Top 10 Incredible Smells
"Let me tell you that every city has its distinct smell." E. M. Forster stated as much in A
Room With a View. I am fascinated by smell, especially the smells of history as an amateur
perfumer.
I chose the pastime after discovering a priceless and rare vial of the 1905 perfume L'Origan.
When I opened the box it came in, I was instantly overcome by the perfume that made one
newspaper reporter remark, "All Paris smells of L'Origan!" A small amount of perfume had
escaped. It was an exhilarating moment. I was experiencing the world via their sense of
smell. The individuals who created this smell were now simply bystanders on the eroding
pages of history, but I was now a part of their legacy.

I became completely obsessed with perfume and the smell of the world starting on that day. I
started making my own fragrances using the most odd and uncommon perfumes and
components I could find. I even made a lot of my perfume formulae available online. I put all
of my effort on comprehending odor, including its psychological impact on us and the
incredibly potent influence it has over our sense of memory.
My first trip to Europe when I was 16 just blew me away. However, it wasn't the Eiffel Tower,
Buckingham Palace, or the Venetian canals that stayed with me long after the trip was over;
rather, it was the everyday experiences of life: the colors of road markings and signs, the
advertisements in storefront windows, the local snacks, and—most importantly—the sounds
and smells of the place.

This brings us to the list. Ten noteworthy objects, locations, and their associated odors are
collected here. Please be aware that some of the material on this list may be upsetting. After
that: I'm happy to inform that in 2022 I finally transitioned from a hobbyist to a professional
and started the upscale perfume company Frater Perfumes.
10Space
Given that space is a vacuum, it shouldn't smell. But it still does. First off, there is a massive
ball of sweet, fruity, rum-scented gas in the galaxy's center (the chemical is called Ethyl
Formate). Why does it exist? Nobody is aware. We know from astronaut reports that other
smells in space are similarly related to food, with some describing them as sulfurous and
meaty. Thomas Jones, another astronaut, stated that there is a definite ozone scent that is
similar to burnt gunpowder or the electrical equipment ozone smell as you repressurize the
airlock and exit your suit. [1]
Don Pettit, the science officer for the International Space Station, made the following
observations: "The best description I can think of is metallic; a quite lovely sweet metallic
sensation. It brought back memories of the summers I spent in college working long hours
with an arc welding torch to fix large pieces of machinery for a small forestry operation. It
had a lovely, sweet welding fumes-like aroma. That scent is the aroma of space. [2]
Obviously in a vacuum you can’t smell anything directly, but there are millions of particles
floating around that do have a scent and it is when they adhere to the suits worn by the
astronauts or enter through the airlocks that these observations are made. Interestingly
NASA has tried to replicate the scent on earth as part of their training for future astronauts.

9Sundry Planets
What about the planets while we are talking about space? Due to the chemical makeup of
their atmospheres, we can roughly anticipate the smell of the various planets. Due to clouds
of sulfuric acid in the atmosphere, Venus smells like rotten eggs; similarly, Mars and Uranus
smell the same due to sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. [3]
The smell of Jupiter varies depending on where you are since each layer of its atmosphere
is composed of various compounds. Due to the unpleasant hydrogen cyanide in some
layers, you will smell delicious bitter almonds, but in other layers (those close to the top), you
will smell the unpleasant scent of ammonia (cleaning products). Actually, benzyl cyanide,
which is essentially innocuous, gives off the almond-like cyanide odor naturally in flowers like
jasmine. [4] Due to atmospheres made up primarily of odorless gasses, the rest of the
planets lack noticeable scents for the most part.

8Death
Acetone is one of the most prevalent smells released when someone is dying (the very fruity
smelling chemical that is used as nail polish remover). However, in other instances, that is
paired with disagreeable smells that come from the specific illness the person is dying from.
After a person passes away, the body starts to decay, releasing a number of compounds
with fairly suitable names. The first two are cadaverine and putrescine, which, as their
names suggest, have an unpleasant putrid smell. Why do these substances leave our
bodies? Some people think it's an evolutionary trait made to signal to others when danger is
around. It is thought to activate the human flight or fight response. [5]
Other compounds are also released; they include dimethyl sulfide, which smells like garlic,
skatole, which smells like feces, methanethiol, which smells like rotten cabbage, and
hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. A veritable concoction of disgusting vapors
Would learning that all of these are utilized as food additives and are also present in many
perfumes shock you? An otherwise sterile combination of components gets a lot more
beautiful with a little stench. These repulsive substances naturally occur in flowers to draw
insects, and they also draw us. [6]
Let me start by saying that Marie Antoinette, the infamous French queen, did not exclaim,
"Let them eat cake!" Since every website in the world has now replicated our 2007 list of
historical myths in which we shared this tiny fact with the internet, I hesitate to bring it up, but
twelve years later we have a fresh audience, so it is worth mentioning just in case.

