222-3333.
QUESTIONS REGARDING BABY'S DAY
1. What is the reason and purpose for this event?
• Men need to show their support towards mothers and take
responsibility to be thefather that God wants us to be. To
show the community that babies are truly a blessingfrom
Almighty God.
• To help the church promote itspro-life beliefs in apositive
evangelical way.
• To show mothers andfathers the love ofJesus and to say
“God bless youfor choosing life! ”
• We have a Mother's Day and a Father's Day, why not an
official Baby's Day!
2. Don’t you think that by putting on this event that you will be promoting
teenage pregnancies which are already at an epidemic level?
fke have set up a booth to address this very issue. Yes, babies are a blessing,
but theirfill blessing is only expressed when they are in a loving caring
family environment. However, no /natter who the mother is, ifshe is a
teenager, or a /mother in her lateryears oflife, we still believe a live baby is a
greater blessing, than an aborted, dead baby!
3. What type of information is in the booth to help prevent teenage
pregnancies?
Counselors are available to discuss issues on Christian morality, abstinence,
marriageplanning, post-abortion depression, and the importance ofafather
in a child's life.

For over twenty years we’ve been hearing of aborted babies,
protests, and jail terms. Many among us who are opposed to
abortion have concluded that Pro-Life is just too controversial,
and have stayed on the sidelines. Many ofus would like to keep
the issue of abortion at a distance. Instead, let s not only focus on
death and negatives, let us joyfully celebrate life. By doing so,
we may see people become more open to being involved
in the Pro-Life cause.
LET’S CELEBRATE LIFE!
Baby’s Day shows how we can unite the church on this most
controversial issue. By becoming sensitive and creative, we can
unite for a once-a-year celebration of life; we can make it a special
day across our nation. We have a Mother’s Day
and a Father’s Day, why not a Baby’s Day?
Learn why and how we can accomplish this exciting mission.
Jesus said it clearly: “Whoever welcomes this little child in
my name welcomes me...for he who is least among you
all...he is the greatest, 'and “the thiefcomes only to steal
and kill and destroy; I bare come that they might have
life and have it to the full. ” Luke 9:48 and John 10:10 NIV

  • 8. 1 Ani-etican Lite League, Inc. The Culture of Death works havoc in the hearts and minds of so many today, spreading the evil message that one can exercise a choice to kill a child as a “right” rather than the evil that is in the eyes of God. We do not choose, however, to curse this darkness but rather prefer to light a candle, spreading the Good News that Christ loves us; that His children are precious in His sight; and that no matter what has gone before, He is merciful to those who seek Him with a sincere heart. Such is this message—the celebration, the joy of taking part in a campaign to celebrate children: National Baby’s Day. The entire Christian Community owes a debt of gratitude to those who put together this project which, at its core, celebrates the gift of life, restores the culture and heals the brokenness of those who have not seen Christ in the faces oftheir brothers and sisters. This project gives each of us the opportunity to be a blessing to someone in need. 1 challenge you to make this project a working part of the programs in your church and your community today! Mrs. Judie Brown, President American Life League, Inc.
  • 9. “Blessed are the children for theirs is the Kingdom of God” Matthew 19:14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom ofheaven.” I wonder how God feels about babies, yes even with babies everywhere? I can just see God sitting in Heaven looking out over trillions ofmiles ofbeautiful beaches, mountains lakes to His left and trillions ofmiles ofoceans and tropical islands to His right. Then He looks at His watch, Watch! Oh yes, I wonder ifGod keeps time and has a watch? His watch could be the birth and death of a brilliant star which He counts as one day. Each new day He could choose another brilliant star in a far away galaxy. Then I wonder ifHe looks down at this little planet where humans are complaining it’s too populated, we can’t have any more children, it’s too crowded. I wonder what God must think. Does He wonder, “They have only a small amount oftime on earth when compared to all of eternity? They’re only going to be there forjust a little while, can’t they wait ‘only a millionth ofa second! ’ Especially since for the rest of all eternity they will be here with me in Paradise.” I wonder ifGod thinks, “besides I made human beings so I could have a loving relationship with them who repents and accepts me as Lord.” Jesus said in John 14:2 "In my Fathers house are many rooms" Praise God Did we also feel it was too crowded in our mother’s womb? I can imagine the baby thinking, “Gee, there is not enough room in here to move around.” Yet it was in our mother’s womb that we were the closest we have ever been or will ever be to our beloved mother that God gave us. There is a time when we must leave our mother’s womb, but do we not always want and desire to be held in our mother’s arms and feel the warmth ofher love? I also wonder ifGod wanted us to experience living in close quarters to each other so that we can also share an unconditional love for each other and experience the closeness of other humans who are made in the image and likeness ofGod our Father. I believe ifthere ever is a time when the earth cannot sustain and accommodate people, then that will be the time Christ returns for His bride.
  • 10. I’m sure when we see God face to face He will reveal the truth, but as we pray and experience life here on Earth, let us be thankful and celebrate life with joyful thanksgiving, for God loves Life. “I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly” John 10: 10 In 1997 I was once giving a talk about Baby’s Day at a men’s fellowship in a well to do church. The pastor asked me what the talk was about and I told him it was about asking men to help launch a Baby’s Day. He looked at me in astonishment and said, “You have got to be joking!” and then sternly asked who invited me to speak. Someone yelled out, “Howard.” Someone else yelled out, “Hey, Howard isn’t even here.” At this point I was at one ofmy lowest points in my life. I finally started the talk, sharing about how people always feel they cannot afford children, and ifthey have them, cannot afford more ofthem. At the time I did not realize that the congregation ofthis church were all very wealthy with many owing corporations and businesses like Howard who invited me. During my talk I used an example ofwhat I thought would be considered an extremely rich couple; I said they could never have more than one child at this point in their lives because they were only making $60,000 a year. Note the year was 1997. I was hoping to get some chuckles from the audience. Instead they all looked quite complacent with the thought, “Yes, how could someone afford more than one child with only a $60,000 annual income?” Interestingly enough, at the time our family was making around $27,000 and we had four children; none ofthem were deprived of shelter, food, education and most importantly love. I later contemplated my experience with these well-to-do men. Many ofthem had their own businesses like Howard who invited me (who owned one ofthe largest plastic molding companies in California). Ifyou asked any ofthose men ifthey would like to increase the size oftheir business, they would all say, “Ofcourse, who wouldn’t?” Then why would you not want to increase the size ofyour family? I am sure you will hear them say liability, cost overruns; yet the joy and satisfaction ofseeing your children grow, learn, love and accomplish achievements in life is better than any successful new product or expansion ofone’s business. In closing “Baby’s Day” is a men’s spirit-led movement to support mothers, to be started/birthed in the most impoverished inner-city regions: Christian men showing the community what true fatherhood and the responsibilities that unbreakable marriage bonds are all about. A movement that promotes abstinence until marriage, and the greatjoys of fatherhood which starts at the conception oflife. I am now older and have seen so many blessings and concluded all earthly blessings will one day turn to sorrows, the greater the earthly blessing the greater the sorrow, however, those who have faith in Jesus Christ will have blessings eternally. Children are a blessing and with Christ an eternal blessing.

