17. It all started on a war-torn street
in Korea, where a humble pastor
named Everett Swanson was so moved
by the needs of abandoned orphans that
he had to do something. That’s what the
Greek word for Compassion means — being so
stirred in your soul that you can’t help but take
action. You have to make a difference. Today,
Compassion is one of the world’s largest and most
respected child development organizations. We’ve
changed a lot over the years. But three things
have remained steadfast: our mission, our heart for
children and the faithfulness of a loving God who
continues to lead us every step of the way.

is too important to do on our own. We start
meetings with prayer, share praises and prayer
requests with one another and even pray for
our sponsors and Compassion Country Staff. In
addition, we dedicate an hour every Wednesday
morning for spiritual growth activities like
chapel services, worship and prayer groups.
Compassion is a Christ-centered
ministry committed to the local church.
