A MONTHLY JOURNAL OF THE TRiO SSS COMMUNITY
“Helping Students Realize Their Full Potential”
Page Guide
TRiO SSS is happy to spotlight Jeff Dang in this month’s news-
letter. He will graduate this semester with a BS degree in Business Ad-
ministration with a double emphasis in Management and Marketing. Jeff
is a new Peer Mentor for TRiO SSS. He has been an active member of
the program since the spring of 2012. Currently, Jeff is utilizing his
strong organizational and event planning skills while completing an in-
ternship at Arrow Electronics. He is excited to come back to school and
work at TRiO SSS.
Jeff encourages TRiO SSS participants to get involved in cam-
pus life and join clubs and organizations while you are here. As he not-
ed, “much has happened to me in the four years I have been in college. I
have joined many organizations and ended up running a couple of them
myself. Though each posed a challenge, each has provided me the experience I needed to better
both my personal and professional life.” Jeff admits to having struggled academically during his
first two years in college, but adds, “it was because of my extracurricular activities and my will-
ingness to try new endeavors that I was able to meet the people who helped me successfully get
through my four years in college.“
One of Jeff’s favorite memories is of a summer semester a few years ago. He got togeth-
er with a small group of friends planning out a campus club that would create a home away from
home environment for students. What he remembers most is sitting at a coffee shop writing
down the goals for such a club not knowing that the values he had then would dictate his goals
for his life’s work in the future. As Jeff stated, “That day was the start of me finding who I want-
ed to be in life.” During his free time, of which he seems to have little, Jeff spends that time ei-
ther exploring with friends or spending it with family. He has a love for table tennis and so if you
can’t find him easily on campus, chances are you can find him in the Tivoli pool hall playing
ping pong.
In terms of what he has gained from the TRiO SSS program, Jeff gives thanks to his
former TRiO SSS peer mentor for the guidance he received all the times that he was confused in
life or with his academics. He was very grateful to have someone to listen to him rant for an
hour. As Jeff stated, “TRiO SSS has shown me, a first generation student, that there are resources
out there for all students, as long as they are willing to take the chance to become a better person
in the future.” The advice he wants to give to not just a TRiO SSS student, but to all students, is
the same advice his mom gave him a long time ago and she still reminds him about today.
“There is no such thing as a stupid or dumb question, be curious and let that curiosity take you
places that you could have only imagined.”
Jeff plans to graduate this December then look for a job to gain a stronger perspective of
the kind of environment he wants to work in and attempt to have a better answer to the lifelong
question of, “what would you like to be when you grow up?” For the long term, he plans to go
to graduate school and complete an MBA as well as an MS degree in his field and perhaps a PhD
down the road so that he can eventually teach Business courses within the university setting. Ad-
ditionally, he has an interest in utilizing the marketing and management skills from the business
world to open a business of his own one day. His strongest interest in the business field is to em-
power individuals and companies to better the lives of others.
New Peer mentor
Jeffrey Dang | Marketing and Management
My name is Jeffrey Dang, but most people call me Jeff. I am currently pur-
suing a double emphasis in Marketing and Management. I am a senior and
am planning to graduate from the University of Colorado Denver Business
School in Fall 2015. I am a first-generation student and am from a family
of entrepreneurs. Many people may struggle to find a reason to get up in
the morning, but for me, my motivation comes from my parents. I have
learned more than I’ll ever know growing up in my parents’ restaurant.
They taught me to work hard and how to treat people, as well as how to
successfully run a business. Outside of work and academia, I spend most
of my time with my family and friends. If time allows, my favorite hobby
is binge watching on Netflix.
TRiO has been the best foundation for a first-generation student like me, with the help of mentors from the pro-
gram; I gained the confidence to attend and eventually lead student organi-
zations during my four years at the university. There have been many obsta-
cles in college for me, but if not for the people at this university, I don’t
know if I could with confidence be involved and lead students and clubs.