  • 13. 12 A GLORIOUS CELEBRATION D id it really happen? Is it true? Did they really say on the news that the Supreme Court has just overturned Roe versus Wade? Are abortions illegal again? Surely I imagined it. Quietly I try to reconstruct the events. 1 ponder whether it was the news broadcast I watched just before falling asleep. Are churches across the nation declaring this day as Baby’s Day? Are crises pregnancy centers and churches joining together across the nation to thank God for babies and to celebrate life? Are games, toys and baby clothes really being given away free? It has to be true; it was so real. I wonder what people—those neutral on the abortion issue—will think as they see the coverage of thousands of babies being loved and enjoyed by their parents. Babies, the opposition has claimed, are only a burden or simply a choice. I also wonder what the Pro-Choice forces will do with this devastating defeat. Will millions march to Washington, screaming in rage over the Supreme Court’s decision? Sad to say, I finally realized it was only a dream. But what a beautiful dream! It was a dream of a day when the silent screams of unborn children were hushed, and in their place rang the laughter ofbabies, across the land like church bells. A day to celebrate life prompted by the reversal ofRoe versus Wade. But why should we wait until then? Instead, let’s join together now and declare the victory won! As we celebrate the victory of life, mothers who are lost or confused will come to seek answers only found in Jesus Christ. He is the One who created life. He can make our burdens easy, even in a crisis pregnancy. Baby’s Day is a means for all of us—the Christian church, pregnancy crisis centers, Pro-Life advocates, and the general public—to get involved in a positive way in the Pro-Life issue. We are calling for churches and Pro-Life organizations to unite now to celebrate babies as a blessing from God. It will be an outreach to each community, with pastors sharing the Gospel during an open-to-everyone
  • 14. 13 national Baby’s Day baby dedication. People will learn of the love of God and His plan for the family. Over the course of time, our society will change from its negative view of babies to a positive one. Let those babies who are born become our advocates for life. If Christ were physically on earth today, He would address the abortion issue by lovingly holding babies, and saying as He did in Luke 9:48, “whoever receives these little ones, receives me. ” Those newborns, created in the image ofGod, can help to save the unborn. Let the Pro-Choice folks focus on death; we will focus on life!
  • 15.
  • 17. OUR NATION'S CHANGING MORALS 16 D uring the 1950s and 60s, abortion was viewed by most people (especially Christians) as morally wrong. Through the years more and more people have changed their opinion. We are like sheep following our leaders; if they say abortion is okay, they must be right. The action of legalizing abortion preceded the belief that abortion is the right and responsible thing to do. We have allowed ungodly forces to change our country’s actions, and her morals. First we sanctioned the action of abortion, then we began to subsidize the cost of abortion. As a people, we’ve changed our beliefs to justify the actions our country has taken. Even many Christians have adopted the viewpoint that a woman has a right to end the life within her if she has valid reasons. In order for the morals of our nation to be restored and be brought into line with the Word of God, we must take the steps necessary to please the Father. Let’s begin by making babies a cause for celebration. Then, as others join the celebration, or learn of it, their eyes will be opened: we cannot at the same time kill a baby and celebrate its life. Such is the mission of Baby’s Day: a call for all people to celebrate together—not just Christians and Pro-Life advocates—everyone. They will join with their children in games, rejoice with them as they play. They will realize that children really are wonderful. They will hear that God values these babies and that He gave His Son’s life to save them. Their understanding will be enlightened: to kill a baby is very wrong. Nothing can everjustify that. Gradually the people’s morals will change.
  • 18. HAVE WE ] lo Tailed?