7Versailles Palace
Let me start by saying that Marie Antoinette, the infamous French queen, did not exclaim,
"Let them eat cake!" Since every website in the world has now replicated our 2007 list of
historical myths in which we shared this tiny fact with the internet, I hesitate to bring it up, but
twelve years later we have a fresh audience, so it is worth mentioning just in case.
King Louis XVI and Queen Marie resided in Versailles Palace. When you are next in France,
I urge you to visit this lovely location. We all have fantasies about a life filled with delectable
scents, sweets, princes, and pompadours, but we never consider the other two "p"s: piss
and poop. In the 18th century, plumbing was very scarce, and Versailles Palace had few
internal amenities (flush toilets were in the royal apartments only). Because of this, the
primary choice when nature called was a tiny porcelain pot known as a bourdaloue. Women
simply hitched up their skirts and went out because they lacked underpants (as you see in
the image above). However, the palace is enormous, so occasionally individuals might be
taken off guard. In those circumstances, a calm area would do. After all, your slaves would
do the cleanup. The opulent Palace of Versailles was a rather smelly place to be, what with
the smoke from failing chimneys, the carelessness of overworked employees, and the
smoke from failing chimneys. [7]
A candle that smells like the Versailles floors is actually made by the storied French candle
manufacturer Cir Trudon, according to their description: "This regal perfume emits vapours
of wax, candelabra, and castle. Coniferous trees form a tapestry through which a lavish trail
of incense winds, punctuated by citrus fruit sunrays. You'll need to add your own "ps" if you
want the fragrance of the palace to be absolutely realistic. The aroma of the candle is
actually fairly delicate and quite classy. On Amazon, it is offered for the somewhat steep
price of $100.

6The Roman Colosseum
The Roman Colosseum featured a huge variety of performances, including live animal hunts
with exotic animals and gladiator bouts. Of course, throughout the Christian persecutions
that followed, Christians were slaughtered in a number of ways, including by being eaten by
wild animals. [8]
But because the Roman populace was delicate and found the smell of blood repulsive, the
Colosseum had a really cunning way to aid. The velarium, an awning that was placed over
the heads of the paying visitors, served as a shelter from the hot sun and a barrier against
any rain that might have fallen. In order to keep the viewers' heads cool and to partially
reduce the smell of death, there were also deftly hidden tubes that continuously sprayed
fragrant water over the awning. Additional fountains in the form of statues that also released
aromatic water served as a supplement to these. Saffron and verbena, which was recently
banned by the European Union for use in any products intended for human skin contact,
were the main ingredients in the perfume. [9]

5Drugs
Since ancient times, people have utilized drugs in their natural state. We weren't persuaded
to forgo them and take medication in a synthesized form until the 19th and 20th centuries,
thanks to the efforts of pharmaceutical firms. The majority of us probably wouldn't recognize
the scent of a drug if it were thrust in our faces (except perhaps marijuana as few people
have had a chance to not inhale that at least once). The following is a brief list of popular
medications and their smells:
Opium: When smoked, this substance has a sweet, somewhat charred marshmallow aroma.
Heroin: When burnt, heroin emits a very potent vinegar odor. The smell decreases with
quality, although it still exists in all forms to some extent. Because heroin is made from
opium using a process that generates vinegar as a waste product, it smells like that. Drug
dogs are looking for the vinegar smell.
Cocaine predominantly has the floral scent of methyl benzoate, which also gives feijoas their
characteristic flavor and the rich aroma of tuberose. Drug detection dogs also search for
vinegar and this chemical. [10]
Methamphetamine: Both meth and crack have a smell that is reminiscent of burnt plastic
mixed with glass cleaner. Regular use can cause an ammonia odor to develop on a person's
skin. Delightful. [11]