Thi Nguyen | Finance
Hi! My name is Thi Nguyen and I am going into my senior year at the Business
School at the University of Colorado Denver with an emphasis in Finance. My in-
terest in Finance began during the spring of 2013. After completing many of my
core classes, I found myself enjoying classes such as Calculus, Macro-and Micro-
economics as well as Finance. I became especially interested in Finance, as it al-
lows me to make important decisions surrounding money management. My ideal
jobs include commodities trader, financial planner, and finance analyst.
Aside from being a full time student, I have worked various jobs such as waitress-
ing, hosting, and cashiering many restaurants before I joined the corporate world. I
witnessed the many working parts it takes in order to operate a successful business.
Through these experiences, I have learned so much about the business world as
well as myself. In my spare time, I really enjoy trying new food around town. I am
a foodie so I pretty much try and like everything. I like to stay active as well, after
all the food I eat, I like to work it off at the gym. By visiting the gym daily, it keeps me healthy and stress free
which I believe is very important. With this upcoming semester, I hope you really enjoy your time, get involved
on campus, make many new friends, and I’ll be here if you have any questions about anything at all!

Amy Abdelrahman | Psychology
Hi, my name is Amy Abdelrahman and I am a junior at the University of Colora-
do Denver. I am currently majoring in Psychology for the Bachelor of Arts while
double minoring in Ethnic Studies and Communications. I am in Psi Chi, an in-
ternational honor society for Psychology majors. My plan is to graduate a semes-
ter early in fall 2016. I enjoy my major because psychology has allowed me to
truly understand myself and others by teaching me about the human mind and be-
havior. Ultimately, I want to go to graduate school to become a counselor special-
izing with at risk youth.
I love the concept of the mind and body being so connected with one another which is why in my spare
time I participate in yoga and hiking. I also enjoy doing volunteer work in Elementary Schools and Ani-
mal Hospitals. I have been involved in schools a lot, as I have been a preschool teacher’s aid, a TA for the
pre-collegiate summer high school program, and I tutor kindergarten children in English. TRiO has given
me so many opportunities such as finding internships, helping me figure out
my major and overall just answering questions about college in general. I
hope to give this back to all my mentees, come by the office so we can dis-
cuss any questions, comments, or concerns you may have.
New Peer mentor
Kevin Li | Public Health (Pre-Pharmacy)
Hello everyone, I will be starting my junior year at the University of Colorado
Denver. Some of you may be familiar with me because I worked as a front office
staff for TRiO SSS for many semesters, but now I am transitioning to the peer
mentor position! I have found TRiO SSS to be a great support system for me,
especially with all the help from my previous peer mentors and now I wish to do
the same for other students.
My major is Public Health and I am also on a pre-pharmacy track. In addition, I
am very involved on campus and in my community. I am on the executive board
for the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) and the Society of
TRiO Students Club (STS). SASE is an organization that prepares students for
the professional workplace. The purpose of the Society of TRiO Students Club is to enhance and support aca-
demic services and promote cultural and social development. In addition, I am also a participant of the Public
Health Club, the Pre-Pharmacy Club and the Council of Asian Student Leaders Club. I am also a participant of
the Reisher Scholars Program, the Colorado Collegiate Health Professions Development (CO-HPD) Scholars
Program and the Alternative Breaks program. In my free time I enjoy hiking, playing tennis and trying new
food! Feel free to come ask me about any questions regarding classes, clubs, or anything.

Getting Ready for Fall Semester - Success Checklist
Director’s corner
Hello TRiO students,
Welcome to a new and hopefully, wonderful semester for all of you! We in the TRiO SSS office are looking forward to hearing all
about your summer activities. We know that some of you had some awesome summer study abroad experiences, some of you had
great summer internships, some of you travelled on your own and some of you stayed home to attend school or work, we want to
hear all about that, so come in soon and catch us up on your lives. Whether you have good or bad news, we are here to help you and
to be your cheerleaders and advocates. On another note, we received very good news this summer in the TRiO SSS Office. We are
re-funded for another 5 years, Woo Hoo! All our efforts are paying off and we will be able to continue serving you. Come and see
us as soon as you can.
