June 201512
Dear Reader,
The very essence of travel is adventure and
exploration. Moving out of your comfort zone,
you explore a new place, people and culture
leaving your personal perspectives at home. Our
travel issue gives a nod to the adventurer in all of
you and its packed to bursting with adventure!
How hair is worn in any community or
country is best representative of its culture, beliefs
and philosophy. As an avid traveller, my favourite
moments are when I come into contact with the
local beauty and hairdressing traditions and learn
their background and significance. Our cover
story, ‘Glocal Hair Affairs’ will take you on a whirlwind tour of traditional hairstyles
seen across the globe, from the demure Geisha ‘mage’ to the Chickasaw bun, the
spread will leave you amazed. And for those who seek quirky surprises our ‘Hair and
There’ story is all about bizarre hair festivals that communities partake in around the
world. In a similar vein we have analysed popular culture and cinema in terms of its
hair symbolisms in Hollywood movies, how they represent the journeys of the
characters through styles. Legendary beauty expert Shahnaz Husain has shared a
power-packed feature on travel hair care that will empower you to put your best
mane forward.
And our Beauty cover story, ‘The Ultimate Beauty Checklist’ will be your
dictionary when it comes to planning your beauty needs during your travel. Dr.
Varun Katyal shares his own skin care expertise for your travel skin care needs in
‘Glow on the go’. Adding a quirky touch to beauty, our ‘Bizarre Indulgences’ story
could be your ready reckoner for the extreme spa experiences out there that you
could plan your next vacation around. ‘Diary of a Jetsetter’ is our nod to those of
you who put your best face forward even as you straddle time zones and jet lag, and
for the envious one a how-to guide to do so. In case you are homebound, we have a
feature on detoxification techniques that are easy to emulate.
For the men, we have a ‘Travel Essentials’ feature that you can trust to take care
of all your unique travel needs. And for the aspiring hairstylist, an interview with
Ralf Boss—TIGI’s Creative Director for Asia South Pacific.
For our loyal fans we have taken HAIR to digital platforms so make sure you
follow us Twitter @HAIRMagIndia and on Facebook: Hair and Beauty Magazine,
for round the clock updates!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The hilarious ‘Babbling Beards’ article just made
my day. I have been sporting a different styles
every week just out of curiosity. It has evidently
made a massive difference; I’ve noticed the
changing perspectives of the women I meet.
So it is true; I just have to figure out a style that
appeals to most of them!

MARSALA STAIRS
The colour of the year deserves
its own dedicated style and this
geometrical piece of art is not for
the faint-hearted! The cascading
hair with abrupt yet sculpted layers
will add a note of Renaissance
modernism to any personality
irrespective of clothing or occasion.
Straightened or crimped, hair is
elevated to a statement rather than
an afterthought and the colour
takes the ‘Sculpt’ philosophy to a
new stratosphere!
DOUBLE HAT CHIGNON
The chignon has travelled
a long way from ancient
Greece where it first added
glamour to Athenian women.
Traditionally, the chignon was
a smallish bun at the nape of
the neck. Lakmé salon has
created its own dramatic
version of this classic low-key
style, inspired by the double
domes commonly seen in
Barcelona. Voluminous hair
sleekly styled in an up-do
that resembles a faux hat,
this style adds oodles of
oomph when needed. With a
sculpted saree gown, this can
even take you back to ancient
times as you make a queenly
entrance at soirees!

Babbling
Beards
I
t’s quite a daunting task to weigh the intensely
contradicting preferences in choosing what
style of beard to sport. Considering the options,
it’s a shame to not have experimented with the
second most masculine thing you have to offer.
Although, the only king in the deck of cards without
any facial hair is of Hearts, it shouldn’t convince you
otherwise. You could probably give it a shot to get
your fist bumped by your men and swooned over
by your women. This is the perfect season for you
as summer speeds up the growing process and
also protects you from tanning, making it easier
for you to achieve the ultimate symbol of strength,
manliness, self-esteem and status.
A man with a beard has an immediate,
visceral impact. POOJA RAISINGHANI
sheds some light on the general
perceptions for you to choose your
look this summer!
You’re sure to dominate her
entire existence and she’ll be
more than happy to jump
onto this ride.
male grooming
“Hey, I’m actually a really nice
guy. Let’s cuddle! No? Okay then,
brace yourself for some poetry. “
“Feel my masculinity
from afar. Mess with
me and I’ll have my men
take care of you. “
“Well, I have better things
to do in life. I could add
you to that list.”
STUBBLE
The rugged stubble can be misleading
in several fun ways. It speaks volume
about a man who cares to keep up
with the current trends. Contrary to
popular belief, the reckless look is
extremely high maintenance for it
requires timely grooming and styling
sessions. But, you’ll be out there
making them wonder what you’ve
been up to. You were probably busy
cracking that major deal or practicing
for the soccer finals. Lightly scratch
your beard when you spot them
looking at you as though in deep
thought, that’ll do the trick.
SOUL PATCH+GOATEE
Having gotten bullied your entire teenage
life, these patches of hair finally shoved
those disturbing encounters in a dark alley,
right where they belong. If only you could
keep that desperate adolescent version of
you from making every situation awkward.
An annoying know-it-all who’ll criticise the
wine till its last drop to a mushy sitcom dude
who believes in romanticizing everything;
basically anything that increases the
probability of getting in her pants will sum
up a man who ‘chooses’ to sport this look.
CHIN STRAP BEARD
You live in the gym, juggling your
women while grooving to the beats
of EDM. Then subtly flex your biceps
to exhibit your abstract tattoo for
some more attention; attention
which you totally deserve. Do they
have any idea how long it takes
you to shape that perfect strap?
You’re sure to dominate her entire
existence and she’ll be more than
happy to jump onto this ride.

MADE OVER
I just happened to skim through the pages
of at a salon and it took care of my
entertainment completely. I ended up getting
one of the styles featured in the magazine. I’ve
now subscribed to , so I guess I’ll be getting
a new look every month. The best part is that
you give so many tips that I have modified
most of my hair and skin care rituals. I thank
you for a whole new me!

Matching your outfit to a fabulous ’do is a cinch with our easy how-
to guide. Here are some fabulous styles you can achieve yourself at
home, matched with the neckline you’re rocking.
Halter neck High neck
Do it yourself!
• Begin creating this look with hair that was washed
and dried smooth the day before for the best
results. Section your fringe and clip this away to
one side.
• Spritz the remaining hair with a heat protector and
secure it into a side ponytail.
• Tong hair from the ponytail on a small barrel
curling iron in small sections.
• Split the hair into two sections and start pinning it
loosely to the head with grips.
• Blow-dry the fringe area smooth and set into
a loose fingerwave before adding your hair
accessories and setting with hairspray. Bare
shoulders enhance the detail at the back of this
updo, and having the hair set slightly on the
side gives this look a great focal point while
complementing a halterneck gown.

• Prepare your hair by applying a heat
protecting serum to dry hair before
turning your head upside down and
blasting your hair up and towards
your crown.
• Brush all your hair towards your
crown and secure with a rubberband
in a high ponytail.
• Take a section of hair from the
ponytail near your scalp and wrap it
around the rubberband to hide the
band and fix it with a grip.
• Gently backcomb the ponytail and
spray with dry shampoo.
• Finally spray all over with hairspray to
control any flyaways.

• You’ll need a few hair rollers
(size dependent on how
long your hair is—if you
have longer hair you’ll
need wider rollers and lots
of hair pins).
• Prep your towel-dried hair
using volumising mousse
to give your hair some
volume and height.
Then, once your hair is
dry, place one of your
rollers at the nape of your
neck and wrap a section of hair around it before
pinning into place.
• Continue doing this, working your way outwards
towards your ears until all the hair is pinned into
place. Finish off with a generous spritzing of
hairspray to keep your vintage roll in place. If you
want to create a more modern look, take on the
vintage roll, pull out the front sections of your hair
that fall around your face and tong them to create
an even more romantic look.

