COVID-19 Safe Workplace Checklist
AstheGovernmentandNIExecutivecontemplateeasingCOVID-19relatedworkplacerestrictions,
employersmuststartconsideringhowbesttocopewithanarrayofissuesincludinghowtorestart
operations,reconfiguretheworkplace,reintegrateremote-workingorfurloughedemployees,
implementnewsafeworkingpractices,ensureon-goingcompliancetosocialdistancingmeasuresetc.
Employerswhoproactivelyplanforthesechallengeswillbebestpositionedtoadapttothe“newnormal”.
Whilenotexhaustivethischecklistisfocusedonhelpingemployersidentifypracticalmeasurestoconsider
inordertomaketheirworkplacesafe.Youmust,ofcourse,ensurethatyourbusinessiscomplyingwithall
thelatestguidance,rulesandrestrictionsonwhenandhowitcanoperate.Wethereforesuggestthatyou
completethischecklistintandemwithreadingtheguidancebelowandanyotherguidancethatisrelevant

1. Elimination
Redesignthejob,workplaceorworkflowsothatthehazardisremoved
oreliminated.Forexample,createone-wayflowsandmovetables,desks,
equipmenttorespectrespectthesocialdistancingrequirements.
2. Substitution
Replacethematerial,processorpracticewithalesshazardousone.
Careshouldbetakentoensurethealternativeissaferthantheoriginal.
3. Engineering Controls
Useequipmentorothermeanstocontrolrisk.Separatethehazardfrom
workersbymethodssuchasenclosing,guarding,screeningetc.
4. Administrative Controls
Reducethetimeemployeesareexposedtothehazard.Forexample,
jobrotation,splitshifts,staggerstart/finishtimes/breaksetc.,
increasesafetysignageandperformingregularriskassessments.
5. Personal Protective
Clothing and Equipment
PPEshouldnotbeyourstartingpoint.Ifchosen,PPEshouldbeselected
andfittedbythepersonwhousesit.Yourpeoplemustbetrainedinthe
correctfunctionandlimitationsofeachitemofPPE,including-correct
donninganddoffing.
Hierarchy of Risk
Risksshouldbereducedtothelowestreasonablypracticablelevelbytakingpreventativemeasures.
