2.
There are 5 key aspects to a music video:
1) Thought through beat (what the lyrics mean in your
head).
2) Relationship between the song and the visuals.
3) Technical aspect of the music video.
4) Star image, camera shots that make the protagonist
the centre of attention.
Goodwin’s Music Video
Theory
3.
The first step of the process is to analyse the music
structure and understand the chorus and verses.
The second step analyses the main voice of the song
– it is a way to identify the star image.
The final step is the story of an artist of which they
are trying to convey through their song. It can be
established through both the vocals and the visuals.
Thought Through Beat
4.
Illustrate: music videos use certain images and shots to
illustrate the meaning of lyrics to their song and the genre.
(For example the song Hold on we’re going home by
Drake)
Disjuncture: the situation, the meaning of the song is
completely ignored in the music video. (For example the
song Love on top by Beyoncé)
Amplify: repeatability – this is when the images and
camera shots are manipulated and shown repeatedly
throughout the music video and drummed into our vision.
(For example the song Come and save me by Jagwar Ma)
Relation between the music
and the visuals
5.
Goodwin believed that it was important for an artist
to be involved in the music video, by either
performing or acting out a role as a main character or
singer.
It helps the song look more realistic and gives a
connection between the audience and the artist.
For example: Roar by Katy Perry, L$D by Asap
Rocky, Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande.
Narrative and Performance
6.
Goodwin referred to the star image as a vital aspect
of the music video. They are the most important part
as it makes the music video more appealing to the
audience.
The star image is always presented in a unique way,
such as wearing outfits and dance etc.
For example: What do you mean – Justin Bieber,
Telephone – Lady Gaga.

Goodwin says that the technical aspects helps to hold the
music video together through the use of mise-en-scene,
camera, sound and editing.
Lighting and colour enhances the mood for the music
video and emphasises significant parts of the song to
create a dramatic effect and thrill the audience.
The camera aspects play a vital role in making the star
image stand out in the intended way.
The beats of the song are also very useful in creating
effective cuts to go with the rhythm of the song to make
the music video look more entertaining.
Technical Aspects
8.
We will be considering all aspects of Andrew
Goodwin’s theory as they are conventional things of
a music video.
We will be involving an artist in our video and
visuals that correlate with the lyrics. Also, we will
use mise-en-scene, in terms of lights, costume and
location, to emphasise the lyrics and give the right
mood to the audience.