• You must have very long hair or extensions for this
style. Simply create a loose fishtail plait, then wrap
it around the head, securing into place with grips.
• Once the plait has been created, pull it out a little,
then pin into place, leaving out some soft tendrils of
hair to give you a soft, wispy finish.
• Finish with a texturising spray to give texture and a
soft hold.
– Natasha Pearson at Pearson Clark Hairdressing, Essex
Do it yourself!
• Wash and blow-dry your hair, then
section your hair like a cross on the
top of a hot cross bun (creating
a centre parting, then another
sectioning across the top of your
head from ear to ear).
• Starting from the nape, take a three-
inch section then wrap the hair
around a wand, starting at the wider
end. Do not curl the hair right from
the root. Hold each section for 10
seconds, making sure the curls are
all curled the same way.
• After the whole head is complete, let
the curls cool down for two minutes,
then take a soft bristle brush and
brush the curls out gently. Sweep

Biolage 6-in-1 Deep Smoothing Serum from MATRIX
is your best bet against frizz.
By Shefali Samdria
A monsoon magic trick
for smooth hair!
T
he summer heat has everyone
frazzled and begging for the
monsoon. Those cool showers
soothe the heat but bring oodles
of humidity to the atmosphere.
Unfortunately, frizz and humidity are
best friends!
The rainy season brings maximum
humidity which is disastrous for your
hair. No matter how well you style
your hair or use styling products, it
can undo the style within minutes.
And what’s worse, this is a permanent
feature of the monsoon months which
means sticky and/or frizzy hair every
day no matter if you shampoo or
blow-dry every day.
In 2005, Matrix India introduced their
iconic Biolage 6-in-1 Deep Smoothing
Serum which is India’s 1st Professional
6-in-1 Serum that offers six benefits
in one product. The serum, which is
a favourite with women across India,
has been voted by 25,000
consumers as the Best
Anti-Frizz Serum in India at
the Femina Beauty Awards
in 2015. It is enriched
with a fusion of avocado,
grape-seed oils and frizz
taming polymers and works
wonders on your mane
during the monsoon.
What is humidity and how
is it related to frizz?
Humidity is the amount of water
vapour in the air. When exposed to
high humidity levels, hair absorbs
too much water from the air, causing
the cuticle to swell, become tough,
thereby creating frizz. Therefore
more humidity = more frizz.

Best Anti-Frizz
Serum in India at
the Femina Beauty
Awards in 2015.

Benefits of Avocado
Avocados are an excellent hair
conditioner. This fruit makes the hair
shiny and beautiful. Also, it not only
nourishes and strengthens the hair, but
also saves hair from split ends.
The versatile formula
gently envelops hair to
seal in smoothness and
lock-out frizz even in
97% humidity without
ever getting sticky or
weighing hair down.
In the past one year, women across India have fallen for this
mane magician. One of them is popular online beauty blogger,
Shanaya Sinner!
LITTLE MISS SINNER
says, “I never used to apply
serum but recently due to the
harsh weather, tons of traveling
and junk food my hair was a
mess, I had very dry brittle
and frizzy hair. I have been
using this serum on my hair
for 2 weeks straight and I have
notice an instant difference.
This product will last you a
long time as you need only a
pea size for your hair (medium
length). The formula is light
weight; it instantly adds shine
and gets rid of frizz. I can really
say this entire range does what
it claims and would definitely
suggest you to try it.”
DOLON of Pout Pretty beauty
blog says, “The Matrix Biolage Deep
Smoothing Serum is one of the best
affordable serums in the market and
you can get it at professional salons. It is
priced at Rs. 275 for 100ml and can be a
good choice if you are looking to tame
dry and unmanageable hair.”

going. From Bangalore Open Air to Supersonic Arcades,
there’s a festival to cater to every music genre. If you’re
planning to attend one such fest yourself, we’re sure
you would want to look amazing and make a statement
without having to fuss about your appearance too
much. To help you with this, TIGI educator Rohit Solanki

CREATIVE TIP:
Use fingers to spike up
your hair.
You don’t need to have dreadlocks
to show your love for music. All
you could do is sport a punk and
let that be your definitive style at
the music concert.
For this, cleanse your hair

the B For Men Pure Texture
Molding Paste to dampen hair and
blow them dry while twisting small
tufts of hair with your fingers.
Once dry, take some Bed Head

apply it to your hair by making
circular movements to create a

If you have a short crop or a bob, TIGI
recommends that you sport a tousled
hairdo that’s easy to maintain while
you are busy head-banging at music

Pamper your hair colour with Bed

After washing, prep it with Totally
Baked Volumizing and Prepping Hair
Meringue on your damp hair and blast
dry while using a paddle brush to give
your hair the desired direction. Use a
flat iron on the fringe and the ends of
your hair for perfection. Finish your
look by spraying Foxy Curls Hi-Def
Curl Spray while cool drying your hair
to perfect the tousled look.
CREATIVE TIP:
The tousled look can be best
achieved by running your
fingers through your hair to
finish the look.
Boost your energy levels with this
electric grunge hair look. For those with
shoulder length hair, this hairstyle is not
just trendy but also speaks volumes
about your love for experimentation!
Scrunch your wet hair with the Bed
Head Manipulator, a funky fibre-
forming, texturising cream to add
the required hold. Use your fingers
while blow-drying your hair to give it
a specific direction. Separate your hair
into sections and use tongs to curl
each section from the roots to the
ends. Open out the curls with your
fingers, sweep a major section of your
hair to one side and create an undone
side part.
CREATIVE TIP:
To add more texture, apply a
cocktail of Bed Head Manipulator
and Bed Head Masterpiece
Hairspray to dry hair.

I
n this sweltering summer heat, the idea of styling
and maintaining long hair seems like a daunting
task, doesn’t it? But this doesn’t have to translate to

‘Pink-The Easy Collection’, System Professional’s Style
Global Ambassador Patrick Cameron showed us that you
do not need to lose your length to manage your locks this
season! This world-renowned hairdresser’s vision, talent
and enthusiasm for his craft have received tremendous
appreciation at multiple international hair shows that
he has conducted world over. His presentations are
often electric and theatrical, complete with music and
dance performances, making the
experience not only educational but also
entertaining. Acknowledged as a long
hair expert, he devised the collection
to showcase step-by-step looks and
demonstrations to the hairdressers that
struggle with styling long hair.
This session was conducted at the Wella
International Studio in Delhi; it combined
training and workshops for global hair
trends, stressing on techniques, creativity
and image. The event was led by Patrick

and voluminous updos for the season.
He offered training sessions to the
stylists about the current trends
followed by a ‘look and learn’ show.
While at this event, we caught up
with Patrick Cameron for a quick chat
about all things hair. Here’s what he
had to say:
Tell us how you ventured into
the profession of hairdressing
and something about your
training.
I was a late starter. I didn’t always
want to be a hairdresser; although,
hairdressing was something I had
always been interested in. When I
left school, music and art were my
passions and I was working as a
graphic artist when I happened to pass
a hairdressing salon in my hometown.
I worked with Lyndsay Loveridge, who
trained and mentored me.
Can you throw some light on your
love for dressing long hair?
Most of my female clients had long
hair during my training and wanted to
keep it that way. I was never happy just
trimming and blow-drying. I always
wanted to keep them simple and
elegant and used to dress the hair up
whenever I got the chance. This was
something I found I could really excel in.
Where do you draw your
inspiration from when it comes to
creating new hairstyles?
I get my inspiration from a variety of

it–be great at it. Also,

you come across.”
different sources. I am lucky enough to
have travelled the world and I continue
to do so with my work, so inspiration
can come from anything that I come
across. I also love movies and magazines;
sometimes I simply pick up an idea from
the streets of London where I live.
Tell us something about Pink-The
Easy Collection. How did your idea
come into being?
The Pink collection is put together to
show hairdressers how easy it is to
style long hair. That is why I created 20
easy step-by-step looks to show the
hairdressers how to really work with
long hair and how to get the hair to look
modern. This collection is dedicated more
to hairdressers and stylists than to the
customers. I believe that the more that
you share your ideas with other people,
the more room there is for creativity. I
observe hairdressers all over the world. I
am a big movie lover and take some ideas
from the movies and magazines that I
come across. Through this collection, I
want to help the aspiring stylists who face
difficulties in dressing and creating looks
for long hair.
What goes into creating a new
collection such as yours? Do tell us
something about the process?
I think of myself as a hairdresser’s
hairdresser. I love training, doing shows,
seminars, photo shoots and TV work. For
creating new styles and looks, it requires
extensive research, immense patience
and perseverance. I draw inspirations
from whatever happens around me and
always want to come up with something
really simple and easy.
How important is education and
training when it comes to the
profession of hairdressing?
I think it is really important for people
in our profession to constantly work on
things and keep themselves updated
with the new trends coming up every
now and then.
Describe your hairdressing
philosophy in one line.
Keep it simple!
Do share a piece of advice for
budding hairstylists.
I think my advice to anyone would be
to find something they are good at
i.e. coloring, cutting or even long hair
and excel in that particular aspect.
Don’t just be good at it–be great at it.
Also, keep learning from whatever and
whoever you come across. Absorbing
from the environment and keeping
abreast with new fashion trends and
techniques are keys to success in
this industry.
Do share some quick
hairstyling tips that
you swear by with
our readers.
Adding softness and texture to
the hair is the best way of styling
long hair. To the hairstylists, my
advice would be to know your
craft from all angles. Learning
constantly and innovating styling
techniques is what is required to
be an expert. Since most Indian
women have long and wavy
hair, using different products like
System Professional Luxe Oil
works brilliantly with wavy hair;
it acts as a great protectant and
helps in styling the hair. System
Profession-al Keratin Boost is
also an amazing product as it
puts conditioning agents into
the hair. It is a synthetic molecule
that boosts the protein into the
hair that helps protect the hair
from heat and humidity.

