2. The community of Pavones is located in Buenos Aires, in the southern
Pacific region of Costa Rica. Pavones is a rural farming community, sur-
rounded by vast regions of pineapple plantations.
The existing classroom building was constructed by the community
without skilled labor, and is inadequate for the children it serves. KaTO
has been asked to provide a new master plan, including: classrooms,
bathrooms, an eating area, and other public spaces. The Ministry of Ed-
ucation plans for more children from surrounding communities to attend
the new school once completed.
Thesis:
How can architecture serve as a catalyst for education and advancement at the
scale of the student, the community, and the region?

The Nanjing museum was designed by the American Architect
Steven Holl in the lush green landscape of Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.
The museum consists of a series of galleries, tea room, bookstore,
and a curator’s residence. The program of the museum is emphasized
by the exploration of views, layers of space and parallel spaces. The
museum provides a visual axis which creates a linkage to the Ming
Dynasty, a magnificent framing of a historically significant view. This
building informs the relationship of a suspended structural system
with a the site and landscape, which is relevant to other sites with
limited ground space.

The Passive House uses “An openworked second skin in non-treated
bamboo [that] envelops the skeleton made of massive wood panels.
This coating, that becomes grey with time, has been inspired from
the typical barns in this region.” The project successfully implements
passive systems, including: mitigation and filtration of light,
conservation of energy, and ventilation. The environmental footprint
of the project is reduced due to the use of wood and bamboo and the
use of south facing fenestration.

8. As a means of involving the community in the design process, five options and a recommendation
were presented to the families of the children who will attend the school .
The community responded favorably to the recommended option, but with conditions. There was
concern for accessibility to the second level, and the community was not agreeable to wood
construction due to humidity and a cultural sense of permanence. The design team responded
by switching to steel construction, despite the higher costs, and demonstrating the appropriate
integration of a ramp from ground level to the second level. The ramp would serve as a series of
destinations, rather than a thoughtless addition to an otherwise completed building.

Various skin and roof systems were tested as means of understanding
the behavior of natural light into the classroom spaces. Tests were
performed at different times of day to analyze the possibility of glare
and solar heat gain on the east, south, and west facades of the
building. Horizontal skylights of a range of shapes and sizes were
considered.
(1) Emulation of polycarbonate with fixed vertical louvers,
demonstrating the entry of diffuse light through a semi-transparent
skin, as well as the possibility of light from the interior glowing during
the night.
(2) Facade inside of the steel structure composed of operable metal
metals which open and close to control the entry of light.

The second roof system was a strip skylight which sits above the
blackboard on the north wall. It was considered two ways: with a clear
skylight that angled south and fully transparent, and popped up above
of the roof, horizontal and with a translucent material.
(1) The first skylight allowed direct light from the ceiling that washed
the north wall above the board. At only one foot deep, the light did
not significantly penetrate into the space.
(2) Exterior profile
(3) The second skylight permitted entry of only diffused light through
the translucent material stretched over it. This created a glow which
illuminated the top of the north wall instead of direct light in option 1.

A range of options were considered for naturally illuminating the
library space. Because the primary facade is south facing, the
concrete masonry walls which bound the comedor were rotated out
to prevent direct gain into the space.
Various modules were tested for quantity of natural light based on
specific numbers of concrete block panels. These qualities of light
were analyzed providing enough illumination for reading at different
points in the room.