You will be getting email messages from your mentor (who may be new) when the semester begins, and your Coordinator soon, so
be on the lookout for that. We have a lot of great workshops already scheduled for fall 2015, so set up your time management plan
now and schedule yourself to attend these early in the semester before you get bogged down with classes. If you think you might
need tutoring for a particular class, come see the staff in the Learning Resources Center (LRC) in Student Commons, suite 2105
before the semester begins, as the schedule fills up quickly. As a TRiO SSS participant, you get extra tutoring time, so take ad-
vantage of that service and also SI for the science classes.
If you haven’t already done this, check your portal to see if your financial aid is set for the semester. If you see some discrepancies
in your award package, come and see us in the TRiO SSS Office first and we will see if we can help you straighten it out before we
send you through the long lines in the financial aid office. For those of you who completed all your requirements for the TRiO SSS
Book Scholarship, your award for fall semester should show up in your financial aid portal. The Book Scholarship is part of your
financial aid, so it will not be disbursed ahead of time. If you are eligible for a refund after census date, your scholarship funds will
be a part of that refund.
As we begin a new semester, start by setting a goal for yourself of completing all your requirements for the Book Scholarship and
getting the best grades possible. One of the requirements is completion of a financial literacy session. You can do that in different
ways, one is by completing an in-class financial literacy session. These sessions will be shown in the monthly newsletter calendar in
green print, the color of money. These in class sessions do not count as a workshop. You may complete as many sessions as you
like, but we are only counting one as completion of a financial literacy session. You will need to complete 2 other types of work-
shops for that part of the completion requirement for the book scholarship. Another way to complete a financial literacy session is
to complete one online through College in Colorado on the Money 101 website at: www.cicmoney101.org. I will send you more in-
formation in a couple of weeks on how to join the UCD_TRiO_SSS_2015-16 group, which you must do in order for the session to
count. If you already completed all the Money 101 sessions, you can complete a couple of CashCourse online sessions. I will send
you that information by email as well, or you can come and see me to complete a paper and pencil financial literacy course. Below
is the complete list of Book Scholarship requirements for fall 2015. Best of luck!

He will graduate this semester with a BS degree in Business Ad- ministration with a double emphasis in Management and Marketing. Jeff is a new Peer Mentor for TRiO SSS. He has been an active member of the program since the spring of 2012. Currently, Jeff is utilizing his strong organizational and event planning skills while completing an in- ternship at Arrow Electronics. He is excited to come back to school and work at TRiO SSS. Jeff encourages TRiO SSS participants to get involved in cam- pus life and join clubs and organizations while you are here. As he not- ed, “much has happened to me in the four years I have been in college. I have joined many organizations and ended up running a couple of them myself. Though each posed a challenge, each has provided me the experience I needed to better both my personal and professional life.” Jeff admits to having struggled academically during his first two years in college, but adds, “it was because of my extracurricular activities and my will- ingness to try new endeavors that I was able to meet the people who helped me successfully get through my four years in college.“ One of Jeff’s favorite memories is of a summer semester a few years ago. He got togeth- er with a small group of friends planning out a campus club that would create a home away from home environment for students. What he remembers most is sitting at a coffee shop writing down the goals for such a club not knowing that the values he had then would dictate his goals for his life’s work in the future. As Jeff stated, “That day was the start of me finding who I want- ed to be in life.” During his free time, of which he seems to have little, Jeff spends that time ei- ther exploring with friends or spending it with family. He has a love for table tennis and so if you can’t find him easily on campus, chances are you can find him in the Tivoli pool hall playing ping pong. In terms of what he has gained from the TRiO SSS program, Jeff gives thanks to his former TRiO SSS peer mentor for the guidance he received all the times that he was confused in life or with his academics. He was very grateful to have someone to listen to him rant for an hour. As Jeff stated, “TRiO SSS has shown me, a first generation student, that there are resources out there for all students, as long as they are willing to take the chance to become a better person in the future.” The advice he wants to give to not just a TRiO SSS student, but to all students, is the same advice his mom gave him a long time ago and she still reminds him about today. “There is no such thing as a stupid or dumb question, be curious and let that curiosity take you places that you could have only imagined.” Jeff plans to graduate this December then look for a job to gain a stronger perspective of the kind of environment he wants to work in and attempt to have a better answer to the lifelong question of, “what would you like to be when you grow up?” For the long term, he plans to go to graduate school and complete an MBA as well as an MS degree in his field and perhaps a PhD down the road so that he can eventually teach Business courses within the university setting. Ad- ditionally, he has an interest in utilizing the marketing and management skills from the business world to open a business of his own one day. His strongest interest in the business field is to em- power individuals and companies to better the lives of others.
