To provide a useful tool
| apt to scan scientific activities at national, regional,
municipal levels as well as to analyse single Institutions’
production
| complementary to scientific papers
| which can answer specific information needs
| with a great degree of updateness

These procedures deal with two different fields available in the database,
"Institution” and "CC categories". Data included in the first field is not full
standardized, so further analysis has to be performed depending on the
different levels of unit specifications which one may want to analyze.
wFirst of all by searching the number of publications in each discipline,
related e.g. to the Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences, by means of the code
"CC", one obtains an analytical list of more detailed research fields such as
"Earth Sciences", "Space", “Applied Physics, Materials" and so on, along with the
number of papers published in each of those specific fields.
wThen, by combining each set with a specific country code included in the field
"Institution”, one yields the number of papers related to that field
published in the desired country.
wBy making use of a database program which can parse, and then group, the
different levels of information units included in the "Institution" field, more detailed
lists can be arranged for
States - Regions - Provinces - Towns -Institutions- Authors
wDifficulties such as
non-standardized nomenclatures
for land subdivisions and authors' affiliations are also
addressed, which may be overcome in future as
authors become more aware of the importance of this
need for scientometric analyses.

These indicators and their trends are monitored to analyse
the impact of TRIL (Training Program in Italian
Laboratories) of Students from Developing Countries
This Program, which is sponsored by the International
Centre for Theoretical Physics, is confined to physics.
COMMENT:
Comparison of the figures for Physics and Applied Physics
in Fig.1, with the ones for the other disciplines, e.g.
Chemistry, puts into clear evidence the validity of the TRIL
program.

The number and fraction by scientific field of the
papers co-authored by scientists of Swedish and
Italian Institutions are supplied and updated on
request of the Scientific Attaché of the Italian
Embassy in Stockholm. The evolution in time of
these indicators is monitored and the participating
Institutions identified.
In Fig. 2 the yearly number of co-authored papers
in the disciplines of CC Editions: Physical, Chemical
& Earth Sc. / Engineering, Computing & Technology /
Agriculture, Biology & Environmental Sc./ Life Sc.

Indicators to localise the vocations for industrial
settlements
In Fig.3 the yearly number of publications disaggregated in the
specific disciplines of the CC Edition 'Agriculture, Biology &
Environmental Sciences' for the Region Emilia Romagna.
In Fig.4 the competition between the various Italian Regions for
the specific discipline "Food science and Nutrition" in the above
Edition. The Region Emilia Romagna falls in the front rank and
presents the best growth rate.
REMARKS
wThis method offers the possibility of achieving
comparable results as far as scientific research is
concerned, between different countries, their relationships,
the different research policies and achievements with a
high degree of updateness
wVery detailed Figures
up to the very single Institution
real time photography of scientific activity
CONCLUSIONS
Scientometric indicators to provide novel information for a
wide spectrum of problems can be obtained making use of
accessible and constantly updated bibliographic databases.
We report examples of the procedures set up to analyse:
üThe impact of training foreign students on the scientific
relations with the host country.
üThe scientific cooperation between different nations.
üVocation of an area for a specific industrial settlement.
Analysis based on a single indicator should be considered with
caution.
However these scientometric indicators are verifiable, not
subjective, homogeneous and consequently comparable, i.e.

INTRODUCTION
Procedures to provide omogeneous and easy to
update scientometric indicators, making use of
the bibliographic database Current Contents
(Institute for Scientific Information, Philadelphia,
USA), have been adopted by the Library of CNR
(National Research Council) located in Bologna
(Italy).
The Current Contents database is updated
every week and contains the papers published up
to the last three months in the core journals of
any given field.
