Dear Saurabh Shakya:
This is to verify that you have completed the four-module online course entitled “Business Ethics for the
Real World” offered in 2018 by Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California, USA, and Santa Clara’s
Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. The course was provided through Canvas Network, a platform for
massive open online courses (MOOCs).
“Business Ethics for the Real World” was taught by Kirk O. Hanson, Executive Director of the Markkula
Center for Applied Ethics, and the John Courtney Murray, S.J. University Professor of Social Ethics at
Santa Clara University.
This course included short lectures, business ethics cases that participants discussed on an online
discussion board, exercises designed to encourage students to reflect on their own values and ethics,
and quizzes. Students wrote an essay using tools of ethical analysis to examine ethical issues in a
business case.
To receive this letter of completion, students were required to complete the four quizzes and write the
“Ethics Analysis” paper in the final week, achieving a grade of at least 70% for these assignments. In
addition, students posted comments on business ethics cases presented for discussion, completed two
exercises assessing their own values, and peer reviewed three fellow students’ final Ethics Analysis
papers.
The material covered in this course constitutes approximately the first 25% of what is covered in a
conventional quarter-length business ethics course at the MBA level.
Completion of this course does not confer any academic credit from Santa Clara University and this
letter does not certify any specific level of competence in the material covered.
Thank you for participating in and completing this course.
Sincerely,
Executive Director and
John Courtney Murray, S.J., University Professor of Social Ethics
