Solutions City - Overview for Employers
1. Mayor Kevin Johnson + Starbucks Coffee Company + Sacramento’s Business Community
Solutions City
Solutions City is a partnership of employers, educators, and service organizations, led by Mayor
Kevin Johnson and the Starbucks Coffee Company, to build career on-ramps for veterans and
disengaged youth in the Greater Sacramento region.
THE CHALLENGE
Veterans – 1 million veterans will be returning home over the next two years and will be
looking for work.
Opportunity Youth – 5.8 million (14.8%) of teens & young adults (age 16-24) are neither
working nor in school.
THE SOLUTION
Solutions City leverages job training and employment programs with new commitments from
employers to hire returning veterans and disengaged youth.
Employers – Mayor Johnson is building a coalition of employers who commit to hiring a
specific number of veterans and/or opportunity youth between now and 2016.
Job-seekers – A coalition of educators and service organizations will recruit and manage the
veterans and youth to prepare them for employability and match them with new
opportunities.
JOIN THE COALITION
Can your business commit to hire a specific number of veterans and/or opportunity youth in
2015? If so, you’re ready for Solutions City!
TOWN HALLS
Solutions City is a year-long series of town hall events where Mayor Johnson engages
stakeholders and community members to discuss the challenges and opportunities, share best
practices, and announce progress.
Our final town hall will take place in late May / early June in Sacramento, location TBD.

Solutions City
BACKGROUND
Nationally
Solutions City is an initiative of Starbucks and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Under the
leadership of Mayor Kevin Johnson, President of USCM, the initiative is being piloted in five
cities currently (Baltimore, Columbus, Orlando, Phoenix, and Sacramento). Throughout the
course of the pilot, participating Mayors convene town hall events in different Starbucks stores
in their respective cities, and share best practices and lessons learned across cities.
At the pilot’s conclusion in June 2015, Starbucks will open a Community Store in each
participating city, dedicating a share of store revenue to the implementation of Solutions City-
developed strategies.
Locally
Solutions City is aiming to create jobs anywhere in the six-county Greater Sacramento region.
Mayor Johnson launched Solutions City in August 2014 with a kick-off town hall in downtown
Sacramento. That launch event was followed in October with a second town hall in midtown.
Following this outreach and stakeholder planning, Mayor Johnson gave an update on Solutions
City in his State of the City Address and set a goal of creating 1,000 jobs for veterans and
opportunity youth before the end of 2015.
To achieve that goal, Solutions City is striving to secure commitments for 1,000 jobs by June,
and the coalition has already made progress:
At the November 2014 town hall event, five employers stepped up and pledged to
collectively hire 115 veterans or opportunity youth.
At the February 2015 town hall, seven employers pledged to collectively hire 222.
And at the March 2015 town hall, four employers pledged to collectively hire 316.
The Mayor will host a final town hall in late May / early June, where we will hit the 1,000-jobs
mark. Also at that town hall, the Solutions City coalition will formally adopt a Solutions City
Action Plan to guide our Community Store and initiative going forward.