We love ‘Award Season’ at HQ and this year there have been

Don’t get us wrong, we like the whole grungy, tousled look
Rita sports most of the time. But when she keeps things
super-simple and sophisticated, we love it! This fuss-free look
perfectly complements Rita’s simple winged liner and fierce
eye contouring.
Recreate it:
TIP! This look will sit better on
second day tresses, as freshly-
washed hair has the tendency to
be fluffy. If you must wash your
hair, then pop on a smoothing
balm to keep frizz at bay.
The faux-lob can have the tendency to look
slightly poufy if not executed properly, but
Allison rocks this style to a tee. The deep side-
parting and slicked back look gives the style a
real old-Hollywood vibe.
Recreate it:
TIP! Ensure you curl your hair away from your
face to achieve the same style as Allison’s.
Start all the curls at ear-level, bar the large
front section, which should be started from
eye-level.

I
was travelling across rural Thailand when I saw a woman in a
traditional Thai dress ‘Pha nung’, her hair styled elaborately in
a doughnut shaped bun with a single wooden pin and I was
floored. I approached her and learnt how this way of wearing
hair was a tradition to be followed on days important to her faith
and culture. I realised that as much as clothing, hairstyles across the
cultures are representative of their philosophy, lifestyle and concepts
of beauty.
History
The oldest known record of hairstyling is from 30,000 years ago.
In ancient civilizations, women’s hair was often elaborately and
carefully dressed in special ways, Roman women wore their hair
in complicated styles and wore them as long as possible until the
Middle Ages. During the Roman age as well as in the 16th century
in the western world, women began to wear their hair in extremely
ornate styles and hairstyles slowly started reflecting popular cultural
movements and philosophies that continue even today. We present
modern renditions of hairstyles from around the globe!

India
Our country is famed for its dark
haired beauties and reams have
been dedicated to the elaborate,
exotic hair routines of our
queens as opposed to Western
counterparts. A quick glance at
relics from Mohen-jo-Daro to
Ajanta reveal that our ancestors
favoured long locks styled in
braids and ponytails, embellished
with tons of gold ornaments.
This is one tradition that ceases
to go out of style. You will see
it at weddings and religious
festivals, outsmarting the buns
and coiffures. Women these days
even opt for extensions or faux
braids to add that sashaying
oomph factor. Add a dash of
contemporary accessories to
elevate the look to perfection!

the person’s roots. Communities sport unique
hairstyles collectively to make a statement
about their identity and impart a sense of belongingness.
And then there are fun initiatives that intend to bind the
unique ones. Here are amazing ideas for your next trip;
we’ve made sure you get to toss your hair way too much!
Get red, go!
Jostling around in a sea of ginger heads to celebrate
togetherness is a new addition in the holiday calendars of
the red heads. It started off as an advertisement seeking
out models for elaborate paintings, which received a
whopping response of 150 redhead women competing
just for 15 positions. Today, it has snowballed into a grand
celebration for those blessed with a red mane and also for
those who admire them. The response to this gathering
has been phenomenal; the sheer enthusiasm and
participation from around 80 countries speaks for itself.
Redhaired children even get a week off from school so as
to let them enjoy the event as they paint the city of Breda,
Netherlands completely red. Now you have yet another
reason to colour those tresses!
Freeze‘em up!
The Takhini Hot Springs, a natural hot spring in Canada
hosts a rather unique competition—hair freezing
contest. How, you ask? Well, just jump into the forever
warm spring in the nipping temperature outside. Now
comes the task, make sure your hair freezes in the
funkiest shape possible to win you some dough. The
entries so far have been so wacky that they went viral
all over the internet. Would you like to give this bizarre
tradition a shot?

You’d be surprised
when you question
your own ways
while having the
time of your life.
The power of the mind and mane could never be weighed. POOJA RAISINGHANI
brings to you some random hair adventures from around the globe that you can
explore on your next holiday.
Get those
dreaded
locks!
Although they hate to
call themselves that, the
Rastafarians are one of the
coolest communities, mainly
because they’re associated
with hippies. Renouncing
all the worldly possessions,
including something as basic
as a comb, is quite something,
isn’t it? This gave them their
unique hair texture, intended
to intimidate, the dreadlocks
have inspired many other
communities who have picked
up bits and parts of their rich
culture. But we’d like you get
their extreme hairdo while you
set on soul searching journeys,
would you dare to go for it?
Leave ‘em
hanging!
You’d swiftly chop off your
mane to get some fame. We
have just the right reason for
you—a hair museum. Yes, you
read that right, this exits. Started
off as a memento given to a
friend, who simply hung it on
his wall, has now covered the
entire cave by women who wish
to be a part of the collection.
You’re expected to stick a cute
little note along with it as well.
Not just that, ten lucky strands
are picked and awarded with
a week long pottery workshop
and accommodation in
Cappadocia, Turkey. Strange
yet fun, now that’s a perfect
vacation plan.
Are you weirded out already? It’s
funny how we seem crazy to one
another but getting out there
and being a part of the madness
will surely help you gain some
perspective. You’d be surprised
when you question your own ways

You knew you wanted to be a
hairdresser at 13. How did you
reach this decision at such a
tender age?
My parents always accompanied
me to get my haircut, but one fine
day I decided to go by myself for
it. I chose a new hair salon and
while I was getting my hair cut, I
looked around and just loved the
atmosphere. At that moment I
decided that this will be my job.
Even my parents respected my
decision and four years later, I
finally started my hairdressing and
hairstyling career.

expert talk
Please share your education
background and early days of
pursuing your passion for
hairdressing.
I was blessed with my parents’
support. I started with learning the
basics from a hairdressing school in
Germany for the first six months; post
which, I started working in a salon.
But, to find the ideal one, I had to
switch three salons in just two years. I
got the best exposure with the salon
where the owner took me to London
for Vidal Sassoon and Toni&Guy
seminars twice a year. Apart from this,
I trained myself a lot to bring out the
best in me.
Coming to your first salon
‘Cosmic Stylers’, what was your
core philosophy and vision for
this venture?
The salon design that I created was
very special for me, the concept
being, ‘Hairdresser Aliens Landed
on Earth and Opened a Salon’. I
designed the interiors to look like a
UFO; the walls were painted silver,
the reception was carved round and
had egg shaped mirrors. I didn’t just
conceptualize the salon but also
helped in its building by charting
the interior design blueprint. With
loud music and super cool stylists, it
became the trendiest salon in town.
Every hairdresser dreams of his
own salon but few realize the
challenges and early struggles;
Could you please share your
own experiences?
Charting out a solid business plan
came naturally to me, thanks to my
father who, being a banker, was very
good with numbers. I clearly knew
how many customers and how much
I would need to charge per day to
cover all my costs. I had learned a lot
in these 15 years.
Slowly but surely, you gained a
profile as a mentor and Art
director for TIGI Germany. How
did that come about?
I started to work very early to
promote and help TIGI’s growth in
Germany and my salon acted like a
showcase for TIGI as a brand. For the
four years that I was the Ambassador
for TIGI, I was one of their ‘New Wild
Generation Guys’ and after that I
became an Art Director at TIGI. Now,
I train the next generation with the
same enthusiasm as I witnessed
during my training.
You worked and taught
extensively in China. What were
the unique challenges and
learnings of working in such a
different culture and industry?
I didn’t feel any difference in the
industry and the culture was
more shocking for me than the
environment. It took six months for
me to understand the behaviour
and psyche. After the initial hitches, I
successfully conducted around 300
seminars in around 30 cities in China. I
must say, China has taught me a lot.
Since then, you have taken up
the mantle for TIGI in Taiwan
and Asia South Pacific. Our
readers would love to hear the
highlights of such a prolific
journey!
To lead the Taiwan Academy was
already my dream from the time
I lived in Shanghai. The people in
Taiwan reminded me of Europe, they
are nice, educated and friendly. I also
married a Japanese woman and have
three kids; this place makes me feel
homely. Coming back to the question,
it is not an easy job to keep the
Academy busy. It takes a lot of time
to get enough students to keep the
academy working. We need around
1,000 paid admissions per year to
make it work perfectly.
Please share your advice to
young and aspiring hairstylists.
The best advice that I could give
to the young hairstylist is that they
should follow their heart, keep the
passion alive and train themselves
to overcome their weaknesses. This
way, one can get the best out of their
potential. After all, hairdressing is the
best job on earth!
June 2015 51
Cut, colour and style—which of
these did you aspire to excel in
intitially?
To become a hairstylist in Germany,
you start with cleaning and assisting,
as is the case everywhere else.
After that, you learn basic colouring
(global applications), perming and
highlighting, post which they finally
teach you to cut. Ideally, the first step
of learning/assisting takes three years
where you are schooled and then you
practice at a salon—it’s called the dual
system of learning. I always believed
that changing a person’s look with a
haircut is more fun but the haircut
will only work when complemented
with beautiful colour.