4The Titanic
The enormous Titanic body, which had been split in two, fell to the ocean below in the wee
hours of April 15, 1912. That night, more than 1,300 persons perished.
The first scents a passenger encountered on board the ship were those of fresh varnish,
paint, and freshly sawn wood. Back then, lead was still used in the manufacture of paint, and
linseed oil was used in large quantities. On that fatal night, the delicious aromas of roasting
duck, lamb, and beef, all of which were on the first class menu, would have been present in
addition to the scent of smoke from the coal-powered engines. [12]
The bluish hour, a fragrance described as "velvety delicate and romantic" by Guerlain, was
just released in the same year. It is a scent of bluish dusk and anticipation of night, before
the first stars show in the sky. [13] There would have been several women on the first class
deck who would have scented it because it was pricey, in high demand, and expensive.
There is no disputing that the scent is still available now and that it still evokes memories of
that tragic evening.
But on April 14, 1912, at 11 p.m., a new stench with a metallic edge started to emerge. It
smelled like an iceberg. Icebergs will pick up the smell of their surroundings, just like ice in
your freezer will pick up the diverse flavors of other things kept there. This is influenced by
interactions between marine life and the chemical make-up of the water in which the iceberg
is generated. The ship may not have been rescued, but there may have been more survivors
if they had recognized the faintly metallic smell of ice. The iceberg that the Titanic allegedly
collided with is shown; remnants of the ship's paint may be seen on it.

3Ancient Egyptian Temples
love anything about ancient Egypt. I could not get my hands on enough books about the
ancient civilization when I was a teenager. I even made the decision to one day migrate to
Egypt and revive the former Pharaonic kingdoms after teaching myself how to read simple
hieroglyphics and learning the names of all the gods. Though my ambition to succeed the
current King of Egypt was unsuccessful, I never lost my passion with the country. I'm
embarrassed to say that I haven't been there yet.
Given that frankincense and myrrh are the two major components of the most widely used
church incense, if you have ever visited a Catholic church, you are definitely familiar with its
aroma. Since the Ancient Egyptians utilized the same resins in their temples, you were
probably greeted by the intense aroma of incense when you arrived. Additionally, the
Egyptian churches were decorated with flowers, just like our own. Lotus blooms, reeds, and
other marsh vegetation were the most prevalent. The lotus has a very fragrant, fruit-like
aroma. Additionally, the dreary marsh plants would have added an undercurrent of water and
mud while yet dominating with that sickening sweetness. Other fragrant flowers would have
included jasmine, with its hypnotic indole-fecal perfume, sweet-smelling roses in bloom, and
the strong scent of fresh mandrake, reminiscent of dried tobacco. [14]
Food sacrifices to the gods' pantheon would likely be the next odor to emanate from the
temple. Typically, this consisted of hot off the oven bread and roasted meats. You may now
picture the temple having a fragrance reminiscent of Christmastime in a contemporary rural
community. When provided during certain seasons of the year, milk, herbs, and vegetables
would soon have given the meal a faintly sour, decaying smell.
What possible combination of scents could be more perfect? All of life's foul components
together in one location. A truly wonderful picture of life in Ancient Egypt can be created by
adding the serious chanting of the priests, the distant noises of exotic creatures kept as pets,
and the melodic instruments of street beggars.

2The Holocaust
The Nazi regime abolished the Jewish Ghettos in 1942, and mass deportations by train were
under way. Except for one bucket in the corner, which was obviously made useless very
quickly, there were no rest stops for bathroom breaks and no facilities for the sick. Vomit,
excrement, and urine stench pervaded the whole trip from city to camp. Both inside and
outside of the trains, the worst manifestations of man's animal nature were on display.
The scent was unrecognizable to anybody in the camps who had ever smelled it before,
according to individuals who witnessed the incineration of victims. We only detect the aroma
of seared flesh when meat is prepared for consumption. Not the case when a person gets
burned. Burning human fat and beef-like aromas from burning flesh would have made up the
majority of the nauseating odors that pervaded the camps on a regular basis. This would be
followed by the foul smells of sulfur from burning hair and nails, a coppery metal stench from
burning blood and iron-rich organs, and spinal fluid which burns with a sickening sweet
musky smell resembling perfume. It has a strong aroma that is practically edible. [15]
There was also the fallout. American GIs who were sent in to free the camps reported they
could smell the odor before they ever noticed the inmates. For kilometers around, "the scent
pervaded the entire countryside." Disease, including typhus, dysentery, and TB, was
widespread, according to one Private. The crematory had been running continuously, and
the smell of mounds of human waste and corpses was horrifying. [16]

