9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping
his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep
his commandments.

The Deceiver
Genesis 27:18-29 NASB
18 Then he came to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am.
Who are you, my son?” 19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I
have done as you told me. Get up, please, sit and eat of my game, that you
may bless me.” 20 Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have it so quickly, my
son?” And he said, “Because the Lord your God caused it to happen to me.”
21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come close, that I may feel you, my son,
whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob came close to Isaac his
father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands
are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, because his hands were
hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him. 24 And he said, “Are you
really my son Esau?” And he said, “I am.” 25 So he said, “Bring it to me, and I will
eat of my son’s game, that I may bless you.” And he brought it to him, and he
ate; he also brought him wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him,
“Please come close and kiss me, my son.” 27 So he came close and kissed him;
and when he smelled the smell of his garments, he blessed him and said,
“See, the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field which the Lord has blessed;
28 Now may God give you of the dew of Heaven,
And of the fatness of the Earth,
And an abundance of grain and new wine;
29 May peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you;
Be master of your brothers,
And may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
Cursed be those who curse you,
And blessed be those who bless you.”

The Palestinian conflict is rooted in the controversy between Esau and Jacob.
Genesis 27:8-12a NASB
8 Now therefore, my son, listen to me as I command you. 9 Go now to the flock
and bring me two choice young goats from there, that I may prepare them as a
savory dish for your father, such as he loves. 10 Then you shall bring it to your
father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.” 11 Jacob
answered his mother Rebekah, “Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man and I
am a smooth man. 12a Perhaps my father will feel me, then I will be as a deceiver
in his sight,
Jacob didn't say, "If I do this, I'll be a deceiver."
He said, "If I do this, I'll be as a deceiver."
Isn't this where our culture finds itself?
Reputation is what people think you are, and character is what you know you
are.
Most people today, like Jacob, are concerned about reputation over character.
How do you know what your character really is?
You'll know by what you do when no one is around.
Genesis 27:12b-15 NASB
12b and I will bring upon myself a curse and not a blessing.” 13 But his mother said
to him, “Your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for
me.” 14 So he went and got them, and brought them to his mother; and his
mother made savory food such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the
best garments of Esau her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put
them on Jacob her younger son.
An outdoorsman, Esau had a distinct aroma about him. Realizing this, Rebekah
put some of Esau’s garments on Jacob.
Genesis 27:16-17 NASB
16 And she put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part
of his neck. 17 She also gave the savory food and the bread, which she had
made, to her son Jacob.
Rebekah was sharp.
She took the skins of the goats and strapped them around the arms and neck of
her son, Jacob, so that if Isaac felt his skin, he’d feel like Esau.
Although Jacob didn't sound like Esau, he smelled like Esau and felt like Esau.
Therefore, he must be Esau, thought Isaac, trusting his senses rather than the
word that he heard.
Whenever we make decisions based upon what we feel or what we smell or
what we see rather than upon what we hear in the Word, we will be deceived.
If an experience, trend, or phenomena isn't seen throughout the New Testament
record of the life of Christ and of His church, it's Jacob parading as Esau, and we
will be as deceived as Isaac was if we choose to follow our senses rather than
the Word.
Genesis 27:23-25a NASB
23 He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s
hands; so he blessed him. 24 And he said, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he
said, “I am.” 25a So he said, “Bring it to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, that I
may bless you.”
A key component of Hebrew life, the blessing was pronounced by the patriarch
primarily upon the oldest son.
A declaration of who one is and a revelation of where one is headed, Orthodox
Jewish fathers understand the significance of the blessing and bestow it upon
their children to this day.
Following, we see the five elements that comprise this blessing.
Five Elements of the Jewish Blessing:
1. Meaningful Touch.
2. Spoken Words.
3. Word Pictures of High Value.
4. Picturing a Special Future.
5. A Commitment to Seeing the Blessing Fulfilled.
Genesis 27:25b-26 NASB
25b And he brought it to him, and he ate; he also brought him wine and he drank.
