9. ENERGY
An increasing world population and
greater demands on environmental
awareness call for high efficiency
energy solutions with minimal carbon
dioxide emission.
Major resources in the form of
laboratories and talented staff.
Technical and process solutions for
more efficient utilisation of
resources and energy and less
environmental impact.
10. ICT, INFORMATION AND
COMMUNICATIONS
TECHNOLOGY
Mobile phones are becoming dominant
communication tools. More electronics
and wireless communication in society.
This means risks of greater
interference.
SP carries out research into
communications technology, wireless
technology, optronics, reliable systems,
robust electronics and time-time
synchronisation. We have powerful
laboratory and testing resources.
11. LIFE SCIENCE
There are more and more people in the world,
and the numbers of elderly people are
increasing. This is raising the demand for
everything from sustainable food production to
the development of medicines and medical-
technological aids.
SP has broad – and in some respects, world
leading – competence in this field.
A unique knowledge of biomaterials, surface
chemistry, packaging, agricultural
technology and the climate impact of foods.
Offers advanced resources within
measurement technology, chemical analysis
and the characterisation of all types of
material.
12. RISKS AND SECURITY
An increasingly high-tech and complex
society entails an increase in vulnerability;
there are ever more risks and they are ever
more serious.
Risk analysis to minimise the number of
accidents, avoid economic losses and deal
with the consequences of various
incidents.
An ability to deal with terrorist threats and
natural disasters.
SP supports the development of products
offering the correct levels of security.
Information security
13. THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT
One of the major challenges within the field
of social structure is to use material and
building technology that produces minimal
CO2 during production, usage and recycling.
Million Programme fields must undergo
energy streamlining.
Extensive renovation projects burden
society.
Find cost-effective solutions for low
future environmental impact.
SP creates new knowledge through
participating in a range of research
projects.
14. TRANSPORTATION
Demands on reduction in emissions and
greater energy efficiency. The phasing out
of fossil fuels and the introduction of
renewable fuels. Safer, more comfortable
transportation.
A broad resource within
transportation, engaged by companies
in the automotive, mechanical
engineering and off-shore industries.
Is developing AstaZero, a unique
environment for road safety research.

22. EXAMPLE:
MORE EFFICIENT WASTE
INCINERATION
Query
Alkali causes problems when incinerating
waste and refuse.
SP's efforts
SP has shown that problems are reduced
significantly if the temperature in the
bottom bed is reduced to 700 C
Result
The new technology is now in full-scale
use in Borås and has resulted in great
reductions in operation and maintenance
costs. The same technology can be used at
other plants.
23. EXAMPLE:
USE OF LIGHTWEIGHT
MATERIALS IN SHIPS
Query
Lightweight materials offer many benefits in ship
applications, not least due to reductions in fuel
requirements, but they involve increased fire risks.
SP's efforts
SP has implemented a number of major
international projects which have evaluated and
developed applications for lightweight materials in
ships.
Result
Kockums in Karlskrona has extended its business
concept to also include civilian products and sold
its first carbon fibre catamaran in 2009. STENA has
requested approval for a lightweight ferry from the
British Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Two new
rule proposals have been submitted to IMO with
regard to lightweight ships.
24. EXAMPLE:
ECO-FRIENDLY ORIGINAL PAINT
Query:
SSAB Tunnplåt, which up to now has used
large quantities of solvent and 100%
fossil-based paint, wanted to come up
with a more eco-friendly alternative.
SP/EcoBuild's efforts
EcoBuild has made it possible for
promising research results from the Royal
Institute of Technology to see successful,
large-scale industrial implementation.
Result
A significant proportion of SSAB's sheet
steel production is now painted using eco-
friendly paints.
25. EXAMPLE:
PLUS DISTRICT OF KONGAHÄLLA
Query
How can we create energy-efficient districts
and Plus districts for the next generation?
SP's efforts
Pilot study to indicate the chances of constructing a
district that uses less energy over the year than is
created within the area. Client: Municipality of
Kungälv & VGR.
Result
A summary of possible technologies, together with
scenario calculations, indicates the chances of
bringing about a Plus district. Challenges which
need to be overcome have also been summarised.
The pilot constitutes a basis for the plans to create
the next-generation district in Kungälv.