1Sanctity
Saints emit an odor. Okay, some saints do. The odor of sanctity, also known as osmogenesia
or odore di santità in Italian, is the antithesis of the sulfur-based odore di zolfo, or smell of
death. There are many diverse manifestations of this odor of sanctity. While for some saints
it is an afterlife smell that typically accompanies incorruptibility, for others it is a lovely aroma
that they mysteriously release while they are still alive.Others experience it as
sweet-smelling liquids dripping from the tomb containing the saint's mortal body. The life of
St. Simeon Stylites (died 459 A.D.), who spent 37 years perched on a pillar with his flesh
slowly decaying beneath the instruments of mortification he wore, is one of the most
dramatic accounts of the aroma of holiness. According to legend, the saint sent out a
perfume-like scent. Sadly, a rocket in Aleppo in 2016 damaged the pillar he was standing on.
What therefore does the scent of holiness entail? With notes of honey, butter, roses, violets,
frankincense, myrrh, pipe tobacco, jasmine, and lilies, it is generally described as sweet. [17]
Additionally, there is a feeling that the fragrance is unnatural. St. Therese of Lisieux's
incorrupt corpse, which is seen above, smelt of roses, lilies, and violets, while St. Polycarp's
body, while burning at the stake, was believed to fill the air with the scent of incense in the
second century. Additionally, a holy odor is reported to emanate from stigmata scars.