hair care
is a good option. If you’re someone with long hair,
take a headband and hair clips to keep your hair tidy.
Remember to take a scarf along to protect your hair
from exposure to the sun, wind and dust. You will need
it especially if you are out motoring, boating, trekking or
just strolling.
There are things that you must remember to pack to
protect your hair and also keep it looking good. Whether
it’s a beach destination or a hill station, carry a hair cream
or serum that contains sunscreen. Actually, the effects
of sun-exposure are much more near reflective surfaces,
like water and snow. You also need to take a mild herbal
shampoo, oil and conditioner. A small hairdryer would
be very useful in both destinations. You can take along
herbal hair mascara for temporary streaks to add that
touch of glamour when you dine out; the effect lasts till
the next shampoo. You may carry rollers or a heating rod
to style the hair yourself if you want to go all out.
T
ravel adds a wonderful dimension to
one’s life. It is not only refreshing and
rejuvenating but also a great learning
experience. You may be travelling for
work or may be on vacation, you may
have a hectic schedule or a relaxed one,
the fact remains that you are away from
home at the time and means to care for yourself and
make yourself attractive are not easily available. So,
here are some tips to limit your grooming needs, yet
make you look attractive and feel comfortable!
Travelling light has its advantages, so you need items
that are compact and portable. Get yourself a spacious
shoulder bag and two small, plastic-lined cases for your
toiletries and make-up. Your beauty aids should be
within easy reach. Before setting out on your journey,
have your hairstyling done, including a colouring job.
A short hairdo that can be brushed and set easily
AllImages©shutterstock.com
June 201554
If you are holidaying in the mountains
and the weather is cold and dry, the
hair may lack moisture. Apply oil,
leaving it on overnight and use a mild
herbal shampoo in the morning. After
shampooing, don’t forget to use a
creamy conditioner, massaging it
lightly into your hair, focussing on the
ends of your hair.
You can arrange for natural
ingredients for hair care very easily
when you are travelling. Among
these are tea bags, lemons, beer,
etc. For dry hair, use a beer rinse.
After you shampoo, pour the juice
of a lemon to beer all over your hair.
Leave on for five minutes and rinse
off with plain water. For oily hair,
lemon juice can be used for the
last rinse.
A few quick fixes or emergency
treatments for the hair can really be
useful while travelling, especially if
you have a hectic schedule. When
you have no time to shampoo, put a
little Eau De Cologne on your brush
and brush your hair. Cologne absorbs
oil and leaves your hair cleaner and
fragrant. In warm and humid weather,
add the juice of a lemon and half
a cup of rose water to a mug of
water and use it as a last rinse. If
you suddenly find that your hair has
too much static i.e. a ‘fly away’ hair
problem, just run damp hands all over
your hair and avoid brushing them
too much.
Travelling across time zones at
high speed means dealing with
jet lag, dry skin and frizzy hair. Eat
light meals during the flight. Salads
and fruits should help ward off
symptoms of jet-lag. Water and fruit
juices will help in preventing loss of
body fluids. If it’s a long flight, take
a walk down the aisle every two or
three hours. Lastly, relax and don’t
forget to enjoy your journey!
For the beach, a swimming cap
would help to protect the hair from
the sun. Since sea water makes the
hair rough and dry, don’t forget
to apply a leave-in conditioner
or serum. Take a small pea-sized
amount of it, smear on both palms
and glide them over the hair.
Alternately, massage it lightly into
the hair before you set your hair in
the desired style. Wash the hair with
less shampoo and apply conditioner
or hair serum again for protection.
In a warm and humid climate,
the hair may need to be washed
frequently. Simply rinse your
hair instead of using a creamy
conditioner. You can even make your
own hair rinsing mixture in the hotel
room. For this, add a tea bag to four
to five cups of warm water. Remove
the tea bag and cool the water. Then
add the juice of a lemon and use it
as a last rinse. This helps to make the
hair silky and shiny.

Styling the st rs:
We talk to three super stylists behind the A-listers’ amazing locks
and find out what their jobs entail.
FeatureEmilyLouiseOveryMainimageistock
Angelo Vallillo
Who have you styled recently?
A few examples are Douglas Booth and
Gracie Carvalho for DRAMA magazine,
David Gandy for GQ magazine and
Leslie Mann at this year’s Oscars.
How is the relationship generally
between celebrity and stylist when
you’re given the task of styling an A-lister for a big event?
It’s crucial to research a bit about the individual before you
turn up to the shoot or hotel room. You need to have an idea
in advance about what looks good on them and to have
some images in your mind about what will suit them. I find it
best to work with the client’s expectations, but always give
them something they haven’t had before. It doesn’t need to
be a massive change, just as long as you leave your stamp
on it.
How soon after your booking do you start planning a
star’s look?
I like to start planning as soon as I’m booked up. I’ll
research the celebrity online and then talk to them and the
photographer or publicist about what their expectations are
so I’m on their wavelength. That way I’m well prepared, and
I’ve been able to find my inspiration from them and the latest
catwalks and magazines.
Richard Ward
Who have been the most memorable
celebrities you’ve styled in
your career?
There have been so many… my team
and I have been involved with lots
of different high profile events–from
the Brits and MTV Awards, to royal
weddings and many international
fashion shows.
When styling, do you go with the star’s preferences, or do
they just trust your vision?
The relationship between celebrity and stylist is very much
based on trust and discretion–more often than not, the
client will be totally open and willing to trust the hair expert’s
vision. Choosing a hairstyle is often the very last process, as
it has to work with everything else like the dress, the shoes,
and the make-up… quite often the hairstylist ends up helping
with choosing the outfit too!
Do you have interesting stories from the all-important day
of styling?
There are lots… we’ve seen it all, from last-minute changes
of mind and models arriving 15 minutes before show time,
to private jets being hired when a client only wants one
particular stylist! Shows and events are always highly
pressurised, but that just adds to the atmosphere and there’s
nothing more satisfying than seeing your finished look in all
its glory!
Paul Stafford
What kind of work do you get typically
called in for?
We get called in mostly for shoots,
films or concerts, visiting celebrities
like Ellie Goulding, Gillian Anderson
or Jamie Dornan. There seems to be
lots of movies and high-production TV
programmes being made in Northern
Ireland at the moment and we get many calls. Mostly we’ll
try to accommodate the celebrity on set or at their hotel, but
some prefer to come to the salon to be looked after. It’s a
nice atmosphere and it can be very private.
Is there anything you usually need to do to the celebrity’s
hair before the event, such as deep conditioning, colour
change and so on?
Before any major event there is always a consultation to
consider what pressures and stresses the hair is going to be
under, especially if the celebrity has had other services and
treatments done elsewhere or on the road, or where the
condition is less than perfect. It’s imperative we talk to the
advisers as well as the celebrity, just so we understand what
limitations we are under.
How long do you spend planning the star’s look? Give us a
run-down of the process.
Actually, you never get much time to plan a look. It’s usually
a picture sent in advance and then a few phone calls, unless
it’s an awards event… then you are briefed in advance and
will have time to develop the look. Even then, the celeb is too
busy to attend trials, so in a lot of cases you have to do the
run-through on a stand-in.