  • 19. 18 HAVE WE FAILED? W hile I was actively involved with Operation Rescue, a group that organizes demonstrations outside abortion clinics, I was jailed at the Wayside Honor Camp for blocking an abortion clinic in Los Angeles. I was assigned to fold clothing at their laundry facility, one of the largest in the country. Our biggest account was to clean clothing from local hospitals, including surgical gowns for doctors and nurses. I came up with what 1 thought was an inspiration from God: we would fill the doctors’ uniforms with Pro-Life literature with statements such as, “Doctors kill babies,” and “Doctors know the truth about abortions. Why are you performing them?” We hoped doctors would read these notes and realize abortionists were making all doctors look like murderers. We expected that they would then seek out and humiliate the doctors who performed abortions. I justified this by calling it Operation Wild Flower. I figured that both flowers and weeds are called plants; both abortionists and surgeons are called doctors. Our mission, I said, was to separate the weeds from the flowers who are caring and loving professionals. My partners and I thought this was a great idea, especially since we were frustrated about being in jail and unable to continue the fight to save babies. However, the only result we know of was that the Wayside Honor Camp laundry facility lost its biggest account! Would Christ have done Operation Wild Flower? I discovered the answer while reading Matthew 13:24. In this parable Jesus tells the servants not to pull the weeds from among the wheat. Rather, He said, they should let both weeds and wheat grow together. Then at harvest time, the weeds would be destroyed and the wheat harvested. In Operation Wild Flower we were trying to pull out the weeds. The message of the parable is that we are to let God deal with those who have sinned. It’s not our job. 1 pray the Wayside laundry personnel have forgiven me. The Pro-Life movement is full of great ideas. Most are far more Biblical than Operation Wild Flower. However, none has succeeded in eliminating or even curbing abortion. Despite all the great and worthwhile ministries, the latest findings from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate
  • 20. 19 national'Baby's Day that the amount of abortions has only slightly decreased after the initial soaring ofnumbers following Roe versus Wade. If these statistics are true, we can rejoice for the lives that have been saved. But, why only a slight decrease? Other than establishing crises pregnancy centers (CPCs) and shelters, the history of the Pro-Life movement as a whole has addressed mainly the negative side of abortion. We focus on the physical destruction of life, not the blessings of that life. Further, we’ve done little to change hearts so that people want to have children and raise them to maturity. The message that abortion kills has been preached across our land. John the Baptist, too, had a negative message—repentance. Jesus followed after The Baptist with a message of forgiveness. We see this clearly in His story of the Prodigal son. Even today, the Father is waiting with open arms. Let us, too, extend our arms with forgiveness, openness and celebration of life.
  • 21.
  • 23. 22 WE'RE ENGAGED IN WAR W e who oppose abortion have often been accused of lacking compassion and of failing to provide support for women in unwanted pregnancies. Others have said, “Pro-Life has helped us to see the fetus as a baby. But so what? They don’t care!” What have we offered to counter these charges? Our most visible efforts have been demonstrations, condemnation, and accusations ofmurder. In fact, only about three percent of Christians are actively involved in any type of Pro-Life ministry. True, not every Christian family can open its doors to house and care for an unwed mother or to adopt her baby. Nor can all Christians spend their time serving in CPCs. Other aspects of Christ’s work must continue as well. It takes a unique calling from God to block an abortion clinic; to hold up a sign that reads, “Abortion Kills Babies;” or to become a crisis pregnancy counselor. The blessed people who do this ministry are few and are desperately needed. They can be compared with the trained elite troops of the U.S. Army known as the Green Berets. Many have risked their lives, or have walked away from their careers to start Crisis Pregnancy Centers or homes. But what about the rest of us Christians? Are the Pro-Choice charges based on truth? Do we not care about the mothers or their babies? Can the United States leave the protection of our country to the Green Beret’s? Can we expect such special units alone to win a war? Of course not! What is needed is a strong army, united with one clear goal and objective. It need not be large; confrontational weapons aren’t even necessary. Think of the Old Testament Gideon whose army caused confusion among the ranks of the Midianites; and of Joshua and the battle of Jerico w’here God’s people simply walked around the city. Yet it takes an army of many divisions to wage a successful war. Men and women, each trained in basic warfare, then trained to function in their various capacities.
  • 24. NATIONAL Paby's Day 23 Everyone first learns the basics of warfare: how to take orders, how to shoot a rifle. After basics, there is specialized training. This is what makes an army function. There are those who learn to fire the big cannons. Others learn how to cook for the troops; tend to the wounded; keep supplies moving; etc. All are part of the army Each role is essential to making the army function. By uniting their efforts they can win battles, and win wars. By focusing on our primary goal and objective—advancing the kingdom of God—and uniting our efforts for the battle at hand—saving the lives of the unborn—we can become victorious as we praise God for babies and the life He has given. The year was 1937. Jonathan had just graduated from medical school with a promising career as a doctor, having graduated at the top of his class. He was invited to join a prestigious hospital and soon became a leader in the medical community. In December of 1941, Pearl Harbor was attacked and his country was at war. Jonathan enlisted in the Army Corps and was sent to England. There he trained as a medic, again ranking among the top ofhis class. Then came the news that the largest amphibious landing would take place across the English Channel—D Day. Jonathan’s regiment would land on Omaha Beach. The trip was smooth for Jonathan’s ship, yet it seemed to take days. He thought of his years of training. He wondered how long it would be before he could resume his practice in the safe town where he had settled. As the ship approached the French coastline Jonathan could hear the terrible sounds ofgunfire. The reality ofwar engulfed him. The call came to hit the beach. Jonathan was with the second wave of soldiers and was ordered to care for anyone who called out “medic” from rhe first wave of soldiers. As he jumped into the water, Jonathan saw the splash from bullets strafing the water. It seemed to be everywhere. The noise from gun fire and bombs was so loud, he thought this must be worse than hell. In the chaos he heard a faint voice, “Medic.” Jonathan moved toward the beach. Again he heard, “Medic, MEDIC!”
  • 25. 24 WE'RE ENGAGED IN WAR He waded though the debris-filled water toward the voice. Jonathan heard a loud explosion; felt intense pain. Suddenly the guns were silent. Jonathan was dead! It all seems so futile. What’s the point of wasting a promising career? Of sending a Jonathan to the front lines? Should we all stay in the safety of our homes? Should we disband our military forces? Never! It is because our military is strong that our borders are safe from hostile forces. There are many Jonathans in every7 army Each member of the military has a life he or she could be living. Yet they take their training, learn their appointedjobs, practice for war. Ever}7 army expects casualties—except the Christian army Somehow, we are surprised when one of our soldiers falls and is taken from the battle. Yet, "precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of bis saints, " Psalm 116:15, and "blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, " Revelation 14:13. One reason the United States and her allies won World War II is because many Jonathans left their homes, took their training, and were there to replace those who fell in battle. We too can be victorious through prayer, obedience and persistance!
