We are using a new way to sign up to volunteer at Bookfair this year called
“Sign Up Genius.” You should have already received an email inviting you to
volunteer to work at our 55th
Annual AAUW Bookfair at Perimeter Mall. If
you have already signed up, a confirmation email has also been sent to you.
The program will automatically send a reminder email to you three days be-
fore each shift for which you have volunteered.
If you have not already responded to the email invitation, this is a link that will
take you to our Sign Up Genius location www.SignUpGenius.com/
go/8050B4BACA72CA02-aauw1 You may also visit this site at any time and see when other members have
volunteered to work. Remember, Cobb and North Fulton members are also volunteering, so you may see
names that you do not recognize.
Sign Up Genius is a free program. It does have advertising accompanying it, which we hope no one has found
problematic. This volunteer sign up system has greatly simplified the work of our Bookfair Personnel Chair.
We hope that it will make the job much easier for future Bookfair managers. We have 28 shifts and have in-
vited more than 150 people to sign up. Some shifts typically have as few as 10 people working but other shifts
have more than 30, which ultimately means a lot of data entry, not to mention reminder emails, that the per-
sonnel chair must juggle. Sign Up Genius can revolutionize this process for us.
Boost the Atlanta Branch’s participation by working at Bookfair 2014. Remember: Funding of our Branch’s
philanthropy depends on how many hours we contribute. Do your part!
We begin our year discussing "The Luminaries" by Eleanor Catton on
Monday, September 8. We will be meeting for lunch at the home of
Elaine North at 11:30 am.

AAUW Atlanta Branch: President’s Message
Please mark your calendars for the annual Georgia
AAUW Board meeting on Saturday September 6,
2014 at the Country Inn and Suites, 4500 Circle
Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30339. Registration for the
Georgia board meeting begins promptly at 9:00 am
and continues until 9:30 am. Coffee will be available
in the hotel lobby for all attendees.
Major revisions of the current working policies and
procedures document will be an objective. In order
to save on printing costs, please bring your current
copy of WP and P which was handed out at our last
board meeting and again at the spring convention.
There will also be a targeted training program for
grassroots activism. We expect Char Singleton, the
state organizer for Georgia, Florida and Alabama to
attend. Other discussion topics include supporting
passage of the Family Care Act in Georgia, interest in
pay equity, human trafficking and voter education/
registration.
The AAUW Georgia Board meeting presentations
will include the 2013-14 Financial Report and Pro-
posed Budget for 2014-15, and updates on member-

Student Groups, State and branch contributions, the
communications efforts taking place on the website and
The Cherokee Rose. Discussions about the Spring Con-
vention and the Nominating Committee will also take
place.
All Atlanta Branch members were sent an email contain-
ing the registration form and details of the Georgia
AAUW Board meting. The registration form and fee are
due by September 3, 2014. If you have not received the
registration form and the information on how to register,
please email the Communications Intern at: publica-
tions@aauwatlanta.org.
Greetings to all members at the beginning of the 2014-2015 Branch year! I am excited to serve
as the President of the AAUW Atlanta Branch and to work with the Board and Branch mem-
bers. We had a very productive Board Meeting in July and made some plans for this year.
Thanks to everyone who made the trip to East Cobb.
This has been a great summer. Many of our members traveled to faraway places. Kay Collins
traveled to Africa, and Phyllis Miller spent several weeks in Paris and probably others whose
destinations we will learn about in the months ahead. I have spent four weeks in Hilton Head
with grandchildren. Not as exciting as Africa or Paris but very meaningful to be with family, es-
pecially grandchildren.
Over the summer Wendy Venet (VP for Programs), who is also on faculty at Georgia State University as a pro-
fessor of history, was approached by Georgia State University about the possibility of moving our Archives to
Georgia State. Wendy consulted with our previous Historian, Sarah Rondeau, and Sarah supports the move of
our Archives to Georgia State University. These discussions continue and options will be presented to the
Board. Continued>