Thomas Jones, another astronaut, stated that there is a definite ozone scent that is similar to burnt gunpowder or the electrical equipment ozone smell as you repressurize the airlock and exit your suit. [1] Don Pettit, the science officer for the International Space Station, made the following observations: "The best description I can think of is metallic; a quite lovely sweet metallic sensation. It brought back memories of the summers I spent in college working long hours with an arc welding torch to fix large pieces of machinery for a small forestry operation. It had a lovely, sweet welding fumes-like aroma. That scent is the aroma of space. [2] Obviously in a vacuum you can’t smell anything directly, but there are millions of particles floating around that do have a scent and it is when they adhere to the suits worn by the astronauts or enter through the airlocks that these observations are made. Interestingly NASA has tried to replicate the scent on earth as part of their training for future astronauts. CLICK HERE AND WIN 100$ WALMART GIFT CARD
  • 3. 9Sundry Planets What about the planets while we are talking about space? Due to the chemical makeup of their atmospheres, we can roughly anticipate the smell of the various planets. Due to clouds of sulfuric acid in the atmosphere, Venus smells like rotten eggs; similarly, Mars and Uranus smell the same due to sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide. [3] The smell of Jupiter varies depending on where you are since each layer of its atmosphere is composed of various compounds. Due to the unpleasant hydrogen cyanide in some layers, you will smell delicious bitter almonds, but in other layers (those close to the top), you will smell the unpleasant scent of ammonia (cleaning products). Actually, benzyl cyanide, which is essentially innocuous, gives off the almond-like cyanide odor naturally in flowers like jasmine. [4] Due to atmospheres made up primarily of odorless gasses, the rest of the planets lack noticeable scents for the most part. CLICK HERE AND WIN 100$ WALMART GIFT CARD
  • 4. 8Death Acetone is one of the most prevalent smells released when someone is dying (the very fruity smelling chemical that is used as nail polish remover). However, in other instances, that is paired with disagreeable smells that come from the specific illness the person is dying from. After a person passes away, the body starts to decay, releasing a number of compounds with fairly suitable names. The first two are cadaverine and putrescine, which, as their names suggest, have an unpleasant putrid smell. Why do these substances leave our bodies? Some people think it's an evolutionary trait made to signal to others when danger is around. It is thought to activate the human flight or fight response. [5] Other compounds are also released; they include dimethyl sulfide, which smells like garlic, skatole, which smells like feces, methanethiol, which smells like rotten cabbage, and hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. A veritable concoction of disgusting vapors Would learning that all of these are utilized as food additives and are also present in many perfumes shock you? An otherwise sterile combination of components gets a lot more beautiful with a little stench. These repulsive substances naturally occur in flowers to draw insects, and they also draw us. [6] Let me start by saying that Marie Antoinette, the infamous French queen, did not exclaim, "Let them eat cake!" Since every website in the world has now replicated our 2007 list of historical myths in which we shared this tiny fact with the internet, I hesitate to bring it up, but twelve years later we have a fresh audience, so it is worth mentioning just in case. • 5. 7Versailles Palace Let me start by saying that Marie Antoinette, the infamous French queen, did not exclaim, "Let them eat cake!" Since every website in the world has now replicated our 2007 list of historical myths in which we shared this tiny fact with the internet, I hesitate to bring it up, but twelve years later we have a fresh audience, so it is worth mentioning just in case. King Louis XVI and Queen Marie resided in Versailles Palace. When you are next in France, I urge you to visit this lovely location. We all have fantasies about a life filled with delectable scents, sweets, princes, and pompadours, but we never consider the other two "p"s: piss and poop. In the 18th century, plumbing was very scarce, and Versailles Palace had few internal amenities (flush toilets were in the royal apartments only). Because of this, the primary choice when nature called was a tiny porcelain pot known as a bourdaloue. Women
  • 6. simply hitched up their skirts and went out because they lacked underpants (as you see in the image above). However, the palace is enormous, so occasionally individuals might be taken off guard. In those circumstances, a calm area would do. After all, your slaves would do the cleanup. The opulent Palace of Versailles was a rather smelly place to be, what with the smoke from failing chimneys, the carelessness of overworked employees, and the smoke from failing chimneys. [7] A candle that smells like the Versailles floors is actually made by the storied French candle manufacturer Cir Trudon, according to their description: "This regal perfume emits vapours of wax, candelabra, and castle. Coniferous trees form a tapestry through which a lavish trail of incense winds, punctuated by citrus fruit sunrays. You'll need to add your own "ps" if you want the fragrance of the palace to be absolutely realistic. The aroma of the candle is actually fairly delicate and quite classy. On Amazon, it is offered for the somewhat steep price of $100. Of course, throughout the Christian persecutions
  • 7. that followed, Christians were slaughtered in a number of ways, including by being eaten by wild animals. [8] But because the Roman populace was delicate and found the smell of blood repulsive, the Colosseum had a really cunning way to aid. The velarium, an awning that was placed over the heads of the paying visitors, served as a shelter from the hot sun and a barrier against any rain that might have fallen. In order to keep the viewers' heads cool and to partially reduce the smell of death, there were also deftly hidden tubes that continuously sprayed fragrant water over the awning. Additional fountains in the form of statues that also released aromatic water served as a supplement to these. Saffron and verbena, which was recently banned by the European Union for use in any products intended for human skin contact, were the main ingredients in the perfume. We weren't persuaded to forgo them and take medication in a synthesized form until the 19th and 20th centuries, thanks to the efforts of pharmaceutical firms. The majority of us probably wouldn't recognize the scent of a drug if it were thrust in our faces (except perhaps marijuana as few people