26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come close and kiss me, my son.”
First, the blessing involves a tender, meaningful touch.
In a study of girls who had numerous unwanted pregnancies, a common
denominator was found: they all had fathers who did not show them affection.
Consequently, they sought this missing ingredient in the arms of strangers.
A pure and tender touch upon our kids is so important.
That's why Jesus didn't call out a blanket blessing upon the children who were
brought to Him.
Mark 10:13, 16 NASB
13 And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them;
16 And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on
them.
Jesus’ final action upon the Earth was to give a blessing.
Jesus’ disciples gathered around Him on the Mount of Olives for His ascension
into Heaven.
Luke tells us: Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands He
blessed them. While He blessed them, He parted from them and was carried up
into Heaven. (Luke 24:50-51)
Genesis 27:27 MSG
27 He (Jacob) came close and kissed him and Isaac smelled the smell of his
clothes. Finally, he blessed him.
Ahhh. The smell of my son
is like the smell of the open country
blessed by God.
Secondly, the blessing includes a spoken message of valued, valuable
evaluation.
"You have the fragrance of the field. You are an outdoorsman. This is what I see
in you," said Isaac, as he affirmed Esau's strengths through the spoken blessing.
Many kids never hear their parents' perception of them.
Many parents never say, "This is what I see in you. This is how I see God made
you. This is what is great about you."
Speak a word of valuable evaluation today, Dad, for not hearing from you at all
hurts far more than hearing a word of correction from you.
Genesis 27:28-29 MSG
28-29 May God give you
of Heaven’s dew
and Earth’s bounty of grain and wine.
May peoples serve you
and nations honor you.
You will master your brothers,
and your mother’s sons will honor you.
Those who curse you will be cursed,
those who bless you will be blessed.
Thirdly, the blessing gives a word of destination.
Our kids and grandchildren need to hear not only what we see in them
presently, but what we see ahead for them eventually.
The Orthodox Jewish families understand this concept so well.
When you go into an Orthodox home, the parents will say, "Here is Joey the
doctor, and Benny the lawyer"—even though Joey and Benny are only four and
five years old.
In so doing, they are giving their kids a special future and they do indeed grow
up becoming doctors and lawyers, scientists and rabbis because that is what is
pronounced on them.
What do you see your daughter or son becoming, Dad?
Let them know!
Genesis 27:30-33 MSG
30-31 And then right after Isaac had blessed Jacob and Jacob had left, Esau
showed up from the hunt. He also had prepared a hearty meal. He came to his
father and said, “Let my father get up and eat of his son’s game, that he may
give me his personal blessing.”
32 His father Isaac said, “And who are you?”
“I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”
33 Isaac started to tremble, shaking violently. He said, “Then who hunted game
and brought it to me? I finished the meal just now, before you walked in. And I
blessed him—he’s blessed for good!”
Realizing that God will ultimately have His way, Isaac conceded that Jacob
would indeed be blessed.
Genesis 27:34a MSG
34a Esau, hearing his father’s words, sobbed violently and most bitterly,
In the Hebrew language, this is an emphatic expression describing a painful,
plaintive wail.
Here Esau, this man's man, sobs bitterly.
Genesis 27:34b-37 MSG
34b and cried to his father, “My father! Can’t you also bless me?”
35 “Your brother,” he said, “came here falsely and took your blessing.”
36 Esau said, “Not for nothing was he named Jacob, the Heel. Twice now he’s
tricked me: first he took my birthright and now he’s taken my blessing.”
He begged, “Haven’t you kept back any blessing for me?”
37 Isaac answered Esau, “I’ve made him your master, and all his brothers his
servants, and lavished grain and wine on him. I’ve given it all away. What’s left
for you, my son?”
