5. Social Learning Theory
There are three factors that contribute to behavior
change.
● Cognitive factors are gained from personal experiences
such as your attitude, expectations or prior knowledge.
● Environmental factors exist from social norms and the
ability and the access to influence others in community.
● Behavioral factors are gained from repetition and the
belief that a person is capable of changing or modifying
behavior.
In order for behavior change to occur a person must:
● Believe that they are capable of changing behavior
● The positives of the change must outweigh the negatives
● Benefits of the change must be valued.
6. Social Learning Theory as
Applied to Art Force Experience
-Environmental Factors-
Most Americans accept and trust the medical
community and are highly influenced by their
actions and information the produce.
-Cognitive Factors-
A person feels a certain way about a piece
of art because of their experience, their
attitude and their knowledge
-Behavioral Factors-
Emphasis within the health community that
positive thought and self-efficacy are
important to the healing process.

Editor's Notes
Hello. I am Sarah Garramone and my LINCS experience was with an art consulting firm in Minneapolis called Corporate Art Force.
Art Force’s mission is to become the premier source of artwork nationally through creating environments that effectively translate their client’s identities with artwork and other visual elements.
The objective of my LINCS experience was to gain insight into how art affects the health of patients, staff and visitors at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet MN.
The objective of my LINCS experience was to gain insight into how art affects the health of patients, staff and visitors at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet MN.
I chose the Social Learning Theory, developed by psychologist, Bandura.
There are three factors that contribute to behavior change. Cognitive factors are gained from personal experiences such as your attitude, expectations or prior knowledge. Environmental factors exist from social norms and the ability and the access to influence others in community. Behavioral factors are gained from repetition and the belief that a person is capable of changing or modifying behavior. In order for behavior change to occur a person must believe that they are capable of changing behavior, the positives of the change must outweigh the negatives and the benefits of the change must be valued.
Art is subjective, as is behavior. A person feels a certain way about a piece of art because of their experience, their attitude and their knowledge; environmental factors. Today, there is more emphasis within the health community that positive thought and self-efficacy are important to the healing process, which constitutes behavioral factors. Most Americans accept and trust the medical community and are highly influenced by their actions and information the produce. Those can be considered environmental factors.
It is with those principles that the art in Community Memorial Hospital can be evaluated to discover the effect on the patient, staff, and visitors to the healthcare facility.
The area of responsibility that I gained the most experience in was responsibility 4: Conduct Evaluation and Research Related to Health Education
I did used databases to study journal articles on how art affects the health of patients and staff in a healthcare facility. I developed a survey and made it available online and in paper format in four areas throughout Community Memorial Hospital. I allowed three weeks for the data to be submitted before I collected and analyzed the results.
The greatest moment for me was the day that I met Leslie Palmer-Ross, my manager for Art Force. We arranged to meet in Cloquet and do a mock interview. We had only been speaking on the phone or through emails. She came across very genuinely and seemed very interested in my skills and experience. I felt comfortable and confident during our meeting. I also met the CEO of Cloquet Memorial Hospital, Rick Breuer. He said that he was very interested in my survey and the results. He was glad to have the research done and thanked me. I was pretty stoked.
I am not finished with the project, as I am still waiting for the surveys to be completed. I thought that it would be the best idea to allow for more time, despite the required amount of hours for my LiNCS experience being short and the completion of this assignment. I was thanked by Community Memorial Hospital and ArtForce for my dedication to the project. I was researching ArtForce’s website and found that they are hiring. I applied and am waiting to hear back. I believe that this project and all of its challenges, has been to my benefit because I gave gained experience in research and research design, it applies to both my major and my minor in a topic that I care about, and it gave me the opportunity to network with people outside of Duluth. I have recently found out about an opportunity to intern with the University of Florida researching arts and health journal articles that I will be applying for this summer.
