1. WHAT DRINKING WATER STANDARDS APPLY TO
PACKAGED DRINKING WATER ?
What Standards for Bottled Water in India?
In India, we call it “Packaged Dinking Water” as per the B.I.S. Norms.
So, what is B.I.S.?
The BIS stands for the Bureau of Indian Standards. It is a Government Body,
which issues ISI License to various products in India. Packaged Drinking Water
Manufacturing is Licensed under that. In Other words, One has to get an ISI license
if he decides to manufacture water sold in Bottles, Jars or Pouches etc.
What Are the Standards like?
They are huge, but you can have a detailed list of all at the BIS Site. Packaged
drinking Water is classified under IS : 14543 .But to cut short, if you wish to have a
quick look at the important links , Visit This Page …

How difficult or easy it is to apply & get BIS License?
Well, this is a tricky question. As you know, if you should satisfy
government norms in any way , you need to do it with a lot of patience. In the end ,
the whole thing will pay off. Once you get a license, you are authorized to sell

Can someone manufacture without the ISI license?
As per the ISI Drinking Water Standards, NO. But there are ways people find
to do such things like supplying water without labels etc. But according to me , is
not a professional way.
For a mineral water plant [packaged drinking plant] , Do I need to hire a
consultant for this job or I can do it on my own?
Better hire a Turnkey contractor. He has links to the consultants. They will
make your life easy. But that does not mean that you should not do anything. In
fact you should appoint one Co-coordinator who will work with you, the BIS,
consultant & the turnkey supplier , so that you complete your work in time.
In fact, In our Online Training Course for Packaged drinking water Plant
[ http://mineralwaterprojectinformation.org/exp-sw/], we have a special software ,
which gives you correct dates to follow once you insert a start date.
Anyway, all in all , it might have been clear what standards need to be followed for
a packaged drinking water plant.