Genesis 27:34b-37 MSG
Finally, the blessing contained a promise of continued commitment. Because it
was non-negotiable, the blessing says, "Not only do I see this in you, but I am
committed to see it through for you and am determined to stand with you
regardless of reversals, setbacks, or disappointments."
Job, the most righteous man on the face of the Earth, rose early every morning
and offered a sacrifice for each one of his sons and daughters—a lot of hard,
bloody, dirty work.
And you can do that as a dad for your kids through intercessory prayer, through
doing whatever you can to see God's power upon them and His work flowing
through them.
Genesis 27:38 MSG
38 “But don’t you have just one blessing for me, Father? Oh, bless me my father!
Bless me!” Esau sobbed inconsolably.
Even though the birthright included a double inheritance, Esau regarded it so
lightly that he traded it for a bowl of beans.
But so desperately did Esau desire the blessing, that even at seventy-seven
years of age, he wept passionately over its loss.
Maybe you're saying, "I never had a father or grandfather pronounce a blessing
on my life."
You can.
Your heavenly Father is just waiting to bless you.
He will pronounce blessing upon your life, give direction for your life, and place
His hand tenderly upon you anytime you choose to come into His presence.
Each of us has a Father Who's always there, Who is as close to us as a simple
prayer.
May God give us wisdom to bless our own kids as we declare to them who they
are and reveal to them what they can be.
And may He give us the desire to continually seek His blessing upon our own
lives.

The Plan of Hope & Salvation
John 3:16 NASB
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
John 14:6 NASB
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to
the Father but through me.”
Romans 3:23 NASB
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23a NASB
23a For the wages of sin is death,
• Death in this life (the first death) is 100%.
• Even Jesus, the one who doesn’t deserve death, died in this life to pay the
penalty for our sins.
• The death referred to in Romans 6:23a is the second death explained in
Revelation 21:8.
Revelation 21:8 NASB
8 “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and
immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the
lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Romans 6:23b NASB
23b but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 5:8 NASB
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for
us.
Revelation 21:7 NASB
7 “He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be
My son.”
• Romans 10:9-10 explains to us how to be overcomers.
Romans 10:9-10 NASB
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that
God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person
believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in
salvation.
Romans 10:13 NASB
13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

12-02-18, Genesis 27;18-29, The Deceiver

  • 1. Genesis 27:18-29 The Deceiver December 2, 2018 First Baptist Church Jackson, Mississippi USA What’s the number one thing? https://www.allenschool.edu/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/number-1.jpg The Glory of God! http://www.thecitychurch.org.uk/sites/default/files/glory-god.jpg 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV 31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. http://www.nmnewsandviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/glory-of-God.jpg
  • 2. December Memory Verse Deuteronomy 7:9 NIV 9 Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. Genesis 27:18-29 The Deceiver Genesis 27:18-29 NASB 18 Then he came to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” 19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you told me. Get up, please, sit and eat of my game, that you may bless me.” 20 Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have it so quickly, my son?” And he said, “Because the Lord your God caused it to happen to me.” 21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come close, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob came close to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him. 24 And he said, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he said, “I am.” 25 So he said, “Bring it to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, that I may bless you.” And he brought it to him, and he ate; he also brought him wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come close and kiss me, my son.” 27 So he came close and kissed him; and when he smelled the smell of his garments, he blessed him and said, “See, the smell of my son Is like the smell of a field which the Lord has blessed; 28 Now may God give you of the dew of Heaven, And of the fatness of the Earth, And an abundance of grain and new wine; 29 May peoples serve you, And nations bow down to you; Be master of your brothers, And may your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be those who curse you, And blessed be those who bless you.” Genesis 27:18-29 NASB

  • 4. The Palestinian conflict is rooted in the controversy between Esau and Jacob. Genesis 27:8-12a NASB 8 Now therefore, my son, listen to me as I command you. 9 Go now to the flock and bring me two choice young goats from there, that I may prepare them as a savory dish for your father, such as he loves. 10 Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.” 11 Jacob answered his mother Rebekah, “Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man and I am a smooth man. 12a Perhaps my father will feel me, then I will be as a deceiver in his sight, Jacob didn't say, "If I do this, I'll be a deceiver." He said, "If I do this, I'll be as a deceiver." Isn't this where our culture finds itself?