  • 26. NATIONAL’Baby's Day 25 If this is true, why didn’t we win in Viet Nam? In that war the United States sent 2,700,000 trained troops. We lost 58,000 lives, and over 300,000 were wounded. The emotional and social scars of that war still affect our entire country. The difference between these two wars can be seen clearly in the support our troops received from those at home. During World War II families did without conveniences such as sugar, gasoline, even shoes, in order to provide for the war effort. Letters and prayers followed our troops; they knew our country was united in our effort to conquer our enemies. It was as though every time a family stayed home instead of burning fuel for a family outing they were celebrating the victory, every cake not baked, every little brother wearing his big brother’s outgrown shoes, became a victory cry in support ofour troops. During the Viet Nam conflict, we were in an internal struggle among ourselves. Our troops felt abandoned, unappreciated. In effect, our failure to take a united stand was celebrating our defeat. As Christians we are engaged in a warfor the souls of men and women. One of the battles involves the lives of unborn babies and the agonies of their mothers. And yet, like in the United States during Viet Nam, Christians are not united in our view on abortion. Most Christians are opposed to abortion. Yet for many varied reasons there are Christians who have concluded that a woman should have the right to determine whether to bring her own baby to birch. The two opposing views are not as openly discussed among Christians as those during the Viet Nam conflict, but those differences do hinder our efforts to win the war. Do wre not believe in the same living God? Is He not the same yesterday, today and forever? Do we not believe that God creates life and that He is working to make all things good for those who love Him? Let us as His body unite on this premise, and have a glorious celebration of life for the rest ofthe world to see. Gods way of waging war is quite different from ours. It can be seen in Psalm 149 niv, Let the people he glad...let them praise his name with dancing and make music...for the LORD takes delight in his people. Let the saints rejoice in this honor and singforjoy. ’The Psalm goes on to say that as God’s people rejoice together we will defeat our foes.

  • 29. 28 UNITING THE CHURCH T he Christian Church is engaged in two battles: the battle for eternal souls, and the physical battle for life itself Various groups of Christians are involved in each of these battles. Some churches, and individuals, are actively seeking those who are apparendy headed for eternal damnation. Their message clearly proclaims that Jesus came to forgive sinners. They may ask, “Why save the body ifthe soul is damned for eternity?” Others extend their efforts to meet the needs of those in physical, emotional, or financial crises. They may be asking, “How can the soul be saved ifthere is no physical body?” The Christian Church is like an army. If we are to win the physical and spiritual battle we are fighting, we must unite and focus our efforts. It has been said that the turning point of World War II was the successful landing at Normandy On that day, all the Allied armies attacked on one day. Britain did not attack one day and America another. Their efforts were coordinated with armies that had conquered north Africa and Italy. In a united effort the Allies made their assault and gained the victory; In the same way, we Christians—Catholics, Protestants, and Pro-Life advocates—must join efforts. We can wage war using God’s method, that of praise and celebration, as one mighty army. Just as the U.S. and her allies joined forces on D-Day, let us unite our efforts on Baby’s Day— our B-Day. As Christians we can present our message in a creative and sensitive way so that those in need—whether physical, emotional or financial—can sense God’s love, acceptance, and provision. Then they will be more open to receive His message ofeternal forgiveness. We might think of a homeless man in need of a meal. He happens upon two kitchens. In the first he finds a gourmet cookbook and expensive ingredients. Nearby is a beautifully set table. He turns the pages of the cookbook finding tantalizing pictures accompanying complex recipes. Everything looks absolutely delicious. But there is nothing to satisfy his immediate need. In the second kitchen he finds a humble work area. Steam rises from a pan of oatmeal. A pitcher of cold milk, and a bowl of brown sugar wait beside an empty bowl and a spoon.
  • 30. NATIONAL "Baby's Day 29 In which kitchen will the man’s needs be met? It seems there are churches offering unprepared gourmet food; and there are others that simply offer a bowl of oatmeal. Most of those we try to reach with the Gospel message have immediate needs. They don’t need a fancy, complex message. Their immediate need is to find an expression of a loving, caring, and forgiving Jesus in the form of willing and available Christians. The New Testament writer spoke of such needy people. “You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teachings about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish goodfrom evil, ” Hebrews 5:12-14 Niv. A woman in an unwanted pregnancy is searching for answers that are easily understood. She’s looking for an understanding ally who can provide those answers without condemnation. The thought of bringing a baby into a world that is already a living hell for her is unthinkable. If we are to share the Gospel with such mothers-to-be, we must be creative. We can follow the examples of some church leaders. When the hippies of the 1960s rejected the mainstream church, some church leaders took the time to learn what young people were interested in. Then they offered the Gospel accordingly, in an environment where young people would be comfortable. One such pastor was Chuck Smith of Costa Mesa, California. He scheduled concerts where musicians offered the Gospel message in a musical format that hippies and other young people would enjoy. As a result, thousands were rescued from eternal damnation and have become strong Christians, reaching others for Christ. No matter what the particular strength of an individual church, we can combine our emphases and unite to celebrate life as God intends it.

  • 33. 32 LINKING FORCES WITH CPCs O ften CPC leaders ask for help from churches. Instead, they should be asking how the CPC can help the church. They could go to local pastors and say, “We want to help your church by hosting a Thank God for Babies Celebration. We want to invite to your church all the mothers and babies we’ve helped through our CPC so they can see for themselves the love of God in action. We want to bless your congregation and the community around the church. As missionaries to the unborn we want to do our part to change the hearts of others toward abortion. We will give your church our finest donated baby and maternity clothes to be given away at the celebration.” Not only would the church and the CPC benefit from this partnership, those we reach would see us united in love. The CPC would be helping the church to save the spiritual being of the mother, and the church would be helping the CPC to save the physical being ofthe unborn. Crisis Pregnancy Centers are sometimes called missionaries to the unborn. Yet, they minister mainly to poor women. However, not only poor women kill their babies. Recent statistics indicate that up to thirty percent of abortions are for women in the middle and upper income range. A Baby’s Day celebration can expand a CPC’s mission field. The Pro-Life movement is often accused of failing to care for the mother and baby if she chooses to let it live. Indeed, a Baby’s Day celebration can reach all classes of people, and the entire family.
