INTRODUCTION
 Adaptive reuse refers to the process of reusing an old site or building for a purpose
other than which it was built or designed to
 At present, the 45 acre site at Bangshibari, Manikganj, stands at ruins which consisted of
jute mills till it was closed down in 2012
 Bengal Foundation, a platform for art, took the initiative to transform it into an artist’s
retreat to give it a taste of a secluded getaway for aspiring artists.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES
• To design a space for the creative minds of the country to share their experience and
thoughts in a serene environment where they can feel they belong to
• To increase the sense of community among the resident artists through artistic exploration
• To give the young minds a relief from the hustle and bustle of urban sprawl
• To showcase the works of prominent artists to the international audience and curious
minds of art
LITERATURE REVIEW
WHAT IS AN ARTIST?
 A person engaged in an activity related to creating
art practicing the arts or demonstrating an art.
 Clustered human settlement or community.
 Dwellings are fairly close to one another
 Usual form of community for societies
 Villages live in close proximity, thus strengthening
the bonding between them
• Create places for some human purpose
• Create extraordinary versions of ordinary objects
• Give tangible form to feelings.
• Refresh our vision, help see the world in new ways
Purpose of artist
WHAT IS A VILLAGE?
WHAT IS AN ARTIST’S VILLAGE?
 The term is used as a metaphor. It is a hub for creative minds
such as artists and sculptors, where they can gather all
together to share their knowledge and experience through their
artworks.
 Every year in Bangladesh, committed to increasing interaction,
seminars, lectures and workshop programmes that facilitate
engagement between internationally renowned arts professionals
and local communities across Bangladesh through participatory
artworks, lectures, and workshops, are held around the county.
 Residences will be provided to few artists to reside for a few days to attend biennials or
summits arranged at the site. This will help them to escape from the busy life of city and
concentrate on their artworks in a serene and tranquil environment beside the river.
 This consists of ecological maintenance and limiting architectural interventions to
the interiors and an as-needed basis, thus preserving the trees and industrial character of
the complex.
 Songzhuang Artist Residence, China

 Conserve tradition
 Establish the community’s role as a nurturer
 Share with others
 Encourage creation of environments responsive to the arts
 Uphold a positive image of Bangladesh
 Creating opportunities for artists
 Bringing the arts to the public
 Stimulating public discourse
 Creating a culture that values the arts
ADAPTIVE REUSE
 Adaptive reuse is seen as an effective way of reducing urban sprawl and environmental
impact.
 By reusing an existing structure within a site, the energy required to create these
spaces is lessened, as is the material waste that comes from destroying old sites and
rebuilding using new materials. Through adaptive reuse old, unoccupied buildings can
become suitable sites for many different types of use.
