5. Although Delaware is one of the nation’s smallest states in terms of geographical
size and population, the quality, array and sophistication of health care available to
its residents rivals that found in any major metropolitan area. This, in great part, is a
direct result of the innovative advancements made by Christiana Care Health
System, which cares for more than three-quarters of our neighbors living and
working in the northern part of the state.
6. Our Key Designations
Christiana Care is the only health system in Delaware to achieve Level I Trauma Center
designation granted by the state of Delaware and verified by the American College of
Surgeons.
We are recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as the region’s
only National Community Center of Excellence in Women’s Health.
Our Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute is one of only 14 cancer centers
in the nation selected for the National Cancer Institute Community Cancer Centers
Program.
9. The DAISY Award is a worldwide program that rewards and celebrates the
extraordinary clinical skills and compassionate care given by nurses each day.
Christiana Care Health System is proud to be a DAISY Award Partner, by giving
1 of our nurses this special honor each month.
Each DAISY Award Honoree will get a public ceremony on her/his unit sharing
why they were chosen and a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a hand-
carved stone sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch”. The unit will celebrate with
Cinnabon® cinnamon rolls – a favorite of Patrick’s during his illness. The
Barnes Family asks that when and wherever nurses smell that wonderful
cinnamon scent, they stop for a moment and think about how special they
are. To find out more about the program please go to
www.DAISYfoundation.org.
10. The Annual Excellence in Nursing Awards is a celebration of the significant contributions
Christiana Care Health System nurses make to improving the outcomes and experience
of the patients we serve.
Every year, during nurses week in May, the Professional Nurse Council holds this
celebration to recognize the best-of-the-best within our organization. Every unit and
department is encouraged to nominate nurses for this prestigious award from their
respective areas.
These winners are then invited and recognized by nursing and organizational leaders
including the President and CEO of Christiana Care Health System.

12. Our shared governance structure allows for idea exchange. Every nurse
within our health system has the opportunity to voluntarily participate on a
unit-level council as a member or leader; and even to represent his or her
colleagues in a position on a system-level council or committee.
Nurses, both at the bedside and leadership level have opportunities to
participate on committees or task forces convened to address a particular
need, bringing with them a unique perspective and a knowledge base
necessary for helping the group arrive at the optimal decision.
SHARED GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE
13. Christiana Care is one of the best-equipped hospitals in the nation
for safe patient handling. But few hospitals complement equipment with education as
well as we do, and fewer still have a dedicated in-house employee-injury-prevention
team, underscoring Christiana Care’s leadership in putting safety first.

14. Student Nurse Extern (SNE)
Program
Student nurse extern (SNE) programs
vary across Magnet organizations. Some
institutions offer them as a summer
program, others run year long. Several
institutions pay the students; others
structure the program as a clinical
course.

15. Christiana Care Nursing Orientation
The goal of our orientation process is to provide new nurses with the most
positive learning experience possible in a supportive and mentoring environment.
We start this process by matching new nurses with the best environment for their
continued growth and satisfaction. Nurses are “matched” with the unit that will
meet their interests and career development needs. The nursing orientation
process includes classroom sessions and hands-on activities for simulated
learning in our Virtual Education Simulation Training (VEST) Center, as well as
direct patient care.