Who doesn’t love a good chick flick, especially the ones set against breathtaking
landscapes? What do our favourite actresses’ hairdos tell us about the women
they portray? ADITI PADIYAR decodes looks from five travel movies.
EAT PRAY LOVE
The story of one woman’s mid-life crisis and a long and fulfilling journey of self-discovery.
Incidentally, the way we wear our hair is an expression of our moods, not only
in that moment but also of where we are in our lives. In the upper half of the
poster, Julia Roberts’ character has embarked on a journey of self-discovery,
a jumble of nervousness and apprehension, punctuated by joy and laughter.
Roberts looks happy here but has a long way to go in her journey, her soft
brown hair, relaxed yet tied up in an inconspicuous ponytail, keeping with
her casual look. Her hair in the bottom half, towards the climax of the movie
however says a different story. Roberts’ character has finally found love; her
light blonde hair left open and naturally wavy now, indicative of the long
journey she has been on and at last found peace.
W
e all have those moments where we want to look like our beloved stars from the movies; a
gorgeous body, fabulous clothes and most importantly, the perfect hair. Much has been said
about the role costumes play in building an on-screen character, but how much do their
hairstyles speak for the characters they portray?
THE

THE SISTERHOOD OF THE
TRAVELLING PANTS
An iconic coming-of-age movie about four
best friends and their travelling pants.
The Sisterhood…brings out
four unique personalities of the
protagonists through four completely
different hairstyles. Blake Lively’s
straight blonde hair, Alexis Bledel’s
soft black curls, Amber Tamblyn’s
poker straight black hair with
shocking blue highlights and America
Ferrera’s simple cascading black
hair all define and complement their
characters perfectly. As the girls grow
older, in a sequel of the movie, their
hairstyles change too, evolving with
their characters.
THE HOLIDAY
Two women from different
countries swap homes to escape
from their crumbling love lives,
only to rediscover love.
The poster is a perfect
example of the starkly
different characters
Cameron Diaz and Kate
Winslet play and how well
their hair defines them.
Diaz’s chic blonde and
perfectly maintained hair
reflect her always well-
put-together personality,
whereas Winslet’s soft
brown hair with golden
highlights tied in a basic
half pony is exactly who
her character is, simple
and unconcerned with
appearances.
UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN
A divorced writer moves to Tuscany on a whim,
hoping to find love and love does, indeed, find
her.
Diane Lane’s character buys a villa in
Tuscany, hoping her Tuscan life can
rekindle her love life. The character’s
optimism and positive outlook can be
gauged from her smile as well as her
radiant brown waves, swept sideways. The
hairstyle itself is quite simple and no frills
but the bouncy and healthy hair liven up
her face, exuding a certain thrill you see in
someone who’s excited at the prospect
of starting life anew. As the movie
progresses, we see Lane’s hair undergo
many a different looks, switching between
a shade of burnt orange and soft blonde.
WILD
Reese Witherspoon’s award-
winning performance of a woman
who embarks on a solo trek across
the Pacific Crest Trail.
As the protagonist takes on an
adventure, the most important
thing to note here is she has
a very practical hairstyle.
Witherspoon’s naturally
blonde hair fall straight and is
made to appear deliberately
un-styled. A simple centre-
parting and shoulder length
hair speaks for the character’s
lack of interest in vanity. Her
hair stays the same through
the movie, untouched and
overlooked, bringing out the
character’s single-minded
focus towards her goal.

Super
Summer Styles
Effortlessly Cute
This style requires
minimal effort, ensuring
that you exude a
boyish charm. Work
with freshly washed
hair and use gel to
set it, while allowing
it to dry naturally. All
you need to do is pop
on some shades and
you’re good to go!
Boho Boy
If you’re one with curly
hair, then it’s time to go
down the boho route and
channel your inner hipster.
Blow-dry your hair, letting
it take its own shape. Using
your fingers, apply hair gel
to the hair at the front so
as to keep them away from
the face. Also, adding John
Lennon glasses to this look
is never a bad idea.
Corporate Candy
For your work trip, a
slick, neat look is always
a good idea. Work some
hair gel into your damp
hair, combing the hair
backwards, maintaining
clean, sharp lines. Go
in for a clean shave as
well, or a neatly trimmed
beard that won’t lead to
you compromising on a
professional yet sexy look.
Accessorise Right
For all the times that
your hair acts stubborn
or to simply stay away
from putting in effort into
styling your hair when out,
wearing hair accessories
such as a hat, beanie or
cap is ideal. Macho and
trendy, this will ensure that
your hair stays clean, rid
of impurities and
protected from the harsh
summer sun.
The Male Hair Bun
Long hair can be very
flattering on men, if
groomed right. If you’re
one of those with the
trendy shoulder length hair,
don’t trade them in for a
shorter cut to deal with
the scorching heat! Just
like Jared Leto, wear your
hair in a bun and watch as
the ladies swoon. Opt for
a messy style when out
casually and go in for a
slicker style of a hair bun for
formal events.
Swept Over
All you beach bums
out there, this one’s
for you! Add some
texturising spray to
damp hair and simply
use your fingers to
tousle your hair and
give it direction. Take
some moulding paste
or pomade onto your
fingers and work it
into your hair to help
hold the style.

Straight, beautiful locks can get
hard to manage through the day.
To prevent them from tangling,
breaking and getting frizzy, apply a

sure that they stay managable
through the day.

Gentle Exfoliating Apricot Scrub
To keep you radiant this summer, Leeford has launched four
super products! Meglow Premium Fairness cream for women
is a smooth textured cream enriched with the goodness of aloe
vera, cucumber, sandalwood extracts, Vitamins A, C and E and

it from within and unveil a bright, light and evenly toned
complexion without spots and patches. The Meglow Fairness
facewash for women is a unique formula that will cleanse your
skin deep down to your pores dissolving dirt, oil and make-up.
Dead skin that can dry, roughen and dull your skin texture will
be cleared away for fresh, bright skin. The Meglow Sunblock
gel is a weightless, ultra-light gel formula that provides superior
broad spectrum defense preventing sunburns, sun spots & skin
darkening due to prolonged sun exposure. This non-greasy and
non-pore clogging formulation provides all day hydration and
an even, non-shiny finish that works beautifully alone or under

  • 10. June 201512 Dear Reader, The very essence of travel is adventure and exploration. Moving out of your comfort zone, you explore a new place, people and culture leaving your personal perspectives at home. Our travel issue gives a nod to the adventurer in all of you and its packed to bursting with adventure! How hair is worn in any community or country is best representative of its culture, beliefs and philosophy. As an avid traveller, my favourite moments are when I come into contact with the local beauty and hairdressing traditions and learn their background and significance. Our cover story, ‘Glocal Hair Affairs’ will take you on a whirlwind tour of traditional hairstyles seen across the globe, from the demure Geisha ‘mage’ to the Chickasaw bun, the spread will leave you amazed. And for those who seek quirky surprises our ‘Hair and There’ story is all about bizarre hair festivals that communities partake in around the world. In a similar vein we have analysed popular culture and cinema in terms of its hair symbolisms in Hollywood movies, how they represent the journeys of the characters through styles. Legendary beauty expert Shahnaz Husain has shared a power-packed feature on travel hair care that will empower you to put your best mane forward. And our Beauty cover story, ‘The Ultimate Beauty Checklist’ will be your dictionary when it comes to planning your beauty needs during your travel. Dr. Varun Katyal shares his own skin care expertise for your travel skin care needs in ‘Glow on the go’. Adding a quirky touch to beauty, our ‘Bizarre Indulgences’ story could be your ready reckoner for the extreme spa experiences out there that you could plan your next vacation around. ‘Diary of a Jetsetter’ is our nod to those of you who put your best face forward even as you straddle time zones and jet lag, and for the envious one a how-to guide to do so. In case you are homebound, we have a feature on detoxification techniques that are easy to emulate. For the men, we have a ‘Travel Essentials’ feature that you can trust to take care of all your unique travel needs. And for the aspiring hairstylist, an interview with Ralf Boss—TIGI’s Creative Director for Asia South Pacific. Thank you, ! ~ Sonal magazine is available at all leading bookstores and news stands in India. For subscription, sms SPENTA HAIR to 57333 FOOD FOR THOUGHT The hilarious ‘Babbling Beards’ article just made my day. I have been sporting a different styles every week just out of curiosity. It has evidently made a massive difference; I’ve noticed the changing perspectives of the women I meet. So it is true; I just have to figure out a style that appeals to most of them! - Roy May 201544 MARSALA STAIRS The colour of the year deserves its own dedicated style and this geometrical piece of art is not for the faint-hearted! The cascading hair with abrupt yet sculpted layers will add a note of Renaissance modernism to any personality irrespective of clothing or occasion. Straightened or crimped, hair is elevated to a statement rather than an afterthought and the colour takes the ‘Sculpt’ philosophy to a new stratosphere! DOUBLE HAT CHIGNON The chignon has travelled a long way from ancient Greece where it first added glamour to Athenian women. Traditionally, the chignon was a smallish bun at the nape of the neck. Lakmé salon has created its own dramatic version of this classic low-key style, inspired by the double domes commonly seen in Barcelona. Voluminous hair sleekly styled in an up-do that resembles a faux hat, this style adds oodles of oomph when needed. With a sculpted saree gown, this can even take you back to ancient times as you make a queenly entrance at soirees! May 2015 45 May 201572 Babbling Beards I t’s quite a daunting task to weigh the intensely contradicting preferences in choosing what style of beard to sport. Considering the options, it’s a shame to not have experimented with the second most masculine thing you have to offer. Although, the only king in the deck of cards without any facial hair is of Hearts, it shouldn’t convince you otherwise. You could probably give it a shot to get your fist bumped by your men and swooned over by your women. This is the perfect season for you as summer speeds up the growing process and also protects you from tanning, making it easier for you to achieve the ultimate symbol of strength, manliness, self-esteem and status. A man with a beard has an immediate, visceral impact. POOJA RAISINGHANI sheds some light on the general perceptions for you to choose your look this summer! You’re sure to dominate her entire existence and she’ll be more than happy to jump onto this ride. male grooming “Hey, I’m actually a really nice guy. Let’s cuddle! No? Okay then, brace yourself for some poetry. “ “Feel my masculinity from afar. Mess with me and I’ll have my men take care of you. “ “Well, I have better things to do in life. I could add you to that list.” STUBBLE The rugged stubble can be misleading in several fun ways. It speaks volume about a man who cares to keep up with the current trends. Contrary to popular belief, the reckless look is extremely high maintenance for it requires timely grooming and styling sessions. But, you’ll be out there making them wonder what you’ve been up to. You were probably busy cracking that major deal or practicing for the soccer finals. Lightly scratch your beard when you spot them looking at you as though in deep thought, that’ll do the trick. SOUL PATCH+GOATEE Having gotten bullied your entire teenage life, these patches of hair finally shoved those disturbing encounters in a dark alley, right where they belong. If only you could keep that desperate adolescent version of you from making every situation awkward. An annoying know-it-all who’ll criticise the wine till its last drop to a mushy sitcom dude who believes in romanticizing everything; basically anything that increases the probability of getting in her pants will sum up a man who ‘chooses’ to sport this look. CHIN STRAP BEARD You live in the gym, juggling your women while grooving to the beats of EDM. Then subtly flex your biceps to exhibit your abstract tattoo for some more attention; attention which you totally deserve. Do they have any idea how long it takes you to shape that perfect strap? You’re sure to dominate her entire existence and she’ll be more than happy to jump onto this ride. AllImages©shutterstock.com May 2015 73 MADE OVER I just happened to skim through the pages of at a salon and it took care of my entertainment completely. I ended up getting one of the styles featured in the magazine. I’ve now subscribed to , so I guess I’ll be getting a new look every month. The best part is that you give so many tips that I have modified most of my hair and skin care rituals. I thank you for a whole new me! - Niharika