  • 8. have had a chance to not inhale that at least once). The following is a brief list of popular medications and their smells: Opium: When smoked, this substance has a sweet, somewhat charred marshmallow aroma. Heroin: When burnt, heroin emits a very potent vinegar odor. The smell decreases with quality, although it still exists in all forms to some extent. Because heroin is made from opium using a process that generates vinegar as a waste product, it smells like that. Drug dogs are looking for the vinegar smell. Cocaine predominantly has the floral scent of methyl benzoate, which also gives feijoas their characteristic flavor and the rich aroma of tuberose. Drug detection dogs also search for vinegar and this chemical. [10] Methamphetamine: Both meth and crack have a smell that is reminiscent of burnt plastic mixed with glass cleaner. Regular use can cause an ammonia odor to develop on a person's skin. Delightful. That night, more than 1,300 persons perished. The first scents a passenger encountered on board the ship were those of fresh varnish, paint, and freshly sawn wood. Back then, lead was still used in the manufacture of paint, and
  • 9. linseed oil was used in large quantities. On that fatal night, the delicious aromas of roasting duck, lamb, and beef, all of which were on the first class menu, would have been present in addition to the scent of smoke from the coal-powered engines. [12] The bluish hour, a fragrance described as "velvety delicate and romantic" by Guerlain, was just released in the same year. It is a scent of bluish dusk and anticipation of night, before the first stars show in the sky. [13] There would have been several women on the first class deck who would have scented it because it was pricey, in high demand, and expensive. There is no disputing that the scent is still available now and that it still evokes memories of that tragic evening. But on April 14, 1912, at 11 p.m., a new stench with a metallic edge started to emerge. It smelled like an iceberg. Icebergs will pick up the smell of their surroundings, just like ice in your freezer will pick up the diverse flavors of other things kept there. This is influenced by interactions between marine life and the chemical make-up of the water in which the iceberg is generated. The ship may not have been rescued, but there may have been more survivors if they had recognized the faintly metallic smell of ice. The iceberg that the Titanic allegedly collided with is shown; remnants of the ship's paint may be seen on it. CHECK OU MY INSTAGRAM FOR MORE OFFERS 3Ancient Egyptian Temples
  • 10. love anything about ancient Egypt. I could not get my hands on enough books about the ancient civilization when I was a teenager. I even made the decision to one day migrate to Egypt and revive the former Pharaonic kingdoms after teaching myself how to read simple hieroglyphics and learning the names of all the gods. Though my ambition to succeed the current King of Egypt was unsuccessful, I never lost my passion with the country. I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't been there yet. Given that frankincense and myrrh are the two major components of the most widely used church incense, if you have ever visited a Catholic church, you are definitely familiar with its aroma. Since the Ancient Egyptians utilized the same resins in their temples, you were probably greeted by the intense aroma of incense when you arrived. Additionally, the Egyptian churches were decorated with flowers, just like our own. Lotus blooms, reeds, and other marsh vegetation were the most prevalent. The lotus has a very fragrant, fruit-like aroma. Additionally, the dreary marsh plants would have added an undercurrent of water and mud while yet dominating with that sickening sweetness. Other fragrant flowers would have included jasmine, with its hypnotic indole-fecal perfume, sweet-smelling roses in bloom, and the strong scent of fresh mandrake, reminiscent of dried tobacco. [14] Food sacrifices to the gods' pantheon would likely be the next odor to emanate from the temple. Typically, this consisted of hot off the oven bread and roasted meats. You may now picture the temple having a fragrance reminiscent of Christmastime in a contemporary rural community. When provided during certain seasons of the year, milk, herbs, and vegetables would soon have given the meal a faintly sour, decaying smell. What possible combination of scents could be more perfect? All of life's foul components together in one location. A truly wonderful picture of life in Ancient Egypt can be created by adding the serious chanting of the priests, the distant noises of exotic creatures kept as pets, and the melodic instruments of street beggars. • 11. 2The Holocaust The Nazi regime abolished the Jewish Ghettos in 1942, and mass deportations by train were under way. Except for one bucket in the corner, which was obviously made useless very quickly, there were no rest stops for bathroom breaks and no facilities for the sick. Vomit, excrement, and urine stench pervaded the whole trip from city to camp. Both inside and outside of the trains, the worst manifestations of man's animal nature were on display. The scent was unrecognizable to anybody in the camps who had ever smelled it before, according to individuals who witnessed the incineration of victims. We only detect the aroma of seared flesh when meat is prepared for consumption. Not the case when a person gets burned. Burning human fat and beef-like aromas from burning flesh would have made up the majority of the nauseating odors that pervaded the camps on a regular basis. This would be followed by the foul smells of sulfur from burning hair and nails, a coppery metal stench from burning blood and iron-rich organs, and spinal fluid which burns with a sickening sweet musky smell resembling perfume. It has a strong aroma that is practically edible. [15] There was also the fallout. American GIs who were sent in to free the camps reported they could smell the odor before they ever noticed the inmates. For kilometers around, "the scent pervaded the entire countryside." Disease, including typhus, dysentery, and TB, was widespread, according to one Private. The crematory had been running continuously, and the smell of mounds of human waste and corpses was horrifying. • 12. 1Sanctity Saints emit an odor. Okay, some saints do. The odor of sanctity, also known as osmogenesia or odore di santità in Italian, is the antithesis of the sulfur-based odore di zolfo, or smell of death. There are many diverse manifestations of this odor of sanctity. While for some saints it is an afterlife smell that typically accompanies incorruptibility, for others it is a lovely aroma that they mysteriously release while they are still alive.Others experience it as sweet-smelling liquids dripping from the tomb containing the saint's mortal body. The life of St. Simeon Stylites (died 459 A.D.), who spent 37 years perched on a pillar with his flesh slowly decaying beneath the instruments of mortification he wore, is one of the most dramatic accounts of the aroma of holiness. According to legend, the saint sent out a perfume-like scent. Sadly, a rocket in Aleppo in 2016 damaged the pillar he was standing on. What therefore does the scent of holiness entail? With notes of honey, butter, roses, violets, frankincense, myrrh, pipe tobacco, jasmine, and lilies, it is generally described as sweet. [17] Additionally, there is a feeling that the fragrance is unnatural. St. Therese of Lisieux's incorrupt corpse, which is seen above, smelt of roses, lilies, and violets, while St. Polycarp's body, while burning at the stake, was believed to fill the air with the scent of incense in the second century. Additionally, a holy odor is reported to emanate from stigmata scars. CHECK OU MY INSTAGRAM FOR MORE OFFERS