  • 5. Reputation is what people think you are, and character is what you know you are. Most people today, like Jacob, are concerned about reputation over character. How do you know what your character really is? You'll know by what you do when no one is around. Genesis 27:12b-15 NASB 12b and I will bring upon myself a curse and not a blessing.” 13 But his mother said to him, “Your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me.” 14 So he went and got them, and brought them to his mother; and his mother made savory food such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the best garments of Esau her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. An outdoorsman, Esau had a distinct aroma about him. Realizing this, Rebekah put some of Esau’s garments on Jacob.
  • 6. Genesis 27:16-17 NASB 16 And she put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 She also gave the savory food and the bread, which she had made, to her son Jacob. Rebekah was sharp. She took the skins of the goats and strapped them around the arms and neck of her son, Jacob, so that if Isaac felt his skin, he’d feel like Esau. Although Jacob didn't sound like Esau, he smelled like Esau and felt like Esau. Therefore, he must be Esau, thought Isaac, trusting his senses rather than the word that he heard. Whenever we make decisions based upon what we feel or what we smell or what we see rather than upon what we hear in the Word, we will be deceived. If an experience, trend, or phenomena isn't seen throughout the New Testament record of the life of Christ and of His church, it's Jacob parading as Esau, and we will be as deceived as Isaac was if we choose to follow our senses rather than the Word. Genesis 27:23-25a NASB 23 He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him. 24 And he said, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he said, “I am.” 25a So he said, “Bring it to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, that I may bless you.” A key component of Hebrew life, the blessing was pronounced by the patriarch primarily upon the oldest son.
  • 7. A declaration of who one is and a revelation of where one is headed, Orthodox Jewish fathers understand the significance of the blessing and bestow it upon their children to this day. Following, we see the five elements that comprise this blessing. Five Elements of the Jewish Blessing: 1. Meaningful Touch. 2. Spoken Words. 3. Word Pictures of High Value. 4. Picturing a Special Future. 5. A Commitment to Seeing the Blessing Fulfilled. Genesis 27:25b-26 NASB 25b And he brought it to him, and he ate; he also brought him wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come close and kiss me, my son.” First, the blessing involves a tender, meaningful touch. In a study of girls who had numerous unwanted pregnancies, a common denominator was found: they all had fathers who did not show them affection. Consequently, they sought this missing ingredient in the arms of strangers. A pure and tender touch upon our kids is so important. That's why Jesus didn't call out a blanket blessing upon the children who were brought to Him.
  • 8. Mark 10:13, 16 NASB 13 And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; 16 And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them. Jesus’ final action upon the Earth was to give a blessing. Jesus’ disciples gathered around Him on the Mount of Olives for His ascension into Heaven. Luke tells us: Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up His hands He blessed them. While He blessed them, He parted from them and was carried up into Heaven. (Luke 24:50-51) Genesis 27:27 MSG 27 He (Jacob) came close and kissed him and Isaac smelled the smell of his clothes. Finally, he blessed him. Ahhh. The smell of my son is like the smell of the open country blessed by God. Secondly, the blessing includes a spoken message of valued, valuable evaluation. "You have the fragrance of the field. You are an outdoorsman. This is what I see in you," said Isaac, as he affirmed Esau's strengths through the spoken blessing. Many kids never hear their parents' perception of them. Many parents never say, "This is what I see in you. This is how I see God made you. This is what is great about you." Speak a word of valuable evaluation today, Dad, for not hearing from you at all hurts far more than hearing a word of correction from you.
