I haveknown the applicant,Mr SandorFoldvari, sincethe early nineties,whenhe signedup for a
postgraduatedoctoratecourse at the Institute of Slavic Studiesof (then) Kossuth University of
Debrecen.Sincethen Mr. Foldvari has acquirednational and internationalfame as an outstanding
expertat Sl.avicphilology. His contributionto the surveyanddescriptionof earlySlavicprintedbooks
in variousHungarianlibraries is of a very high professionalquality. He haspublishedwidely in
prestigiousHungarianand foreign periodicals and is a regular participant at conferencesboth in
Hungaryandabroad.What makeshim also a remarkablescholaris that he is oneof the very few
philologistsin Hungarywho arewell trainedin Baltic languages,i.e. LithuanianandLatvian,which
hehasalsobeenteachingfor yearsto studentsof the Facultyof Arts of our university.He hasavery
good commandof Russian,Lithuanian, and Latvian, and at internationalconferenceshe usually
delivershis papersin English.In additionto this, hehasrecentlycompletedwork on a monographon
thereceptionof Europeancultureby the GreekCatholicRusynsin theAge of theEnlightement.This
researchwassupportedby theHungarianAcademyof Sciences.