Here are some fabulous styles you can achieve yourself at home, matched with the neckline you’re rocking. Halter neck High neck Do it yourself! • Begin creating this look with hair that was washed and dried smooth the day before for the best results. Section your fringe and clip this away to one side. • Spritz the remaining hair with a heat protector and secure it into a side ponytail. • Tong hair from the ponytail on a small barrel curling iron in small sections. • Split the hair into two sections and start pinning it loosely to the head with grips. • Blow-dry the fringe area smooth and set into a loose fingerwave before adding your hair accessories and setting with hairspray. • 28. Biolage 6-in-1 Deep Smoothing Serum from MATRIX is your best bet against frizz. By Shefali Samdria A monsoon magic trick for smooth hair! T he summer heat has everyone frazzled and begging for the monsoon. Those cool showers soothe the heat but bring oodles of humidity to the atmosphere. Unfortunately, frizz and humidity are best friends! The rainy season brings maximum humidity which is disastrous for your hair. No matter how well you style your hair or use styling products, it can undo the style within minutes. And what’s worse, this is a permanent feature of the monsoon months which means sticky and/or frizzy hair every day no matter if you shampoo or blow-dry every day. In 2005, Matrix India introduced their iconic Biolage 6-in-1 Deep Smoothing Serum which is India’s 1st Professional 6-in-1 Serum that offers six benefits in one product. The serum, which is a favourite with women across India, has been voted by 25,000 consumers as the Best Anti-Frizz Serum in India at the Femina Beauty Awards in 2015. It is enriched with a fusion of avocado, grape-seed oils and frizz taming polymers and works wonders on your mane during the monsoon. What is humidity and how is it related to frizz? Humidity is the amount of water vapour in the air. When exposed to high humidity levels, hair absorbs too much water from the air, causing the cuticle to swell, become tough, thereby creating frizz. Therefore more humidity = more frizz. Winner of the Best Anti-Frizz Serum in India at the Femina Beauty Awards in 2015. June 201530

Separate your hair into sections and use tongs to curl each section from the roots to the ends. Open out the curls with your fingers, sweep a major section of your hair to one side and create an undone side part. CREATIVE TIP: To add more texture, apply a cocktail of Bed Head Manipulator and Bed Head Masterpiece Hairspray to dry hair.

But this doesn’t have to translate to chopping off your wonderful tresses and giving up that gorgeous feminine look. By launching the all new ‘Pink-The Easy Collection’, System Professional’s Style Global Ambassador Patrick Cameron showed us that you do not need to lose your length to manage your locks this season! This world-renowned hairdresser’s vision, talent and enthusiasm for his craft have received tremendous appreciation at multiple international hair shows that he has conducted world over. His presentations are often electric and theatrical, complete with music and dance performances, making the experience not only educational but also entertaining. Acknowledged as a long hair expert, he devised the collection to showcase step-by-step looks and demonstrations to the hairdressers that struggle with styling long hair. This session was conducted at the Wella International Studio in Delhi; it combined training and workshops for global hair trends, stressing on techniques, creativity and image. He offered training sessions to the stylists about the current trends followed by a ‘look and learn’ show. While at this event, we caught up with Patrick Cameron for a quick chat about all things hair. Here’s what he had to say: Tell us how you ventured into the profession of hairdressing and something about your training. I was a late starter. I didn’t always want to be a hairdresser; although, hairdressing was something I had always been interested in. When I left school, music and art were my passions and I was working as a graphic artist when I happened to pass a hairdressing salon in my hometown. I worked with Lyndsay Loveridge, who trained and mentored me. Can you throw some light on your love for dressing long hair? Most of my female clients had long hair during my training and wanted to keep it that way. I was never happy just trimming and blow-drying. I always wanted to keep them simple and elegant and used to dress the hair up whenever I got the chance. This was something I found I could really excel in. Where do you draw your inspiration from when it comes to creating new hairstyles? I get my inspiration from a variety of Patrick Cameron

I am lucky enough to have travelled the world and I continue to do so with my work, so inspiration can come from anything that I come across. I also love movies and magazines; sometimes I simply pick up an idea from the streets of London where I live. Tell us something about Pink-The Easy Collection. How did your idea come into being? The Pink collection is put together to show hairdressers how easy it is to style long hair. That is why I created 20 easy step-by-step looks to show the hairdressers how to really work with long hair and how to get the hair to look modern. This collection is dedicated more to hairdressers and stylists than to the customers. I believe that the more that you share your ideas with other people, the more room there is for creativity. I observe hairdressers all over the world. I am a big movie lover and take some ideas from the movies and magazines that I come across. Through this collection, I want to help the aspiring stylists who face difficulties in dressing and creating looks for long hair. What goes into creating a new collection such as yours? Do tell us something about the process? I think of myself as a hairdresser’s hairdresser. I love training, doing shows, seminars, photo shoots and TV work. For creating new styles and looks, it requires extensive research, immense patience and perseverance. I draw inspirations from whatever happens around me and always want to come up with something really simple and easy. How important is education and training when it comes to the profession of hairdressing? I think it is really important for people in our profession to constantly work on things and keep themselves updated with the new trends coming up every now and then. Describe your hairdressing philosophy in one line. Keep it simple! Do share a piece of advice for budding hairstylists. I think my advice to anyone would be to find something they are good at i.e. coloring, cutting or even long hair and excel in that particular aspect. Don’t just be good at it–be great at it. Also, keep learning from whatever and whoever you come across. Absorbing from the environment and keeping abreast with new fashion trends and techniques are keys to success in this industry. Do share some quick hairstyling tips that you swear by with our readers. Adding softness and texture to the hair is the best way of styling long hair. To the hairstylists, my advice would be to know your craft from all angles. Learning constantly and innovating styling techniques is what is required to be an expert. Since most Indian women have long and wavy hair, using different products like System Professional Luxe Oil works brilliantly with wavy hair; it acts as a great protectant and helps in styling the hair. System Profession-al Keratin Boost is also an amazing product as it puts conditioning agents into the hair. It is a synthetic molecule that boosts the protein into the hair that helps protect the hair from heat and humidity.

