HOW SUCCESSFUL IS SHOCKWAVE?
2. What is ESWT Or Shockwave Therapy
• Shockwave Therapy is a noninvasive method that uses acoustive waves to
treat varies musculoskeletal conditions.
• Extracorporeal = outside body.
• Shockwave = intense, short energy wave travelling faster than speed of sound.
• Well-controlled mechanical insult to tissue.
• Fast pain reliever and restore mobility.
3. History
• In 1983 the first commercial lithotripter, The Dornier Lithotripter
• Since 1985 other organs such as the gall bladder, bile duct, pancreas and
salivary glands have been treated with shockwave.
• During the next 10 years shockwave machines were trialed and have been
used to treat orthopaedic disorders, including pseudo-arthroses,
osteochondrosis and various tendinopathies (Haupt, 1997).
4. SHOCKWAVE THERAPY
• FAST AND PERMANENT RELIEF FROM PAIN
• Unique, non-invasive solution for musculoskeletal pain
• Just three to four treatments needed at weekly intervals
• A therapy session only takes about 10 minutes
• FIELDS OF APPLLIACTION
• Orthopedics
• Rehabilitation
• Sports medicine
5. MECHANISM OF ACTION
• A shockwave is an acoustic wave which carries high energy to painful spots
and myoskeletal tissues with subacute, subchronic and chronic conditions.
The energy promotes regenerating and reparative processes of the bones,
tendons and other soft tissues.
6.
7. MEDICAL EFFECTS
• Acoustic waves with high energy peak used in Shockwave therapy interact
with tissue causing overall medical effects of accelerated tissue repair and cell
growth, analgesia and mobility restoration.
• All the processes mentioned in this section are typically employed
simultaneously and are used to treat chronic, sub-acute and acute (advanced
users only) conditions.
• New Blood Vessel Formation
• Reversal of Chronic Inflammation
• Stimulation of Collagen Production
8. CONTI….
1. NEW BLOOD VESSEL FORMATION:
• Nutrient blood flow is necessary to start and maintain the repair processes of
damaged tissue. The application of acoustic waves creates capillary
microruptures in tendon and bone.
2. REVERSAL OF CHRONIC INFLAMMATION:
• Mast cells are one of the key components of the inflammatory process. Their
activity may be increased by using pervasive acoustic waves.
3. STIMULATION OF COLLAGEN PRODUCTION:
• The production of a sufficient amount of collagen is a necessary precondition
for the repair processes of the damaged myoskeletal and ligamentous
structures. Shockwave therapy accelerates procollagen synthesis.
10. Shockwave therapy has shown to effectively
treat the following conditions:
• Feet - heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis
• Elbow – tennis and golfers elbow
• Shoulder - calcific tendinosis of rotator cuff muscles
• Knee - patellar tendonitis
• Hip – bursitis
• Lower leg - shin splints
• Upper leg - Iliotibial band friction syndrome
• Back pain - lumbar and cervical spine regions and chronic muscular pain
11. Some of the benefits of shockwave therapy
treatment:
• Shockwave therapy has excellent cost/effectiveness ratio
• Non-invasive solution for chronic pain in your shoulder, back, heel, knee or
elbow
• No anesthesia required, no drugs
• Limited side effects
• Main fields of application: orthopedics, rehabilitation, and sport medicine
• New research shows that it can have a positive affect on acute pain
12. CONTRAINDICATIONS:
• Eyes
• Major Blood Vessels
• Open Wound
• Implanted Devices
• Brain
• Major Nerves
• Infection
• Cancer
• Pregnancy
• Joint replacement
• Clotting disorders
• Epiphysis
13. HOW SUCCESSFUL IS SHOCKWAVE?
• Shockwave therapy is one of the most widely researched rehabilitation
modalities used in physiotherapy clinics, with increasing numbers of
scientific studies added each year.
• The majority of research validates the effectiveness of extracorporeal
shockwave, and shows successful treatment rates of up to 90%.
