1. USD vs. Santa Clara: The game begins!
It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon on March 24th
when one of the best lacrosse games I’ve ever
been to took place at Manchester field. It was a competition between two titan teams: Santa Clara
University versus our very own University of San Diego Men’s Lacrosse team. I had managed games
like these before, but never have I seen such a large audience for a Sports Club game, especially at the
start of Spring Break. Immediately there were over 50 people eagerly awaiting the start of the contest and
throughout the game it grew to over 100 audience members, with equal amounts supporting both Santa
Clara and USD. As the game began, it seemed like we weren’t in good shape; Santa Clara took charge,
scoring multiple goals before a good shot was made by our own team. USD was frazzled and knew they
had to make a change in order to get this game back on their side. The contest was quick, the temperature
grew warmer,
and the audience
began to get
louder and
louder. The next
thing you knew,
the first half was
up. Down by a
couple points,
USD knew they
could catch up
and possibly
surpass their
hardworking
opponents, they
just needed to
get themselves
together and
push harder
than before. And that’s exactly what they did.
When the whistle blew to sound the start of the next quarter, USD came out with sticks blazing,
tying the score up almost immediately. This half would be a completely different show. The no-longer-
so-confident Santa Clara began to commit more and more penalties as frustrations grew for the once
leading team in this lacrosse game. USD would score one to get ahead and then Santa Clara would come
back just to tie it up again. This was an amazing matchup that ended in a hard-earned tie of 8 - 8, but
each side was eager for the win. Both teams came together for one final meeting, one final strategic
gathering of the minds; this would be crucial in gearing up the teams for a potential victory. Would USD
make the struggle to get back on top worth it? Would Santa Clara take back their lead to end the game as
it had started? Only time would tell. Four minutes of time, that is.
The teams faced off for this allotted amount of time, with the first team to score being named the
victor of this intense faceoff of athletic prowess. Right from the start of this period, many close shots
were made by both teams, but none were secure. Tensions were high and the audience was getting
nervous as they knew there had to be a victor. Finally it happened! USD got the ball, Santa Clara
following their every move, every player watching with hawk-eyes,when our team made their
shot…GOAL! The University of San Diego Men’s Lacrosse team had won one of the most nail-biting
games yet with a score of 9 – 8 finishing in overtime! The crowd erupted and so did the players.
Congratulation hugs and hollers were all over the place while the losing team solemnly walked off the
field that had now become a platform for celebration. That was a Sports Club game I am unlikely to
forget and I am so amazed by our Men’s Lacrosse team for showing everyone there that day what exactly
they’re about. Congratulations MLAX, that showdown alone is something to be proud of!
