4. DEFINITION
o ESWT or Shockwave therapy is a noninvasive method that uses acoustic
waves to treat various musculoskeletal condition.
o Shockwave = intense short energy wave travelling faster than speed of
sound.

HISTORY
o In 1983 the first commercial lithotripter,the Dornier Lithotripter
o Since 1985 other organs such as the gall bladder, bile duct,
pancreas and salivary glands have been treated with shockwave.
o During the next 10 years shockwave machines were trialed and
have been used to treat orthopedic disorders, including
osteochondrosis and various tendinopathies (Haupt, 1997).

7. MECHANISM OF ACTION
o A shockwave is an acoustic wave which carries high energy to
painful spots and myoskeletal tissues with subacute, subchronic
and chronic conditions. The energy promotes regenerating and
reparative processes of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues.
