1. Teaching Philosophy
Everyone lives with passionate aspirations for their lives, be it venturing into to the realm
of physician, astronaut, lawyer or even a veterinarian. The choice of endeavor does not reduce
the passion and as a Father of five, being like most parents who ask their children what they want
to be when they grow up, I expected a response indicative of a ten-year-old girl when I
enthusiastically asked my daughter that same question. Her answer came as a surprise when she
replied she wanted to be a journalist. Her chirpy voice accompanied with a big smile indicated I
could not have known her desires and curiously, I asked why she picked journalism as her goal.
She quickly responded with a simple, persuasive voice. “Because I love to write”.
My passion for education and understanding began with a dream of becoming an
Attorney. I have a strong sense of ethics and morality, philosophically analyzing why people
make decisions or conduct themselves in a particular manner. Through the years of educational
endeavors and opportunities in the United States Navy, I discovered a deep craving for education
and academics. Additionally, becoming a Navy leader, coupled with training Sailors, my evident
calling or purpose in life become apparent.
I have strong desires toward a calling in life to be an educator, leader, and trainer. My
desires are for excellence in my education and the classes I have taken were oriented with the
intent that one day I would be a Professor at the University level teaching leadership, business
communication, ethics, management, international business, and various business focused
studies.
In my daily activities as a Navy Chief and college student, I follow a personal guidance
ensuring my commitment for successfully meeting my goals professionally and academically,
employing personal endeavors. This guidance translates to my objectives of being a Professor
instructing the future leaders of the world. I strive for excellence in everything I do being
addicted to understanding and knowledge seeking information that will establish my abilities to
be the best educator and leader I can be. I accept my limitations and imperfections but
establishing real accomplishable goals, dealing with errors, learning from those imperfections
allows continuous personal growth and the knowledge that I work to be the best of my ability.
As a Professor and educator, I will relate to students on a practical level allowing for
critical thinking enhancing student development and understanding of the curriculum. I will
challenge their minds, steering them away from their comfort zones that they might develop an
understanding of course material applicable to today’s businesses in the real world.
My goal is to instill a sense of pride in their education by mentoring and encouraging
them toward success one assignment, one objective, and one class at a time, that students might
achieve that educational success with patience and perseverance developing realistic, achievable
goals.
I completed my bachelor’s degree while serving full time active duty these last thirteen
years and on line education offered realistic opportunities to me and other productive students
throughout America complimenting their busy life styles. When teaching I will instill in my
students that ‘not giving up’ and planning their journey can ensure a rewarding successful future.
Ninety nine percent of my studies through my BGS were completed as an on line student
and currently one hundred percent of my MBA credits are from on line courses. These
experiences equipped me with the educational tools necessary for effective application to enrich
2. the online curriculum for business education at any institution. I will hold students accountable
for assignments establishing clear, firm, and fair understandable requirements pertaining to the
curriculum relating their education to the dynamic responsibilities expected in business leaders.
During the course of instruction, I will require students to read current business articles
pertaining to the curriculum while establishing online discussions that focus on textbook
academics featuring business concepts. I personally believe online discussion posts offer
opportunities to mentor students, establish business expectations in future leaders, and give
lectures expanding the student’s knowledge and understanding.
In my classroom, students will earn their grades by obtaining knowledge and applying
that knowledge through discussion posts, multiple choice and written quizzes, exams and written
assignments during the semester. I will understand from student and professor interactions the
struggling student, those students with doubts and those who might feel overwhelmed. It will be
my responsibility to guide them with compassion and understanding.
Similar to my desire of being a boot camp instructor for the Navy, my primary focus will
be to educate all students but have an exceptional passion for helping students that feel like they
are failing. Students are similar to children, they require constant encouragement, with a balance
of mentorship, educational leadership, and when required stern counseling to ensure success with
reward of accomplishment. My ultimate goal will be to guide and teach students to be successful
and will dedicate myself to educate students to the fullest of my capabilities.
I know the importance of success and understand the considerable expenses related to
higher education, specifically, how those expenses relate to students and families. I believe the
average online student is a parent, full time employee, active and inactive military, or possibly an
individual simply seeking additional knowledge. I will put forth the effort necessary for
establishing the importance of students maintaining focus in their educational endeavors. I will
emphasize clearly in the beginning of each class the expectations of the course establishing
specific guidelines through a course syllabus and welcome letters via student email.
Additionally, I will work with students identifying appropriate withdrawal guidelines if
unfortunately necessary. I believe the minimization of student withdrawal percentages occur
when clear, concise expectations with development of active, positive communication are
classroom standards. Most students enter college believing in their own ability to excel but
many drop out or withdraw because the curriculum is difficult, improperly presented or they
simply do not like or trust their professor. Students who enjoy their classes and understand the
professor is there to help and teach will retain that initial excitement through the entire learning
process providing they trust and understand the professor is there to assist them.
My final thoughts pertain to my moral compass or belief in the Professor’s responsibility
and moral obligation he or she has to academics, their students and faculty. A Professor must
approach his service in a professional manner representing the institution or University with
academic proficiency and excellence. All communications and transactions with students must
meet this requirement and resonate to the students through the professor’s online demeanor.
3. I believe all students demand and deserve equality without prejudice, given the opportunity to
understand expectations and challenged to meet those expectations. The presentation of course
material will challenge the students toward goals of excellence. Students will earn their grades
from their academic accomplishments. When unfortunate or unpredictable circumstances arise
accounting for academic shortcomings. I will allow students, with prior notice, to achieve extra
credit at the cost of knowledge through assignments and will grade according to a scale of
actions performed. When needed though, I will assess the earned grade and enforce policies
required by the university. Professorial acumen is an important key to our educational system;
the manner in which the professor presents educational material is a determining factor for
student excellence. A Professor is also responsible for ensuring the required academic material
is covered and portrayed in an innovative style to attract the attention of the great minds
attempting to gain knowledge and experience, which sets them up for success in there career
fields. A Professor qualified to present his students with the material required for their success
achieves much of the foregoing.
My Personal Growth
I will continue my MBA with Columbia College of Missouri and complete my degree in
the summer of 2017. I have completed nine credit hours, Decision Science for Business BUSI
508 (A), Business Communication Theory and Practices BUSI 504 (A), and Marketing Strategy
BUSI 544 (A). After completing each course, I focus on the material, relating what I learned to a
professorial position in the future, and interact with the course discussion posts, assignments,
classmates, and Professor as much as possible.
Upon completion of my MBA, I will enroll in a Doctoral Program for Higher Education
in Leadership. My long-term goal after retiring from the Navy in 2031 will be the pursuit of a
second career with a University as a Faculty Leader. During my remaining time in the Navy, I
will focus on a part time career as an Online Professor. If the opportunity arises where I can be a
remote Professor in person, while on shore duty, I would enjoy that opportunity very much.
Additionally, when I enter my second Department Head tour in 2028 I will have an opportunity
to be a Professor at the Naval Postgraduate School if accepted.
In my professional career as a Navy Chief, the Navy accepted my application for
selection into naval Commissioning Programs as a Limited Duty Officer (LDO) Ensign with a
commission date of September 01, 2017. Upon completion of Officer School, I will assume the
responsibilities of a Main Propulsion Assistant on board a guided missile Destroyer in Norfolk,
VA responsible for managing an Engineering Department of 50 plus personnel and over 12
million dollars in machinery. I personally know with my determination, dedication to academics
and education, when the opportunity arises for a College or University to accept me as a new
educator and novice Professor that I will excel with passion in the career field.
