1. Computer
A computer is a machine or device
• that performs processes
• calculations
• operations based on instructions provided by a
software or hardware program
• It has the ability to accept data (input), process
it, and then produce outputs.
2.
3.
4.
5. Keyboard
• It is a text base input device that allows the user to input
alphabets, numbers and other characters.
• It consists of a set of keys mounted on a board.
Alphanumeric keys:
• It consists of keys for English alphabets, 0 to 9 numbers, and
special characters like + − / * () etc.
Function keys:
• There are twelve function keys labeled as F1, F2, F3, F4 …F12.
• The functions assigned to these keys differ from one software
package to other. These keys are also user programmable keys.
6. Numeric keypad:
• Numeric keypad is located on the right side of the
keyboard
• It consists of keys having numbers (0 to 9) and
mathematical operators (+ − * /) defined on them.
• This keypad is provided to support quick entry for
numeric data.
Cursor movement keys:
• These are arrow keys and are used to move the cursor in
the direction indicated by the arrow (up, down, left,
right).
7. KEYS Functions
Enter Used to return key and execute a command
or program
Spacebar It is used to enter a space
Backspace It is used to move the cursor one position to
left and also delete the character
Delete Used to delete the character like
alphabet,table and picture
Insert Used to toggle between insert and overwrite
mode during data entry
Cntrl Used in conjunction with other keys to
provide additional functional keyboard
Alt It is like control key, used in combination
with other keys to perform specific task
8. Mouse
mouse is the most popular device used pointing input device.
Structure
The front of mouse casing contains one wheel and 2 or 3 buttons. The
bottom of a mouse is flat and contains a mechanism that detect the
movement of mouse.
Example
An object on the screen is selected by clicking the left button of the mouse.
A program or folder is open by double clicking the left button of the mouse.
Function
It is used to control the cursor or pointer on the screen and to give
commands to the computer.
A mouse also allows the user to create graphics such as lines, curves and
freehand shapes.
9. Types of mouse
1. Mechnical Mouse
2. Optical Mouse
3. Wireless or cordless Mouse
4. Air Mouse
5. Touch Mouse
10. Joystick
The joystick is a vertical handheld lever mounted on a
base.
Structure
The lever include two or more buttons. These buttons are
called triggers. A button is used to activate an event or
action.
Function
The lever can be moved in different directions to control
the movement of the object on the screen.
It is basically used to play video games.
It is also used in computer –aided design system.
11. Scanner
Scanner can capture data directly from the source documents and store
inside the computer in digital form.
The source documents may include price pr inventory tags, paychecks,
brochures, order forms, answer sheets, and photos.
Types of scanner
1. Optical scanner
2. Flatbed scanner
3. Handheld scanner
4. Sheetfed scanner
5. Drum scanner
12. Pen input devices:
Pen input devices looks like pens. These
devices are used in some computing devices
for giving input. The users touches a Pen
input device on a touch screen to write or
draw or make selections.
Stylus:
Stylus is a small input device that looks like a
ballpoint pen. It is made of metal or plastic.
They are used in many other mobile devices.
Digital pen:
It is similar to a Stylus but is highly large than
Stylus. It also provides more functionality
than Stylus. A digital pen is called pen.
13. Types of scanner:
Flatbed scanner:
A Flatbed scanner is also known as image
scanner. It scans a full image of the
document at a time. It works like photocopy
machine.
Handheld scanner:
A Handheld scanner is called a pen scanner. It
is a small Handheld scanning device. It works
in a same way as we use marker highlighter.
Sheet-fed scanner:
A type of scanner that scans only a piece of
paper at a time. It can scans photos ,letters
forms ,businesses cards.
14. Output devices:
The data processed into a useful form is called
output. The users can view the output on screen
or print into on the paper through a printer or
store it in the disk into the file .
Classification:
Softcopy output:
The output viewed on the display screen is
called softcopy output. The output in the form
of audio video is known as softcopy output. The
kind of type is not tangible.
Hard copy Output:
The output printed on the paper is hardcopy
print. It may be in the form of text and graphics.
The commonly are printers and plotters.
15. Monitors:
A Monitor is a commonly used output device
on personal computers. It display device or
simply display. It is used as softcopy output
devices.
Features:
1.The size of monitor is measured in inches.
2.The display screens can be either color or
monochrome. The color display screen
shows different colours.
3.The resolution refers to sharpness and
clearness of image
4.The distance between pixels on the
monitor screen is called dot pitch. It is
measured in millimetres.
16. Printers:
Printers are the most commonly used output
devices. They are used to print documents
on the papers. The output printed on the
paper is called Hardcopy. The Hardcopy is
also called a printout. The outputs may be in
the forms of characters, symbols and
graphics. The printout resolution is measured
in dots per inch.
Types of printers:
1. Impact Printer
2. Non-Impact Printer
17. Difference betweenimpact and non-impact printer
Parameter Impact Printer Non-Impact Printer
Definition Impact printers create pictures and
figures by hitting a device such as a wheel
or a print hammer against an inked
ribbon.
Non-impact printers create figures and pictures
without
any connection between the printing device and
the paper.
Mechanism In impact printers, printing is executed by
hammering a character dye or metal pin.
In non-impact printers, printing is executed by
dropping ink on paper in any manner.
Speed Of
Printers
Impact printers are low in terms of speed. Non-impact printers are comparatively fast in
speed.
Technology They utilize traditional printing
technologies.
They utilize contemporary printing
technologies
Value They are pretty affordable. They are quite expensive as compared to
impact printers.
18. Plotter
Plotter is a computer hardware device much like a
printer that is used for printing vector graphics.
Instead of toner, plotters use a pen, pencil, marker,
or another writing tool to draw multiple, continuous
lines on paper rather than multiple dots, like a
traditional printer.
Types:
Flatbed Plotter
Flatbed plotter is a computerized plotter that works
using an arm that moves a pen over paper
Drum plotter
The plotter was the first output device to print
graphics and large engineering drawings.
19. Speaker
Computer Speaker is an output hardware
device that connects with a computer to
generate a sound. It converts electrical
energy into mechanical energy. The
signal is used to produce sound and
comes from a computer speaker. It is
made from the sound card of the
computer. IBM built the first internal
computer in 1981, which did not have
good sound quality
20. Headphones
Sometimes called earphones,
headphones are a hardware output
device that connect to a computer line
out or speakers port or wirelessly with
Bluetooth. Headphones allow you to
listen to audio or watch a movie without
disturbing people around you.
Headphones originally consisted of one
speaker for each ear, connected by a
band over the head.
