P. Ramlee was a legendary Malaysian singer, actor, director and composer who made significant contributions to Malay cinema and music. He acted in 66 films, sang 390 songs, directed 35 films, and was a prolific songwriter, composer, musician and producer. Ramlee had a natural talent for music and learned to play instruments like the violin and ukulele in his youth. He debuted in 1948 at the Shaw Brothers Studio in Singapore and helped raise standards in Malaysian creative arts through his innovative songs and films. Ramlee was versatile across many genres from jazz to traditional Malaysian styles like joget and was beloved by millions for his songs even after his death.

○ Scouted by a Shaw Director – BS Rajhans – to audition to be a
musician when P. Ramlee and his friend performed ‘kroncong’
tunes gave them tickets to Singapore
○ Kroncong – adapted origins Portugese, culture origin is
Indonesia back in the 16th century: heard in the rhythmic
background of the music created by the interlocking of
instruments playing on or off beat– vocals, ukulele, cello, guitar,
bass, flute, violin
4. P. RAMLEE
○ Has musical versatility, and well-versed across genres ranging
from jazz to ‘joget’
○ Debuted in SG, Shaw Studio, Jalan Ampas in 1948
○ Raised the standards of creative arts through his songs & films
○ Joget: fast-paced rhythm, with duple and triple beat division.
Main musical instruments involve the violin (strings family) and
rebana (in the percussion family)
○ Rebana – made of wood/metal, have tubular bodies

One day, the son asked, “Why do you keep making songs about love, names,
and flowers? I'm not interested.“
“There are three reasons why I make such a song. Firstly, I like it. Secondly,
you are a useless child because you never appreciate the work of your own
father. Thirdly, millions of people love my songs, and when I die, my songs will
become classic songs.”