  • 35. ENLIFEN 34 I f we are to eliminate abortion, or even to reduce the number of abortions, the hearts of those inclined to seek abortions must be changed. Here is the core issue: Why are these babies being conceived in the first place? God has a master plan for mankind. It includes fellowship with Him and healthy relationships with one another. When these two elements are understood and enjoyed, abortion becomes a non-issue. When we embrace God’s love and His pattern for sexual fulfillment within the confines of marriage, there is no need for abortion. We will see all life as precious, beginning at conception: that life begun by a married couple; that life within an unmarried teenager; that life produced out of lustful passion during a rape. God can redeem any situation and turn it for good. Even an unwanted pregnancy. When Christians share the Gospel message they set out To Evangelize. When Christians interweave the Gospel message with the message of the value of life from conception on, we call it To Enlifen. This is the message we offer. Our vehicle we call Baby’s Day—A day when the plans of the initiator of death are crushed. A day when the Creator of Life is worshiped and glorified. A day when the Body of Christ is united through the grace and love ofChrist. Let’s not wait for the reversal of Roe versus Wade. Let Baby’s Day be a reminder, now, that Jesus won the eternal victory over sin and death on the cross at Calvary. Let’s join forces to enlifen our nation.
  • 36. 35 “All tke treasure in the vtorld could, not equal tke Qalue of one precious child.
  • 37. THANK GOD FOR BABIES W hen we hear of a parent who harms or kills his child, we react in horror. It goes against God’s design. He created us to love our children. When we look into the eyes of our children we feel a sense ofjoy. When they are happy we feeljoy; when they are gloomy we are sad. The bond that unites parents with children is miraculous—from God. Those who have lost both a spouse and a child to death report that the greater pain is losing their child. But do we really thank God for babies? During my time in jail while serving in Operation Rescue I had a vision of a palace filled with jewels, gold, diamonds, and rich tapestries. I felt as though I were in Solomon’s palace. As I started to leave 1 noticed the tapestry was forming parts of what looked like a head; then diamonds were part of what looked like closed eyes; jewels were forming ears; and gold was forming a thumb being sucked. I noticed that all the treasures were forming a delicate unborn child. Several weeks passed before I understood what the vision meant: If we combine all the worldly treasures together, they would not equal the value of one unborn child! Jesus told His followers in Luke 12:32-34 to give their possessions to the poor and to store their treasures in heaven. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also, ” he said. C.S. Lewis, in his book, The Weight of Glory, states that, “Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations—these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit...(that become) everlasting splendors.” A friend told me the following story. “Several years ago my husband and 1 provided a home for an unmarried mother-to-be. Each evening she and I prayed together. During those months we awaited the birth of her child we dealt with various issues—anger, forgiveness, her parents’ rejection of her pregnancy, the future ofherselfand her baby.
  • 38. NATIONAL 'Baby's Day 37 “Only days before her delivery she decided that adoption was best for both her and the baby. The decision had been a heart-wrenching process; difficult for me as well because 1 had determined not to influence her in either direction. “Months later she was getting on with her life, settled into a new job and apartment. On the date of her baby’s first birthday she came to me in tears during the morning church service. She wept in my arms at the loss of the child she let go. The love was always there, demonstrated in her case by her decision to place him in a home with two parents.” Yes, we do love babies. My son Jason and 1 were riding our bikes one day and decided to stop off at a graveyard and read some tombstones. Far away I noticed one grave almost completely covered with fresh flowers. Someone just died, I thought. But we discovered that the tombstone was quite old. In fact, the date of death was over twenty years ago. I wondered at the abundance of fresh flowers. Then I noticed the date of birth, only one year prior to the death. I couldn’t help but think that someone’s love for this one-year-old baby girl brought them back, perhaps frequently, to put flowers on a twenty-year-old grave. I left the cemetery with a sense of sadness; yet filled with hope. We do thank God for babies. The Lord made us to dearly love our children. It seems that once a child is born—once we see it or hold it in our arms—it is usually well loved by its parents. The time of emotional turmoil is while the baby is in the womb. For many mothers-to-be it is hard to thank God for the baby in her womb. A friend told me that many years ago when her mother, who already had two children under two and a half, learned that she was pregnant again, she didn’t want another baby. Birth control was just coming into popular use. Having stair-step children was no longer considered acceptable. And besides, the other two were both still in diapers and on the bottle.