  • 2. New Peer mentor Jeffrey Dang | Marketing and Management My name is Jeffrey Dang, but most people call me Jeff. I am currently pur- suing a double emphasis in Marketing and Management. I am a senior and am planning to graduate from the University of Colorado Denver Business School in Fall 2015. I am a first-generation student and am from a family of entrepreneurs. Many people may struggle to find a reason to get up in the morning, but for me, my motivation comes from my parents. I have learned more than I’ll ever know growing up in my parents’ restaurant. They taught me to work hard and how to treat people, as well as how to successfully run a business. Outside of work and academia, I spend most of my time with my family and friends. If time allows, my favorite hobby is binge watching on Netflix. TRiO has been the best foundation for a first-generation student like me, with the help of mentors from the pro- gram; I gained the confidence to attend and eventually lead student organi- zations during my four years at the university. There have been many obsta- cles in college for me, but if not for the people at this university, I don’t know if I could with confidence be involved and lead students and clubs. Thi Nguyen | Finance Hi! My name is Thi Nguyen and I am going into my senior year at the Business School at the University of Colorado Denver with an emphasis in Finance. My in- terest in Finance began during the spring of 2013. After completing many of my core classes, I found myself enjoying classes such as Calculus, Macro-and Micro- economics as well as Finance. I became especially interested in Finance, as it al- lows me to make important decisions surrounding money management. My ideal jobs include commodities trader, financial planner, and finance analyst. Aside from being a full time student, I have worked various jobs such as waitress- ing, hosting, and cashiering many restaurants before I joined the corporate world. I witnessed the many working parts it takes in order to operate a successful business. Through these experiences, I have learned so much about the business world as well as myself. In my spare time, I really enjoy trying new food around town. I am a foodie so I pretty much try and like everything. I like to stay active as well, after all the food I eat, I like to work it off at the gym. By visiting the gym daily, it keeps me healthy and stress free which I believe is very important. With this upcoming semester, I hope you really enjoy your time, get involved on campus, make many new friends, and I’ll be here if you have any questions about anything at all! • 3. New Peer mentor Amy Abdelrahman | Psychology Hi, my name is Amy Abdelrahman and I am a junior at the University of Colora- do Denver. I am currently majoring in Psychology for the Bachelor of Arts while double minoring in Ethnic Studies and Communications. I am in Psi Chi, an in- ternational honor society for Psychology majors. My plan is to graduate a semes- ter early in fall 2016. I enjoy my major because psychology has allowed me to truly understand myself and others by teaching me about the human mind and be- havior. Ultimately, I want to go to graduate school to become a counselor special- izing with at risk youth. I love the concept of the mind and body being so connected with one another which is why in my spare time I participate in yoga and hiking. I also enjoy doing volunteer work in Elementary Schools and Ani- mal Hospitals. I have been involved in schools a lot, as I have been a preschool teacher’s aid, a TA for the pre-collegiate summer high school program, and I tutor kindergarten children in English. TRiO has given me so many opportunities such as finding internships, helping me figure out my major and overall just answering questions about college in general. I hope to give this back to all my mentees, come by the office so we can dis- cuss any questions, comments, or concerns you may have. New Peer mentor Kevin Li | Public Health (Pre-Pharmacy) Hello everyone, I will be starting my junior year at the University of Colorado Denver. Some of you may be familiar with me because I worked as a front office staff for TRiO SSS for many semesters, but now I am transitioning to the peer mentor position! I have found TRiO SSS to be a great support system for me, especially with all the help from my previous peer mentors and now I wish to do the same for other students. My major is Public Health and I am also on a pre-pharmacy track. In addition, I am very involved on campus and in my community. I am on the