Hotel room reservations for Friday September 5, 2014
are available for $79 plus tax for a king or double queen
bed. Please make reservations for a hotel room by
contacting Andrea Rangal by August 29, 2014. A full hot
breakfast is complementary for guests staying in the hotel
on Friday night; if you did not stay at the hotel, the cost is
$6.
AAUW Atlanta Branch: President’s Message (Continued)
The 2014-2015 Handbook is being printed and will be distributed at the September 14th
Membership Tea to
be held at Agnes Scott from 2 to 4 pm. Please check your handbook to see the other exciting programs that are
planned for this year. Thanks to Wendy Venet and Betty Arden (Hospitality Chair) for planning programs and
locations for the six meetings this year. Students attending the NCCWSL conference in June will present.
Please bring a friend or potential member. Thanks to Ruth Yurchuck, Terry Eshenour, Kay Collins and Sha-
ron Bevis-Hoover for their work on this year’s Handbook.
Also consider attending the AAUW of Georgia Board Meeting on September 6th
. All members are encouraged
to participate.
At our May meeting Mary Lynn Merkle and Ruth Yurchuck discussed the need to revisit Branch structure and
functions after changes were made about five years ago. For instance, the Nominating Committee struggled to
fill the positions for the coming year. We have many positions and not enough people willing to serve. As a
result, an ad hoc restructuring group agreed to begin discussion of potential changes. A survey form was devel-
oped and distributed with the help of our GSU Student Affiliate group. Results are being analyzed and find-
ings will be presented when the analysis is completed.
I am technically retired from GSU but I still work half-time teaching in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Pro-
gram and teach other courses. I am also President of 5th
District Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs, which
includes 8 clubs. Additionally I serve as a member of the Executive Board of the Atlanta Woman’s Club. Do
not let these things prevent you from contacting me if you have questions or concerns! My email is: presi-
dent@aauwatlanta.org and my cell is in the handbook.
Please remember to sign up to work as many shifts as possible for Bookfair September 21-28. You can access
the signup sheet from our website (aauwatlanta.org). Bookfair sales provide the funds to offer scholarships to
non-traditional women students and to contribute to AAUW Funds.

We had a very productive Board Meeting in July and made some plans for this year. Thanks to everyone who made the trip to East Cobb. This has been a great summer. Many of our members traveled to faraway places. Kay Collins traveled to Africa, and Phyllis Miller spent several weeks in Paris and probably others whose destinations we will learn about in the months ahead. I have spent four weeks in Hilton Head with grandchildren. Not as exciting as Africa or Paris but very meaningful to be with family, es- pecially grandchildren. Over the summer Wendy Venet (VP for Programs), who is also on faculty at Georgia State University as a pro- fessor of history, was approached by Georgia State University about the possibility of moving our Archives to Georgia State. Wendy consulted with our previous Historian, Sarah Rondeau, and Sarah supports the move of our Archives to Georgia State University. These discussions continue and options will be presented to the Board. • 4. AAUW Atlanta Branch: President’s Message (Continued) The 2014-2015 Handbook is being printed and will be distributed at the September 14th Membership Tea to be held at Agnes Scott from 2 to 4 pm. Please check your handbook to see the other exciting programs that are planned for this year. Thanks to Wendy Venet and Betty Arden (Hospitality Chair) for planning programs and locations for the six meetings this year. Students attending the NCCWSL conference in June will present. Please bring a friend or potential member. Thanks to Ruth Yurchuck, Terry Eshenour, Kay Collins and Sha- ron Bevis-Hoover for their work on this year’s Handbook. Also consider attending the AAUW of Georgia Board Meeting on September 6th . All members are encouraged to participate. At our May meeting Mary Lynn Merkle and Ruth Yurchuck discussed the need to revisit Branch structure and functions after changes were made about five years ago. For instance, the Nominating Committee struggled to fill the positions for the coming year. We have many positions and not enough people willing to serve. As a result, an ad hoc restructuring group agreed to begin discussion of potential changes. A survey form was devel- oped and distributed with the help of our GSU Student Affiliate group. Results are being analyzed and find- ings will be presented when the analysis is completed. I am technically retired from GSU but I still work half-time teaching in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Pro- gram and teach other courses. I am also President of 5th District Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs, which includes 8 clubs. Additionally I serve as a member of the Executive Board of the Atlanta Woman’s Club. Do not let these things prevent you from contacting me if you have questions or concerns! My email is: presi- dent@aauwatlanta.org and my cell is in the handbook. Please remember to sign up to work as many shifts as possible for Bookfair September 21-28. You can access the signup sheet from our website (aauwatlanta.org). Bookfair sales provide the funds to offer scholarships to non-traditional women students and to contribute to AAUW Funds.