  • 39. 38 THANK GOD FOR BABIES Abortion was still illegal then, but that wasn’t the issue. The woman was a Christian. She chose to accept the life within her. So the baby wasn’t destroyed. By the time my friend was bom her mother loved her as much as she loved her other children. Both parents rejoiced over the birth. “I have never experienced a lack of Mom’s love,” she assured me. She went on to add, “I see her willingness to endure once again the birth process, to die to her own preferences, to her own comfort and convenience, and to pour love into yet another young life as a process that symbolizes life itself, and a supreme example of love.” Indeed, in many ways all of pregnancy and motherhood is a denial of one’s self. While pregnant a woman will be in touch with all three of life’s dimensions: the physical, emotional, and spiritual. Almost immediately her hormones will begin to change causing emotional pain. During the early months she will usually face morning sickness. When she is in labor she must die to her physical and emotional self. Of the three dimensions of life, for most women only the spiritual will not be directly impacted. Yet her spiritual strength is able to lift her above the emotional and physical pains during childbirth. Afterwards when she holds her child in her arms she will realize what a blessing God has given her. Because of sin, life comes through the pain of childbirth, which can only be overcome through Jesus Christ (Genesis 3:16). A mother’s suffering during pregnancy and childbirth, in order to bring forth physical life for her child, can be compared to Jesus’ suffering to bring forth eternal life for others. Women experience morning sickness; Jesus was sick to the point of sweating blood (Luke 22:44). Women lose their figures and feel fat; Jesus was beaten and disfigured (Matthew 27:28-31). Women suffer with aches and pain from the extra weight they gain; Jesus ached as He carried the weight of the cross (John 19:17). Pregnancy produces stretch marks on the mother’s body; Jesus was left with nail prints in His hands and feet (John 20:24-27). During the birth process, blood and water flows from the mother; from Jesus’ side flowed blood and water (John 19:34). Jesus suffered greatly to give us forgiveness and eternal life. In the Garden of Gethsemane He could have refused to go to the cross. Instead, Jesus chose to give up His life to bring forth everlasting life for others. Why? According to Hebrews 12:2, it was “for the joy set before him [that He] endured the cross. ” Note the word endured. Jesus said, “A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but

  • 43. 42 GENERAL GUIDELINES Guidelines For Baby's Day Celebration Date: The now official Date for Baby’s Day (Babies Day) is June 24th and celebrated on that day or the following Saturday. We ask that all churches fulfill five elements during this national missionary outreach: • Present the Gospel message • Allow for open baby dedications • /Ml games and items be offered free except food • .Alcoholic beverages not permitted • Promoting any business, other than 501C3 non-profit ministries, not permitted Note: Baby’s Day should not be used as a fund raiser. Instead it should be a missionary’ outreach to the community’ to change hearts. General Guidelines I. Overview We see three phases or plans for hosting a “Thank God For Babies Celebration” on Baby’s Day. The three plans will be discussed in detail on pages 54-55. We suggest the churches start with Phase or Plan I, move on to Plan II the following year, and continue on with Plan III in subsequent years. Whichever plan is chosen, we suggest that all celebrations be a union of a Christian Church and either a Crisis Pregnancy’ Center or Crisis Pregnancy Shelter. The guidelines listed in this chapter can be used for all three plans. In order to get volunteers to launch a new outreach and to initiate this type of ministry, strong pastoral leadership is a must. The pastor will personally assign a committee to host the event. Announcements should
  • 44. national'Baby's Day 43 be made far in advance, and reminders given periodically in church bulletins and from the pulpit. II. Churches A. Church General—Five months prior to the event a planning committee needs to be formed. Two weeks prior to the celebration the church is requested to have an invitation flyer (see page 68) inserted into the service bulletin or missalet. The invitation will allow all pregnant mothers or mothers with small children to receive free used baby clothes at the church-sponsored baby celebration . The congregation will be asked to give this card to any mothers they know. B. Small Churches—are encouraged to unite with other churches within their denomination or with other churches with common interests. They can establish a yearly consortium to host the event. Each church could host one ofthe activities mentioned in Plan I later in this chapter. A church could host a different activity each year or create a new one that uplifts mothers and their children. A different church could host the main event each year; they would carry the overall responsibility and be more likely to receive the blessings ofnew believers joining their congregation . The pastor ofthe church hosting the event would be responsible for the baby dedication and sharing the Good News. C. Large Churches—are well suited to host the event by designating one of their active ministries or home fellowships to coordinate the outreach. III. Praise Songs and Baby Dedications— As parents hold their children, the host pastor will lead in a song of praise to God for the gift of life and the particular gift of babies. Suggested songs: The Doxology: Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow Faith Of Our Fathers O Worship The King Holy, Holy, Holy Praise Him, Praise Him God Of Our Fathers Great Is Thy Faithfulness
  • 45. 44 GENERAL GUIDELINES Each pastor or group of pastors will decide how a baby dedication should be done. However, we suggest that if less than three babies are to be dedicated, they be done individually. If more than three, they can be dedicated as a group . Baby dedication certificates (see page 72) could be prepared and distributed after the dedication. IV. CPC's or Shelters A. Asking the Church—Pastors often are asked by para-church ministries for financial help. Baby’s Day is an excellent opportunity for the CPC or Shelter to help the church grow. The CPC director could approach the pastor to offer the church and the surrounding community free used baby clothes. The CPC and/or Shelter could also host some of the games or events. We see this as an excellent way of building a solid relationship with the church. B. Inviting Mothers—An invitation can be sent to all the mothers the CPC has helped. This will help them understand mothers are cared for after the baby is bom, as well as while they are pregnant. C. CPC Booth—A booth with printed materials and counselors can be placed adjacent to the line for free baby clothes. Or several booths can be set up, with each one showing a stage of development of the growing child. As the mothers enter the baby celebration they will be able to see the child develop and be able to ask questions. Information and equipment needed for the booth: 1. Information on fatherhood and the importance of raising children the Biblical way. 2. If available, display either models or pictures of the developing child in the womb. 3. Information on post-abortion counseling and a counselor available to help mothers in need. 4. Space in the booth for larger donations like cribs, car seats, etc. to give away to mothers based on their needs. V. Games and activities The volunteers for games should be scheduled for two shifts: 10:00am—Noon, and Noon—2:00pm. (See Event Coordinator Sheet on page 59.) Volunteers may be rotated among the Games and Activities if desired.
  • 46. national'Babg's Day 45 To prevent loss, materials for Games and Activities should be checked out by the Event Coordinator. (See Check-out list on page 59.) A. Games—The games listed on pages 78-85 were all created to have interaction between the parent and child to promote the family. We believe inexpensive games with lots ofcreativity can be even more fun than a ride at Disneyland. Please send any new game ideas to TenderHearts Family Ministries. B. Clowns and Face Painting—Small children love to have their faces painted, especially if a clown does it. Someone can dress like a clown and use removable face painting makeup. Clown costumes can be rented and the makeup can be purchased at any large party supplies store. C. Balloons and Decorations—Balloons can be used to decorate the tables. If a stage will be used for a band or for the baby dedications, we recommend attaching the balloons to strings and making a rainbow above the stage. You can rent a helium tank from most party supply stores or blow up the balloons yourself. Or you can ask at a car dealership for the contact person who prepares balloons for their parking lot when they have sales. VI. Baby Clothes Giveaway/Exchange A. Description—We suggest all baby celebrations include a baby clothes giveaway for children up to age seven. Pregnant mothers and mothers with small children will receive free baby clothes (limit per mother is suggested). The reason for the baby clothes giveaway is to help make motherhood a little easier and to share the message by giving them a card that says “God bless you for choosing life.” We see this as a great evangelistic way to show the surrounding community that Jesus is alive and cares for mothers and their precious children bom and unborn. B. Donated Clothes and Toys—The pastor can announce that baby clothes are to be donated for Baby’s Day for three months prior to the event. Announcements can point out that this is one way church families can help save the unborn. A sample hand out sheet describing what items are needed for the exchange is shown on page 67. Larger donated items, such as cribs, changing tables, car seats, etc., should be given for later distribution, to the participating CPC at the celebration. All left over clothing and accessories could be given to the participating CPC.