  • 37. I was travelling across rural Thailand when I saw a woman in a traditional Thai dress ‘Pha nung’, her hair styled elaborately in a doughnut shaped bun with a single wooden pin and I was floored. I approached her and learnt how this way of wearing hair was a tradition to be followed on days important to her faith and culture. I realised that as much as clothing, hairstyles across the cultures are representative of their philosophy, lifestyle and concepts of beauty. History The oldest known record of hairstyling is from 30,000 years ago. In ancient civilizations, women’s hair was often elaborately and carefully dressed in special ways, Roman women wore their hair in complicated styles and wore them as long as possible until the Middle Ages. During the Roman age as well as in the 16th century in the western world, women began to wear their hair in extremely ornate styles and hairstyles slowly started reflecting popular cultural movements and philosophies that continue even today. Japanese women maintain silky hair through minimal shampooing with seaweed cleansers and comb tsubaki oil through their hair to keep it flawless through the day. For this reason, Japanese women wear their hair in a variety of exotic buns like the shimada mage (hair gathered at the top with a small section pointing outwards the bottom) or yoko hyugo (voluminous high bun). A quick glance at relics from Mohen-jo-Daro to Ajanta reveal that our ancestors favoured long locks styled in braids and ponytails, embellished with tons of gold ornaments. This is one tradition that ceases to go out of style. You will see it at weddings and religious festivals, outsmarting the buns and coiffures. Women these days even opt for extensions or faux braids to add that sashaying oomph factor. Add a dash of contemporary accessories to elevate the look to perfection! Here are amazing ideas for your next trip; we’ve made sure you get to toss your hair way too much! Get red, go! Today, it has snowballed into a grand celebration for those blessed with a red mane and also for those who admire them. The response to this gathering has been phenomenal; the sheer enthusiasm and participation from around 80 countries speaks for itself. In conversation with Ralf Boss You knew you wanted to be a hairdresser at 13. How did you reach this decision at such a tender age? My parents always accompanied me to get my haircut, but one fine day I decided to go by myself for it. I chose a new hair salon and while I was getting my hair cut, I looked around and just loved the atmosphere. At that moment I decided that this will be my job. Even my parents respected my decision and four years later, I finally started my hairdressing and hairstyling career. R alf Boss is a veteran of the professional hairstyling industry and has been TIGI’s key anchor for over 21 years. Ralf knew he wanted to become a famous hairdresser by the age of 13! He started as an ambassador for TIGI and then graduated to TIGI Art Director for Germany and ran his own TIGI salon in Germany for over 15 years. He leads the TIGI Asia Educator Team as the Creative Director Taiwan & Asia South Pacific. Presenting the indomitable, Ralf Boss! June 201550
  • 47. expert talk Please share your education background and early days of pursuing your passion for hairdressing. I was blessed with my parents’ support. I started with learning the basics from a hairdressing school in Germany for the first six months; post which, I started working in a salon. But, to find the ideal one, I had to switch three salons in just two years. I got the best exposure with the salon where the owner took me to London for Vidal Sassoon and Toni&Guy seminars twice a year. Apart from this, I trained myself a lot to bring out the best in me. Coming to your first salon ‘Cosmic Stylers’, what was your core philosophy and vision for this venture? The salon design that I created was very special for me, the concept being, ‘Hairdresser Aliens Landed on Earth and Opened a Salon’. I designed the interiors to look like a UFO; the walls were painted silver, the reception was carved round and had egg shaped mirrors. I didn’t just conceptualize the salon but also helped in its building by charting the interior design blueprint. With loud music and super cool stylists, it became the trendiest salon in town. Every hairdresser dreams of his own salon but few realize the challenges and early struggles; Could you please share your own experiences? Charting out a solid business plan came naturally to me, thanks to my father who, being a banker, was very good with numbers. I clearly knew how many customers and how much I would need to charge per day to cover all my costs. I had learned a lot in these 15 years. Slowly but surely, you gained a profile as a mentor and Art director for TIGI Germany. How did that come about? I started to work very early to promote and help TIGI’s growth in Germany and my salon acted like a showcase for TIGI as a brand. For the four years that I was the Ambassador for TIGI, I was one of their ‘New Wild Generation Guys’ and after that I became an Art Director at TIGI. Now, I train the next generation with the same enthusiasm as I witnessed during my training. You worked and taught extensively in China. What were the unique challenges and learnings of working in such a different culture and industry? I didn’t feel any difference in the industry and the culture was more shocking for me than the environment. It took six months for me to understand the behaviour and psyche. After the initial hitches, I successfully conducted around 300 seminars in around 30 cities in China. I must say, China has taught me a lot. Since then, you have taken up the mantle for TIGI in Taiwan and Asia South Pacific. Our readers would love to hear the highlights of such a prolific journey! To lead the Taiwan Academy was already my dream from the time I lived in Shanghai. The people in Taiwan reminded me of Europe, they are nice, educated and friendly. I also married a Japanese woman and have three kids; this place makes me feel homely. Coming back to the question, it is not an easy job to keep the Academy busy. It takes a lot of time to get enough students to keep the academy working. We need around 1,000 paid admissions per year to make it work perfectly. Please share your advice to young and aspiring hairstylists. The best advice that I could give to the young hairstylist is that they should follow their heart, keep the passion alive and train themselves to overcome their weaknesses. This way, one can get the best out of their potential. After all, hairdressing is the best job on earth! June 2015 51 Cut, colour and style—which of these did you aspire to excel in intitially? To become a hairstylist in Germany, you start with cleaning and assisting, as is the case everywhere else. After that, you learn basic colouring (global applications), perming and highlighting, post which they finally teach you to cut. Ideally, the first step of learning/assisting takes three years where you are schooled and then you practice at a salon—it’s called the dual system of learning. I always believed that changing a person’s look with a haircut is more fun but the haircut will only work when complemented with beautiful colour.
  • 48. June 201552 GearUp!As you prepare for that much awaited, relaxing holiday, don’t forget to care for your beautiful tresses! SHAHNAZ HUSAIN tells you how to pack a punch with your hair despite your busy schedule during your travels.
  • 49. June 2015 53 hair care is a good option. If you’re someone with long hair, take a headband and hair clips to keep your hair tidy. Remember to take a scarf along to protect your hair from exposure to the sun, wind and dust. You will need it especially if you are out motoring, boating, trekking or just strolling. There are things that you must remember to pack to protect your hair and also keep it looking good. Whether it’s a beach destination or a hill station, carry a hair cream or serum that contains sunscreen. Actually, the effects of sun-exposure are much more near reflective surfaces, like water and snow. You also need to take a mild herbal shampoo, oil and conditioner. A small hairdryer would be very useful in both destinations. You can take along herbal hair mascara for temporary streaks to add that touch of glamour when you dine out; the effect lasts till the next shampoo. You may carry rollers or a heating rod to style the hair yourself if you want to go all out. T ravel adds a wonderful dimension to one’s life. It is not only refreshing and rejuvenating but also a great learning experience. You may be travelling for work or may be on vacation, you may have a hectic schedule or a relaxed one, the fact remains that you are away from home at the time and means to care for yourself and make yourself attractive are not easily available. So, here are some tips to limit your grooming needs, yet make you look attractive and feel comfortable! Travelling light has its advantages, so you need items that are compact and portable. Get yourself a spacious shoulder bag and two small, plastic-lined cases for your toiletries and make-up. Your beauty aids should be within easy reach. Before setting out on your journey, have your hairstyling done, including a colouring job. A short hairdo that can be brushed and set easily AllImages©shutterstock.com
  • 50. June 201554 If you are holidaying in the mountains and the weather is cold and dry, the hair may lack moisture. Apply oil, leaving it on overnight and use a mild herbal shampoo in the morning. After shampooing, don’t forget to use a creamy conditioner, massaging it lightly into your hair, focussing on the ends of your hair. You can arrange for natural ingredients for hair care very easily when you are travelling. Among these are tea bags, lemons, beer, etc. For dry hair, use a beer rinse. After you shampoo, pour the juice of a lemon to beer all over your hair. Leave on for five minutes and rinse off with plain water. For oily hair, lemon juice can be used for the last rinse. A few quick fixes or emergency treatments for the hair can really be useful while travelling, especially if you have a hectic schedule. When you have no time to shampoo, put a little Eau De Cologne on your brush and brush your hair. Cologne absorbs oil and leaves your hair cleaner and fragrant. In warm and humid weather, add the juice of a lemon and half a cup of rose water to a mug of water and use it as a last rinse. If you suddenly find that your hair has too much static i.e. a ‘fly away’ hair problem, just run damp hands all over your hair and avoid brushing them too much. Travelling across time zones at high speed means dealing with jet lag, dry skin and frizzy hair. Eat light meals during the flight. Salads and fruits should help ward off symptoms of jet-lag. Water and fruit juices will help in preventing loss of body fluids. If it’s a long flight, take a walk down the aisle every two or three hours. Lastly, relax and don’t forget to enjoy your journey! For the beach, a swimming cap would help to protect the hair from the sun. Since sea water makes the hair rough and dry, don’t forget to apply a leave-in conditioner or serum. Take a small pea-sized amount of it, smear on both palms and glide them over the hair. Alternately, massage it lightly into the hair before you set your hair in the desired style. Wash the hair with less shampoo and apply conditioner or hair serum again for protection. In a warm and humid climate, the hair may need to be washed frequently. Simply rinse your hair instead of using a creamy conditioner. You can even make your own hair rinsing mixture in the hotel room. For this, add a tea bag to four to five cups of warm water. Remove the tea bag and cool the water. Then add the juice of a lemon and use it as a last rinse. This helps to make the hair silky and shiny. Hair and beauty expert Shahnaz Husain.
  • 51. June 2015 55 Styling the st rs: We talk to three super stylists behind the A-listers’ amazing locks and find out what their jobs entail. FeatureEmilyLouiseOveryMainimageistock Angelo Vallillo Who have you styled recently? A few examples are Douglas Booth and Gracie Carvalho for DRAMA magazine, David Gandy for GQ magazine and Leslie Mann at this year’s Oscars. How is the relationship generally between celebrity and stylist when you’re given the task of styling an A-lister for a big event? It’s crucial to research a bit about the individual before you turn up to the shoot or hotel room. You need to have an idea in advance about what looks good on them and to have some images in your mind about what will suit them. I find it best to work with the client’s expectations, but always give them something they haven’t had before. It doesn’t need to be a massive change, just as long as you leave your stamp on it. How soon after your booking do you start planning a star’s look? I like to start planning as soon as I’m booked up. I’ll research the celebrity online and then talk to them and the photographer or publicist about what their expectations are so I’m on their wavelength. That way I’m well prepared, and I’ve been able to find my inspiration from them and the latest catwalks and magazines. Richard Ward Who have been the most memorable celebrities you’ve styled in your career? There have been so many… my team and I have been involved with lots of different high profile events–from the Brits and MTV Awards, to royal weddings and many international fashion shows. When styling, do you go with the star’s preferences, or do they just trust your vision? The relationship between celebrity and stylist is very much based on trust and discretion–more often than not, the client will be totally open and willing to trust the hair expert’s vision. Choosing a hairstyle is often the very last process, as it has to work with everything else like the dress, the shoes, and the make-up… quite often the hairstylist ends up helping with choosing the outfit too! Do you have interesting stories from the all-important day of styling? There are lots… we’ve seen it all, from last-minute changes of mind and models arriving 15 minutes before show time, to private jets being hired when a client only wants one particular stylist! Shows and events are always highly pressurised, but that just adds to the atmosphere and there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing your finished look in all its glory! Paul Stafford What kind of work do you get typically called in for? We get called in mostly for shoots, films or concerts, visiting celebrities like Ellie Goulding, Gillian Anderson or Jamie Dornan. There seems to be lots of movies and high-production TV programmes being made in Northern Ireland at the moment and we get many calls. Mostly we’ll try to accommodate the celebrity on set or at their hotel, but some prefer to come to the salon to be looked after. It’s a nice atmosphere and it can be very private. Is there anything you usually need to do to the celebrity’s hair before the event, such as deep conditioning, colour change and so on? Before any major event there is always a consultation to consider what pressures and stresses the hair is going to be under, especially if the celebrity has had other services and treatments done elsewhere or on the road, or where the condition is less than perfect. It’s imperative we talk to the advisers as well as the celebrity, just so we understand what limitations we are under. How long do you spend planning the star’s look? Give us a run-down of the process. Actually, you never get much time to plan a look. It’s usually a picture sent in advance and then a few phone calls, unless it’s an awards event… then you are briefed in advance and will have time to develop the look. Even then, the celeb is too busy to attend trials, so in a lot of cases you have to do the run-through on a stand-in. BEHIND THE SCENES

