RE: SHERMAN HAN ZHIWEN
I am writing this personal recommendation at the request of Mr SHERMAN HAN ZHIWEN in
my capacity as his tutor, mentor and projects supervisor.
I am happy to note that I have personally observed how Sherman has matured and
transformed from an eager and enthusiastic freshman into a competent and confident graduate
of the EEE Class of 2015. From being a casual tutor who answered his queries on basic
electronics, I later became his supervisor in DIP (Design and Innovation Project), a practical
component taken by all 3rd
year students. This was where I observed his raw talent and ability
which I will elaborate below. I was also his Final Year Project supervisor.
I initiated and started this field call UAVionics. Essentially it is a field of engineering which
focuses on the technical understanding and practical hands-on pertaining to the electronics of
unmanned autonomous vehicles. UAVionics has been very popular with students and
Sherman was one of students in the pioneer batch of my experimental initiative. As expected,
he did extremely well in the project. He led the project team that came in first, coming up
with the design of an unconventional UAV structure that was the most creative and innovative.
I should note that the projects were evaluated and judged by external parties, meaning
practicing professionals in the field. Although not having any prior experience or background
in UAVionics, it was clear that Sherman just has the knack to pick up things on his own. He
has a natural flair for tinkering with hardware, with skill to design and put together stuff with
his own hands.
Sherman’s enthusiasm and achievements in the DIP impressed me a lot. I subsequently
appointed him as my Teaching Assistant, helping me in guiding the subsequent batch of DIP
students. I also got him involved in many outreach activities, showcasing the work on
UAVionics. He proved himself to be an effective communicator, able to explain technical
concepts to other students and visitors in a very layman, down-to-earth manner. He did a
tremendous job. The School for sure appreciated his effort and commitment. This was
evident from the many outreach and publicity events that he was asked to support.
I was also the supervisor of Sherman’s final year project (FYP) which he did very well. His
FYP work was submitted to compete in the SAFMC-2015, organized by DSO. His project
won 3 awards, the most notable being the Silver Championship Award, coming in second
overall. I am especially proud of the fact that the level of achievement is especially
significant considering that Sherman’s entry was based on his FYP, as compared to many
entries in the competition backed by bigger research and project teams with better resources.
Sherman has a very easy-going personality and got along well with others in the lab. Students
from Secondary schools who attended workshops conducted by Sherman described him as

2. friendly, approachable and patient. I am so happy that he has discovered his passion during
his years of undergraduate study. To me, he is like a soaring eagle which having identified its
prey, will focus and zoom in on its prey. Such attributes which include commitment,
determination and perseverance are commendable. Needless to say, he will be a valuable asset
to any organization that can harness his many untapped strengths and energy. I strongly
recommend him without any reservations. Please do feel free to contact me if you need any
further clarifications beyond what I can convey in this short recommendation letter.
Sincerely,