  • 47. GENERAL GUIDELINES C. Equipment Needed—Depending on the size of the church, these are examples of the kind of equipment needed to host Baby’s Day celebration. • Four clothing racks. • Sixteen tables. Fourteen for the clothes and two for checking out the clothes. • Twenty posters that will be affixed to the tables and racks stating size of the clothing. • Barricading streamers to partition offbaby clothes exchange area. • Over three hundred bags. Bags may be donated by a local grocery store. • PA system to announce the card numbers or a dry erasable board mounted high. D. Procedures—How to host a giveaway: • Each mother is given a card that says “God Bless You For Choosing Life” (see page 70). The cards are numbered in order. A small group is invited, according to the numbers listed on the cards. They are then invited into the area where the clothes are given away , perhaps ten at a time, depending on the space allowed. After the allocated five minutes, call for the next group. The amount ofmothers and time should be varied with how many mothers are waiting for clothes. A Praise Band or M.C. should call out the numbers being served at regular intervals . If a PA system is not available , we suggest a chalk board to list the numbers . This will free parents to wander around instead of standing in line. • All clothes donated will be sorted by size and gender and laid out on the tables and racks accordingly. • A limit can be set on the number of clothes and accessories given to each mother, perhaps five. However, this needs to be determined by your committee and determined by the number of clothes you collect. E. Personnel—To reduce confusion there should be a minimum of ten volunteers stationed at the clothing exchange. • Two per check-out table making a total of four. • Four to assist the visitors in locating clothes and accessories. • One to periodically inform the band as to the numbers to be called out. • One to hand out the numbered cards.
  • 48. NATIONAL'Baby's Day VII. Toy Distribution The celebrations following Plan II or III will need toys as prizes for participating in the games. • Baby Fun Card—At the entrance to the event mothers will receive a Baby Fun Card that lists each game (see page 66). Each time a child participates in a game, the card is stamped where the name ofthe game is listed. Ifthe child wins an event, his card can be stamped twice on the name of the game. Rubber stamps can be purchased through most Christian book stores. • Toy Display—All donated toys should be displayed in one comer of the celebration. We suggest two ladders connected by planks of wood or shelves on the steps. Each shelf should be labeled with a number, each number representing the amount of stamps on the Baby Fun Card. The higher the number the more valuable the prize. A mother familiar with the value of the toys can be assigned to this responsibility. • Toy Pick-up—When the family is ready to leave, they can go to the toy display area to pick up their toys based on the number of stamps on the Baby Fun Card. VIII. Coordinators There should be seven coordinators to initiate Plan III (see page 59 for coordinator sheet). Plans I and II do not require all these positions because one person could be assigned to several tasks. • Advertising & Public Relations • Activities, games and events • Counseling and information on • Clothing distribution God’s intent for the family (includes Gospel message) Treasurer • Music and entertainment • Food stand
  • 49. 48 - GENERAL GUIDELINES IX. Volunteer Sources A. Mother's of Pre-Schoolers (MOPS)—MOPS groups should be recruited by the church to hand out flyers to pregnant mothers and friends in advance and to help coordinate some of the activities. B. Boy and Girl Scout Troops—Badges can be awarded to volunteers who participate. Awards can also be given to those who provide the best game or activity that promotes family and life. C. Home Bible Study Groups—Pastors can request that each Bible study group help with one of the activities. D. Marriage Encounter—Churches that sponsor Marriage Encounter could enlist participants to help with activities, invite families to the event, and to host booths at the celebration. E. American Association of Retired People—Senior citizen groups can be contacted to help. X. Baby's Day Petition to Congressmen At the entrance to the celebration a petition sheet can be made available where children can have their hands stamped and the parents can sign the child’s name and address. When enough petition sheets have been received by TenderHearts Family Ministries they will be sent to Congressmen, Supreme Court judges, and the President to request an official Baby’s Day. XI. Advertising and Promotion A. Advertising—This is probably the most critical aspect of the celebration. The best responses have been from ads in local Parenting Magazines, Pennysaver and Recycler, in that order. Advertisements do not need to be large. For instance, in the Pennysaver we placed only two advertisements: one in the events column, the other in the children’s clothes section. The advertisement simply said “Free Baby Clothes and Lots ofFun! Thank God For Babies Celebration this June 24th. Please Call... Church at...”. The Parenting advertisement (or any magazine or newspaper advertisement) should have a bold border and emphasize “Free Baby Clothes 99 B. Press Releases—A press release should be as positive as possible. You’ll find a generic press release before and after the event following this paragraph . Also, on page 53 is a list of some talking points to keep in mind during interviews with the press.

Pastor Kevin Williams said, “I've never seen so many pregnant women in one place. It was quite a sight." According to Sharon Brown, director of Bethany Crisis Pregnancy Center and co-sponsor of the Baby's Day Celebration, those who oppose abortion are often accused of not caring for the women or the babies they choose not to abort. “This is our way of offering further support. We gave clothing to every pregnant woman and to each child under the age of seven. The clothes were contributed by Pro-Life supporters who want to help women who have chosen life for their unborn babies." One young woman, Debbie Carver, pushed a stroller carrying a newborn while keeping an eye on her two-year-old son. “Everywhere I looked I saw either pregnant women or parents with small children. When I'm home with my kids I tend to feel I’m the only one. It was quite encouraging to realize there are many others who have chosen to give life to their kids—to make them a priority." The party atmosphere was contagious as one strolled through the church grounds. There were booths where dads can get information on fathering. A slalom with a stroller race, apple sauce eating contests, diaper changing races and baby weight lifting contests.
