OK, so PowerPoint leads to brain fart’s when it is used incorrectly. Ream's and reams of text in a presentation are bad for lecturer’s trying to make a class interesting and inspiring, but good for students when they are trying to revise. Similarly, inspiring, visually beautiful and stimulating slides do not aide students as well when they are trying to cram for exams. Is there a happy medium of combining the two together, slides that are good for class and notes that are good for study and revision? There may be a way, use the slide content for the interesting insightful stuff and the ‘Notes’ field at the bottom of the slide for the reams of text. Images/ Diagram’s/ etc, that are valuable to communicating the content as opposed to a visual queue can be referenced in the notes at the to point students to the diagram in the slide. This does incentivize students to be lazy though as the lecture is giving them both their cake and helping them eat it. This is a problem that every lecturer will face and is further complicated by students for whatever reason being absent from class, etc. Re-enforcement of learning content can be achieved in other ways though, e.g. giving students an assignment of summarizing a set of slides and notes in Cornell notes format. Certainly not perfect but possibly an option for educators.
