SUICIDES IN INDIA × At least 1 student commits suicide every hour in India, according to data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). × The year 2019 recorded the highest number of deaths by suicide (10,335). × In 2019, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh accounted for 44% of the total student suicides.

POSSIBLE REASONS that leads to thoughts of suicide! • Acute loss or rejection • Emphasis on academics • Conservative parenting • Exposure to violence/ bullying • Feelings of hopelessness or helplessness • Aggressive or disruptive behavior Publicly reminding kids for not getting good enough marks

- 12. WHAT PARENTS CAN DO? Providing a stable, safe physical and emotional home environment Spending quality time young people LISTENING to teens, not only to what is being said, but also to the covert messages Being supportive & not intrusive Encouraging appropriate expression of emotions

Teens who are thinking about suicide might: •talk about suicide or death in general •give hints that they might not be around anymore •talk about feeling hopeless or feeling guilty •pull away from friends or family •write songs, poems, or letters about death, separation, and loss •start giving away treasured possessions to siblings or friends •lose the desire to take part in favorite things or activities •have trouble concentrating or thinking clearly •have changes in eating or sleeping habits •engage in risk-taking behaviors •lose interest in school or sports

What to do? × Suicide is preventable, most suicidal individuals desperately want to live, they are just unable to see the alternatives to their problems. × Most suicidal individuals give definite warning of their suicidal intentions but others are either unaware of the significance of these warnings or do not know how to respond to them × Talking about suicide does not cause someone to be suicidal.
- 15. WAYS TO BE HELPFUL- × Be aware. Learn the warning signs × Get involved, become available × Show interest and support × Be willing to listen × Talk openly about suicide × Do not leave the person alone × Do not swear secrecy × Remove means × Get help from others × Contact your nearest helpline
- 16. Depression and suicidal feelings are treatable mental disorders. The child or adolescent needs to have his or her illness recognized and diagnosed, and appropriately treated with a comprehensive treatment plan.