  • 51. 50 GENERAL GUIDELINES A table filled with literature drew the curious and confused. Some brochures included pictures of dismembered aborted babies. But the majority of the material was up-beat and informative, offering alternate options such as adoption, shelters for unmarried mothers-to-be, and counseling centers for their families as well as the often forgotten fathers of the babies. Jason Gonzales, who recently learned his girlfriend is expecting twins said he had thought maybe the babies should be aborted. “This today has convinced me that life is precious." Almost as a declaration of determination he added, “I'm going to marry her and become a responsible dad." Although older children and teenagers comprised only a small percentage of those attending, they were enthusiastic participants. While her sister, Elizabeth helped mothers find clothes that fit their children, sixteen-year-old Katie Peterson helped run a booth where toddlers competed in an apple sauce eating contest. “I love kids," said Katie. "I want to have at least six when I'm married. In fact, I plan to become a midwife. But for now, I want to encourage young mothers to love the babies they're carrying." After two decades of condemnation and protests, Pro-Life supporters found a positive way to demonstrate. “We want to do this every year," said Pastor Williams. "We feel it's a way we can both help families and communicate the value of life." AGENCIES OFFERING ASSISTANCE TO PREGNANT WOMEN A Sidebar to accompany Baby's Day Story. When an unmarried woman learns she's pregnant she needs acceptance, emotional support, encouragement, and someone to help her explore her options. According to Pastor Kevin Williams of First Community Church, a Baby's Day Celebration taking place this Saturday, January -, was planned to offer an alternative way for Pro-Life advocates to express their support for both unmarried mothers-to-be, and families with young children. "We want to turn the focus on the living," says Pastor Williams. "Our goal is to offer practical help and emotional support to those who choose life instead of abortion."
  • 53. 52 GENERAL GUIDELINES First Community Church members, and the staff and supporters of the CPC will combine efforts to host the day's activities. Located on the church grounds, Baby's Day has something to offer the entire family. Pastor Williams says, “When we embrace God's love and His pattern for sexual fulfillment within the confines of marriage, there is no need for abortion. We will see all life as precious, beginning at conception: that life begun by a married couple; that life within an unmarried teenager; that life produced out of lustful passion during a rape. God can redeem any situation, and turn it for good." He added, "even an unwanted pregnancy." Moms racing empty strollers, dads..., and babies trying to eat the most apple sauce are only a few of the games planned. At booths staffed by people of all ages, older children will be playing frisbee catch, basketball, weight lifting, and potato sack races. Church families and Bethany's staff and friends have been collecting like-new clothing for infants through age seven to distribute to those attending Baby’s Day. "We want to show in a tangible way that we care about babies and their parents," said Sharon Brown, director of Bethany. If others in the community would like to contribute, they can call the church office. "We offer not only counseling to help the pregnant woman plan for the future, but help for all involved—the baby's father, and both families," she added. Baby's Day was started in 1994 in Orange County, California, by Simon Cassar, with the goal to celebrate life. Cassar says, "We want to turn the Pro-Life focus away from death and the destruction of life. Many churches across the nation are uniting efforts for a once-a-year
  • 54. NATIONAL'Baby's Day 53 celebration of life. Baby's Day shows that we can unite the church on this most controversial issue." The Baby's Day Celebration begins at 11:00 a.m. at the First Community Church, 123 E. Center Street, Anytown. For additional information call: 222-3333. QUESTIONS REGARDING BABY'S DAY 1. What is the reason and purpose for this event? • Men need to show their support towards mothers and take responsibility to be thefather that God wants us to be. To show the community that babies are truly a blessingfrom Almighty God. • To help the church promote itspro-life beliefs in apositive evangelical way. • To show mothers andfathers the love ofJesus and to say “God bless youfor choosing life! ” • We have a Mother's Day and a Father's Day, why not an official Baby's Day! 2. Don’t you think that by putting on this event that you will be promoting teenage pregnancies which are already at an epidemic level? fke have set up a booth to address this very issue. Yes, babies are a blessing, but theirfill blessing is only expressed when they are in a loving caring family environment. However, no /natter who the mother is, ifshe is a teenager, or a /mother in her lateryears oflife, we still believe a live baby is a greater blessing, than an aborted, dead baby! 3. What type of information is in the booth to help prevent teenage pregnancies? Counselors are available to discuss issues on Christian morality, abstinence, marriageplanning, post-abortion depression, and the importance ofafather in a child's life.

Description and Timeline 1. Five months prior to the event initiate a committee and prepare flyers and “God Bless You For Choosing Life” cards. Assign volunteers to give away clothes. 2. Reserve an auditorium for the event. Even if your church is located in the sunshine belt, an auditorium is best to have in case foul weather moves you indoors. 3. Three months prior to the event the pastor requests baby and maternity clothes and toy donations from the congregation. Follow-up requests are needed after the original announcement. 4. Two months prior to the event, registration sign-up sheets for open dedications should be placed in the foyer. The pastor can ask parishioners to hold offhaving their babies dedicated until the baby celebration. 5. One month prior to the event , place Local newspapers and Recycler advertisements . The advertisements need to be sent out two times, the first two weeks prior to the event, the second the week on the event. 6. Ask the congregation to hand out flyers to any friends or relatives that are pregnant or have small children. The “Thank God For Babies Celebration” flyer alone could change the heart of someone feeling alone in her pregnancy. 7. On the day of the event set up tables for the clothes at 7:00 am. Have the staff and volunteers gather for prayer. 8. Open the clothing giveaway at 10:00 am. 9. • 87. For over twenty years we’ve been hearing of aborted babies, protests, and jail terms. Many among us who are opposed to abortion have concluded that Pro-Life is just too controversial, and have stayed on the sidelines. Many ofus would like to keep the issue of abortion at a distance. Instead, let s not only focus on death and negatives, let us joyfully celebrate life. By doing so, we may see people become more open to being involved in the Pro-Life cause. LET’S CELEBRATE LIFE! Baby’s Day shows how we can unite the church on this most controversial issue.
