2. Sewing Materials for a Wool Felt Beret at Home
BERNINA 350 PE Machine
Lining: 1/2 yard of lining fabric
(I used Bemberg Rayon)
Fabric: 1/2 yard of Wool Felt
Coordinating Thread Scissors,
Rotary Cutter Ruler, or Tape
Measure
Pen or pencil on paper
Needle for hand stitching
3. Traditionally, berets are composed of wool felt. Wool felt was available in the
utility fabric area of my local fabric store. They have a huge assortment of
lovely colours. This project will only require around half a yard of fabric.
Remember that the cloth will lay against your brow and may be scratchy, and
that wool can be drying to your hair. This is why I lined my wool felt beret.
4. The design parts for your wool felt beret hat are
made as follows:
Your beret pattern will consist of two pieces: the
top and the underside of the hat. Each piece will
also include a quarter-inch seam allowance.
To make the pattern for the top of the beret,
which is basically a huge circle, start with a 12′′
diameter (the distance across a circle). This
figure was chosen since it is even and appears to
be the normal size of ready-to-wear adult size
berets, give or take a centimetre or two. Divide
12" in half to get 6" (the radius of the circle), and
this is the number you'll put on your compass.
5. We'll use the same circular from the top to make a pattern for the bottom. Tape
measure around your head – mine is 22 inches. The circumference of the inner circle
is determined by the distance around your head. The inner circle is the opening in the
beret through which your head will fit. Here's how to figure out the radius of a circle:
6. The radius is 3.5 inches. This is where
you'll place your compass to form your
inner circle.
7. Simply cut off the inner circle and use it to make both the top and
bottom of the beret.
8. Make one beret top from fabric
and one from lining. Make one
underside of the beret out of
fabric and one out of lining.
9. Fold the top of the beret in half, wrong sides together.
10. Then fold it in half again. Make a mark at
the point with a pen or pencil. This is the
centre of the wool felt beret's top.
Overlap the ends of the stem piece.
11. Overlap the ends of the stem piece.
Stitch the stem to the centre of the
beret's top.
16. Reduce the inner circle by .25″, so
that when it’s sewn to the wool
felt beret it will give you a “turn of
cloth” and the lining will not peek
out.
17. Pin the lining to the wool felt
beret, right sides together,
leaving a 3′′-4′′ opening. Sew
with a.25′′ seam allowance.
18. Turn to the right side.
Slip stitch the opening closed
with a needle and thread.
