Contemporary Philippine music refers to 20th century compositions that have adopted elements from Western art music as well as popular music trends. Major contemporary composers like Francisco Buencamino Sr., Francisco Santiago, and Nicanor Abelardo blended Western techniques with traditional Philippine elements. Buencamino founded music schools and composed popular zarzuelas and kundimans. Santiago is known as the "Father of Kundiman" and composed pieces fusing Western forms with folk materials. Abelardo developed a romantic style using chromaticism and unusual chord combinations.