ADITI PADIYAR decodes looks from five travel movies. EAT PRAY LOVE The story of one woman’s mid-life crisis and a long and fulfilling journey of self-discovery. Incidentally, the way we wear our hair is an expression of our moods, not only in that moment but also of where we are in our lives. In the upper half of the poster, Julia Roberts’ character has embarked on a journey of self-discovery, a jumble of nervousness and apprehension, punctuated by joy and laughter. Roberts looks happy here but has a long way to go in her journey, her soft brown hair, relaxed yet tied up in an inconspicuous ponytail, keeping with her casual look. Her hair in the bottom half, towards the climax of the movie however says a different story. Roberts’ character has finally found love; her light blonde hair left open and naturally wavy now, indicative of the long journey she has been on and at last found peace. W e all have those moments where we want to look like our beloved stars from the movies; a gorgeous body, fabulous clothes and most importantly, the perfect hair. Much has been said about the role costumes play in building an on-screen character, but how much do their hairstyles speak for the characters they portray? THE MANE CINEM
  • 69. June 2015 73 hair affair THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELLING PANTS An iconic coming-of-age movie about four best friends and their travelling pants. The Sisterhood…brings out four unique personalities of the protagonists through four completely different hairstyles. Blake Lively’s straight blonde hair, Alexis Bledel’s soft black curls, Amber Tamblyn’s poker straight black hair with shocking blue highlights and America Ferrera’s simple cascading black hair all define and complement their characters perfectly. As the girls grow older, in a sequel of the movie, their hairstyles change too, evolving with their characters. THE HOLIDAY Two women from different countries swap homes to escape from their crumbling love lives, only to rediscover love. The poster is a perfect example of the starkly different characters Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet play and how well their hair defines them. Diaz’s chic blonde and perfectly maintained hair reflect her always well- put-together personality, whereas Winslet’s soft brown hair with golden highlights tied in a basic half pony is exactly who her character is, simple and unconcerned with appearances. UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN A divorced writer moves to Tuscany on a whim, hoping to find love and love does, indeed, find her. Diane Lane’s character buys a villa in Tuscany, hoping her Tuscan life can rekindle her love life. The character’s optimism and positive outlook can be gauged from her smile as well as her radiant brown waves, swept sideways. The hairstyle itself is quite simple and no frills but the bouncy and healthy hair liven up her face, exuding a certain thrill you see in someone who’s excited at the prospect of starting life anew. As the movie progresses, we see Lane’s hair undergo many a different looks, switching between a shade of burnt orange and soft blonde. WILD Reese Witherspoon’s award- winning performance of a woman who embarks on a solo trek across the Pacific Crest Trail. As the protagonist takes on an adventure, the most important thing to note here is she has a very practical hairstyle. Witherspoon’s naturally blonde hair fall straight and is made to appear deliberately un-styled. A simple centre- parting and shoulder length hair speaks for the character’s lack of interest in vanity. Her hair stays the same through the movie, untouched and overlooked, bringing out the character’s single-minded focus towards her goal. ATIC

  • 72. Super Summer Styles Effortlessly Cute This style requires minimal effort, ensuring that you exude a boyish charm. Work with freshly washed hair and use gel to set it, while allowing it to dry naturally. All you need to do is pop on some shades and you’re good to go! Boho Boy If you’re one with curly hair, then it’s time to go down the boho route and channel your inner hipster. Blow-dry your hair, letting it take its own shape. Using your fingers, apply hair gel to the hair at the front so as to keep them away from the face. Also, adding John Lennon glasses to this look is never a bad idea. Corporate Candy For your work trip, a slick, neat look is always a good idea. Work some hair gel into your damp hair, combing the hair backwards, maintaining clean, sharp lines. Go in for a clean shave as well, or a neatly trimmed beard that won’t lead to you compromising on a professional yet sexy look. Accessorise Right For all the times that your hair acts stubborn or to simply stay away from putting in effort into styling your hair when out, wearing hair accessories such as a hat, beanie or cap is ideal. Macho and trendy, this will ensure that your hair stays clean, rid of impurities and protected from the harsh summer sun. The Male Hair Bun Long hair can be very flattering on men, if groomed right. If you’re one of those with the trendy shoulder length hair, don’t trade them in for a shorter cut to deal with the scorching heat! Just like Jared Leto, wear your hair in a bun and watch as the ladies swoon. Opt for a messy style when out casually and go in for a slicker style of a hair bun for formal events. Swept Over All you beach bums out there, this one’s for you! Add some texturising spray to damp hair and simply use your fingers to tousle your hair and give it direction. Take some moulding paste or pomade onto your fingers and work it into your hair to help hold the style. male matters Minimum efforts, maximum style—HENA DESAI tells you how you can achieve the perfect hairstyle while you’re setting out for your next summer trip. This primer thereby acts as a barrier between the makeup and the skin not allowing the makeup to touch the skin. Kryolan has something for all your make-up needs!
