give him rest from all his enemies on every side. His name will be Solomon,
and I will grant Israel peace and quiet during his reign. 10 He is the one
who will build a house for my Name. He will be my son, and I will be his
father. And I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.â
2. Blessed upon his birth
⢠2 Samuel 12:24-25 NIV
24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and lay
with her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. The Lord
loved him; 25 and because the Lord loved him, he sent word through
Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah.
⢠Jedidiah means âloved by the Lordâ (The blessing name for Solomon).
3. Pointed out as Israelâs king
⢠1 Chronicles 28:5-7 NIV

son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel.

sanctuary. Be strong and do the work.â
11 Then David gave his son Solomon the plans for the portico of the temple,
its buildings, its storerooms, its upper parts, its inner rooms and the place of
atonement. 12 He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his
mind for the courts of the temple of the Lord and all the surrounding
rooms, for the treasuries of the temple of God and for the treasuries for the
dedicated things.
King Solomonâs request
⢠1 Kings 3:5-15a NIV
5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream,
and God said, âAsk for whatever you want me to give you.â
6 Solomon answered, âYou have shown great kindness to your servant, my
father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in
heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him
a son to sit on his throne this very day.
7 Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my
father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out
my duties. 8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a
great people, too numerous to count or number. 9 So give your servant a
discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right
and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?â
10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to
him, âSince you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for
yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for
discernment in administering justice, 12 I will do what you have asked. I will
give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been
anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what
you have not asked forâboth wealth and honorâso that in your lifetime
you will have no equal among kings. 14 And if you walk in obedience to
me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will
give you a long life.â 15a Then Solomon awokeâand he realized it had
been a dream.
4. God blesses King Solomon
⢠1 Kings 4:29-34 NIV
29 God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of
understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. 30 Solomonâs
wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and
greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. 31 He was wiser than anyone else,
including Ethan the Ezrahiteâwiser than Heman, Kalkol and Darda, the
sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. 32 He
spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and
five. 33 He spoke about plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop
that grows out of walls. He also spoke about animals and birds, reptiles
and fish. 34 From all nations people came to listen to Solomonâs wisdom,
sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom.
The Queen of Sheba visits King Solomon
⢠1 Kings 10:1-5 NKJV
1 Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning
the name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard questions. 2 She
came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue, with camels that bore spices,
very much gold, and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon,
she spoke with him about all that was in her heart. 3 So Solomon answered
all her questions; there was nothing so difficult for the king that he could
not explain it to her. 4 And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the
wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, 5 the food on his table,
the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their apparel, his
cupbearers, and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the
Lord, there was no more spirit in her.
What is wisdom?
⢠Charles H. Spurgeon: âThe right use of knowledge.â
⢠Samuel Coleridge: âWisdom is common sense in an uncommon degree.â
⢠Cicero: âWisdom is the knowledge of things human and divine of the
causes by which those things are controlled.â

The Behavior of Belief by Spiros Zodiates
⢠Wisdom is a synonym of the Word, and it refers to that perfection and
eternity which is to be found only in God the Father, manifested to the
world through His Son, the Lord Jesus, and existing in the world today only
through the Holy Spirit. The wise man is he who has given himself to Jesus
Christ, and who, by the help of the Holy Spirit, keeps his intellect in
submission to the will of God.
5. Wisdom according to Dr. David Jeremiah
⢠In Scripture, wisdom always refers to knowledge of the course of action
that will please God and make life what God wants it to be. When God
promises wisdom, He promises a way of life that is superior to the way of
the world. He guarantees that we will find âthat good and acceptable
and perfect will of Godâ (Romans 12:2).
How does wisdom come to believers?
⢠1 Corinthians 1:30 NIV
30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us
wisdom from Godâthat is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
⢠Jesus Christ is our wisdom from God.
⢠He (wisdom) dwells in us through the Holy Spirit.
How does the believer obtain wisdom?
⢠James 1:5-6 NIV
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to
all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you
must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave
of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devilâs
schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the
rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and
against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
6. Wisdom is Depth of Understanding.

And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,
6 To understand a proverb and an enigma,
The words of the wise and their riddles.

possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear
the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and
commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.
Wisdom is Devotion to God
⢠Paul and David described manâs sinful nature as âno fear of God.â
⢠Romans 3:18 NKJV
18 âThere is no fear of God before their eyes.â
⢠Psalm 36:1 NIV
1 I have a message from God in my heart
concerning the sinfulness of the wicked:
There is no fear of God
before their eyes.
Fear of the Lord
⢠Fearing God is the starting point for godliness.
⢠This fear includes commitment to His revealed will (Godâs written Word).
⢠Fearing God means that we keep Him and His statutes as the focus and
center of our attention.
⢠Matthew Henry: âWhere no fear of God is, no good is to be expected.â
Why is fear of the Lord the beginning of knowledge and wisdom?
⢠It acknowledges that God is the creator and source of knowledge and
wisdom.
⢠It acknowledges that God is truth.
⢠If we do not keep the fear of God before our eyes, we cannot do anything
else that is pleasing to Him.
10. Apostle John describes when fear progresses to love.
⢠1 John 4:9-18 NIV
9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son
into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we
loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice
for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love
one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another,
God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of
his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to
be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son
of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on
the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is
how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on
the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in
love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with
punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
Summary of Johnâs message on fear and love
⢠As the believer grows to be like Christ (sanctification), one understands
that Christ has paid the price for their sins to God.
⢠There is no fear of Godâs judgment because genuine love confirms
salvation.
⢠The believer lives a life of service because of love for God instead of fear
of punishment.

⢠Anyone whoâs lifestyle is one or more of the sins listed in Revelation 21:8,
will experience the âsecond death,â if they do not repent.
⢠To Repent means to turn around, to go in the opposite direction, to turn
away from sin and believe in Jesus.
