MODAL VERBS
 ¿What is a modal verb?
It’s a verb used with another verb to express an idea such as possibility that
is not expressed by the main verb.
Example
HAVE TO / MUST
 We use have to or must when we talk about OBLIGATIONS.
EXAMPLE: -You have to download this programme in your computer!
-You must turn off your mobile pone when you are in class!
 We use do not have to or mustn’t when we talk about PROHIBITIONS.
EXAMPLE: -You don’t have to finish it now!
-You mustn’t sleep with your mobile pone next-to your head!
CAN
 We use can when we talk about ABILITIES and PERMISSIONS in the present.
EXAMPLES: -You can upload pictures with this app.
 We use can not to talk about PROHIBITIONS or things that we can not do in the
present .
EXAMPLES: -You can not use the mobile phone in class.
COULD
 We use could when we talk about ABILITIES and PERMISSIONS in the past.
EXAMPLES: -You could search information on the internet.
 We use could not to talk about PROHIBITIONS or things that we could not do in
the past.
EXAMPLES: -You could not drive when we were using the mobile phone.
WILL BE ABLE TO
 We use will be able to when we talk about ABILITIES and PERMISSIONS in the future.
EXAMPLES: -You will be able to have curved mobile phones.
 We use won’t be able to, to talk about PROHIBITIONS or things that we won’t be able
to do in the future.
EXAMPLES: -In the future we won’t be able to live without electronical objects.
NEED TO
 We use need to for express a NECESSITY.
EXAMPLES: -You need to charge the mobile phone.
ALLOW SOMEBODY TO/ BE
ALLOWED TO
 We use allow somebody to when we talk about LET SOMETHING happen or be done.
EXAMPLES: -You allow the students to use the mobile phone to search information.
 We use be allowed to talk about RULES, AUTHORIZATIONS and PERMISSIONS.
EXAMPLES: -You are allowed to enter in this web.
SHOULD /OUGHT TO
 We use should when we want to talk of our OPINION on the OBLIGATION and
ADVICE.
EXAMPLES: -You should leave the social networks for a long time.

 We use ought to when we want to talk about the DUTY, the RULES and the
MORAL OBLIGATIONS.
EXAMPLES: -You ought to update the device.