executive board for the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) and the Society of TRiO Students Club (STS). SASE is an organization that prepares students for the professional workplace. The purpose of the Society of TRiO Students Club is to enhance and support aca- demic services and promote cultural and social development. In addition, I am also a participant of the Public Health Club, the Pre-Pharmacy Club and the Council of Asian Student Leaders Club. I am also a participant of the Reisher Scholars Program, the Colorado Collegiate Health Professions Development (CO-HPD) Scholars Program and the Alternative Breaks program. In my free time I enjoy hiking, playing tennis and trying new food! Feel free to come ask me about any questions regarding classes, clubs, or anything. Page 3THE PILLAR

  • 7. Director’s corner Hello TRiO students, Welcome to a new and hopefully, wonderful semester for all of you! We in the TRiO SSS office are looking forward to hearing all about your summer activities. We know that some of you had some awesome summer study abroad experiences, some of you had great summer internships, some of you travelled on your own and some of you stayed home to attend school or work, we want to hear all about that, so come in soon and catch us up on your lives. Whether you have good or bad news, we are here to help you and to be your cheerleaders and advocates. On another note, we received very good news this summer in the TRiO SSS Office. We are re-funded for another 5 years, Woo Hoo! All our efforts are paying off and we will be able to continue serving you. Come and see us as soon as you can. You will be getting email messages from your mentor (who may be new) when the semester begins, and your Coordinator soon, so be on the lookout for that. We have a lot of great workshops already scheduled for fall 2015, so set up your time management plan now and schedule yourself to attend these early in the semester before you get bogged down with classes. If you think you might need tutoring for a particular class, come see the staff in the Learning Resources Center (LRC) in Student Commons, suite 2105 before the semester begins, as the schedule fills up quickly. As a TRiO SSS participant, you get extra tutoring time, so take ad- vantage of that service and also SI for the science classes. If you haven’t already done this, check your portal to see if your financial aid is set for the semester. If you see some discrepancies in your award package, come and see us in the TRiO SSS Office first and we will see if we can help you straighten it out before we send you through the long lines in the financial aid office. For those of you who completed all your requirements for the TRiO SSS Book Scholarship, your award for fall semester should show up in your financial aid portal. The Book Scholarship is part of your financial aid, so it will not be disbursed ahead of time. If you are eligible for a refund after census date, your scholarship funds will be a part of that refund. As we begin a new semester, start by setting a goal for yourself of completing all your requirements for the Book Scholarship and getting the best grades possible. One of the requirements is completion of a financial literacy session. You can do that in different ways, one is by completing an in-class financial literacy session. These sessions will be shown in the monthly newsletter calendar in green print, the color of money. These in class sessions do not count as a workshop. You may complete as many sessions as you like, but we are only counting one as completion of a financial literacy session. You will need to complete 2 other types of work- shops for that part of the completion requirement for the book scholarship. Another way to complete a financial literacy session is to complete one online through College in Colorado on the Money 101 website at: www.cicmoney101.org. I will send you more in- formation in a couple of weeks on how to join the UCD_TRiO_SSS_2015-16 group, which you must do in order for the session to count. If you already completed all the Money 101 sessions, you can complete a couple of CashCourse online sessions. I will send you that information by email as well, or you can come and see me to complete a paper and pencil financial literacy course. Below is the complete list of Book Scholarship requirements for fall 2015. Best of luck! CRITERIA FOR STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES BOOK SCHOLARSHIPS To be awarded 2 times per year to active TRiO SSS participants (Fall – Spring).