  • 9. Genesis 27:28-29 MSG 28-29 May God give you of Heaven’s dew and Earth’s bounty of grain and wine. May peoples serve you and nations honor you. You will master your brothers, and your mother’s sons will honor you. Those who curse you will be cursed, those who bless you will be blessed. Thirdly, the blessing gives a word of destination. Our kids and grandchildren need to hear not only what we see in them presently, but what we see ahead for them eventually. The Orthodox Jewish families understand this concept so well. When you go into an Orthodox home, the parents will say, "Here is Joey the doctor, and Benny the lawyer"—even though Joey and Benny are only four and five years old. In so doing, they are giving their kids a special future and they do indeed grow up becoming doctors and lawyers, scientists and rabbis because that is what is pronounced on them. What do you see your daughter or son becoming, Dad? Let them know!
  • 10. Genesis 27:30-33 MSG 30-31 And then right after Isaac had blessed Jacob and Jacob had left, Esau showed up from the hunt. He also had prepared a hearty meal. He came to his father and said, “Let my father get up and eat of his son’s game, that he may give me his personal blessing.” 32 His father Isaac said, “And who are you?” “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.” 33 Isaac started to tremble, shaking violently. He said, “Then who hunted game and brought it to me? I finished the meal just now, before you walked in. And I blessed him—he’s blessed for good!” Realizing that God will ultimately have His way, Isaac conceded that Jacob would indeed be blessed. Genesis 27:34a MSG 34a Esau, hearing his father’s words, sobbed violently and most bitterly, In the Hebrew language, this is an emphatic expression describing a painful, plaintive wail. Here Esau, this man's man, sobs bitterly. Genesis 27:34b-37 MSG 34b and cried to his father, “My father! Can’t you also bless me?” 35 “Your brother,” he said, “came here falsely and took your blessing.” 36 Esau said, “Not for nothing was he named Jacob, the Heel. Twice now he’s tricked me: first he took my birthright and now he’s taken my blessing.” He begged, “Haven’t you kept back any blessing for me?”

What’s left for you, my son?” Genesis 27:34b-37 MSG Finally, the blessing contained a promise of continued commitment. Because it was non-negotiable, the blessing says, "Not only do I see this in you, but I am committed to see it through for you and am determined to stand with you regardless of reversals, setbacks, or disappointments." Job, the most righteous man on the face of the Earth, rose early every morning and offered a sacrifice for each one of his sons and daughters—a lot of hard, bloody, dirty work. And you can do that as a dad for your kids through intercessory prayer, through doing whatever you can to see God's power upon them and His work flowing through them. Genesis 27:38 MSG 38 “But don’t you have just one blessing for me, Father? Oh, bless me my father! Bless me!” Esau sobbed inconsolably. Even though the birthright included a double inheritance, Esau regarded it so lightly that he traded it for a bowl of beans. But so desperately did Esau desire the blessing, that even at seventy-seven years of age, he wept passionately over its loss.
  • 12. Maybe you're saying, "I never had a father or grandfather pronounce a blessing on my life." You can. Your heavenly Father is just waiting to bless you. He will pronounce blessing upon your life, give direction for your life, and place His hand tenderly upon you anytime you choose to come into His presence. Each of us has a Father Who's always there, Who is as close to us as a simple prayer. May God give us wisdom to bless our own kids as we declare to them who they are and reveal to them what they can be. And may He give us the desire to continually seek His blessing upon our own lives. The Plan of Hope & Salvation John 3:16 NASB 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” John 14:6 NASB 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me.” Romans 3:23 NASB 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 6:23a NASB 23a For the wages of sin is death, • Death in this life (the first death) is 100%. • Even Jesus, the one who doesn’t deserve death, died in this life to pay the penalty for our sins. • The death referred to in Romans 6:23a is the second death explained in Revelation 21:8. Revelation 21:8 NASB 8 “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Romans 6:23b NASB 23b but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 5:8 NASB 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Revelation 21:7 NASB 7 “He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.” • Romans 10:9-10 explains to us how to be overcomers. Romans 10:9-10 NASB 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
