The student conducted a study of 10 male FIU students ages 16-24 to analyze the relationship between weight and hours of sleep. Descriptive statistics showed the average hours of sleep was 6.16 hours with a standard deviation of 1.18 hours, and the average weight was 60.80 kg with a standard deviation of 6.16 kg. A correlation analysis found a negative correlation of -0.658, indicating students who slept less tended to weigh more. Therefore, the student concluded there is a negative relationship between hours of sleep and weight, and recommends students sleep 6-8 hours per night to maintain a healthier weight.
1. Mini Project -1: Relationship between weight and hours of sleep
Introduction
The student has been very concerned about increasing weights of boys in her university. This
is why she chose to do a statistical research to analyze the relationship between weight and
hours of sleep. The Student thinks that student’s weight should increase as they use less energy
when sleeping more.
Objectives of the study
The objective of this study is to use the tools of descriptive analysis to establish a relationship
between hours of sleep and weight. This research will also analyze the variability in the hours
of sleep among students.
Significance of the study
The Student believed that this study, comprising the explicit information about the significant
relationship that exist between the number of hours of sleep and the weight of a person. It
would prove helpful to the students and professionals who may have an interrelated subject in
the future. Definitely, will donate to those people who are not aware about the effects of their
sleep to their weight.
Finally, the findings of their research project can be used by the Student as a source of
information and data in their respective future related.
Scope and Limitations
This research covers the weight and the number of hours of sleep of several first and second
year Florida International University students. As this is the first mini project, the student has
2. used only very basic statistical tools. This research is limited to FIU male students only with
ages ranging from 16 – 24 years.
Data Collection and Analysis
Data was collected using interview tool of survey method. The male students of FIU University
constitutes the sample frame.

Following statistics were calculated using the data:
Mean Standard Deviation N
Number of hour of
sleep
6.16 1.18 10
3. Weight 60.80 6.16 10
The average number of hours of sleep of the students is 6.16 hours, however, it normally
deviates by 1.18 hrs. The average weight of the students is 60.80 kg, however, it normally
deviates by 6.50 kg.
Correlation is -0.658 it shows negative relationship between weight and Number of hour of
sleep. There is a negative correlation that exist between the number of hours of sleep of the
FIU students and their weight. Therefore, we could say that whenever their number of hours of
sleep would increase, their weights will decrease and vice versa. However, as the value of
correlation coefficient is lower than 0.75, the movement or association between the variables
is low.
Conclusion and Recommendation
The Student, would like to recommend to everyone concerned that we need to consider the
results of this research that there is a negative relationship that exist between the number of
hours of sleep of a student to his weight. This means that sleeping less could affect your weight,
so we would like to recommend that everyone should at least sleep for about 6-8 hours a day.

4. Increasing weight from lack of sleep is not a good thing, if we want to stay fit, we should
exercise, but always keep your sleep at about the average or normal sleeping time for
adolescence and adults. Sleeping less could also be a cause of sleep deprivation, and as much
as possible, we should try to avoid it. Manage our time wisely, and have a good sleeping habit.
