Editor's Notes
W.B. Du Bois was born as William Edward Burghardt Du Bois in Massachusetts in the year 1868. He was born free, but his great-grandfather had been a slave. His family was one of the few African Americans who owned land in Massachusetts. Du Bois was the author the Talented Tenth, co-founder of NAACP, professor, and a leader of his time.
Du Bois was the first African American to gain a Doctorate Degree at Harvard University. He was a professor at history, sociology, and economics at Atlanta University. Du Bois was a co-founder of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. The Niagara Movement helped Du Bois develop into an inspirational leader. This movement was to end racial inequality for American Africans, and in result being the catalyst toward Civil Rights Movement. During this time, African Americans faced conditions of slavery due to the Emancipation Proclamation, and needed a way to acquire a better life. (Smithsonian, n.d.)

According to Kirkpatrick and Locke (1991), Du Bois had intelligence, self-confidence, integrity, honesty, and motivation, which made him such a great leader. According to NAACP (2014), Du Bois was valedictorian of his high school class, which displays intelligence, motivation, self-confidence, and integrity.
Du Bois believed in the intellectual side of the African American Community. He believed that as an educated African American they would become worth leaders, and gain prominence in their communities and the world. Du Bois believed in the African American youth, and dedicated much of his life to educating and helping the youth within the United States.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was truly inspired by Dr. Du Bois who was a leader in the first steps of the Civil Rights Movement. Not only did Dr. Du Bois inspire leaders, their leaderships, but also educators and other politicians.
Intelligence within my profession will help my progress as well as the ones I lead. I work in the African American Community, and his idea of having education will help me inspire the youth of today. Showing self-confidence will assist my message getting across to the ones I lead. When one gains these characteristics like Du Bois, many avenues open up and they are able to change the future. This is my goal within the education field, especially within the African American as well as low income areas.
W.E.B. Du Bois would be inspiration in any time of historical context. Especially in today’s world, as there seems to be many racial issues that are occurring. Another reason he would be successful today is because of the educational system. His ideas, thoughts, intelligence, and self-confidence would inspire the African American youth of today. Du Bois stated, “prospects of complete freedom for black people in the United States.” (Wren, 2013)
