Heard Museum Tour

Join the Government Information Division for a fun and informative
tour of Phoenix’s famed Heard Museum. Since 1929, the Heard
Museum has educated visitors from around the world who come to
learn about the arts and cultures of the Native peoples of the
Americas. With more than 40,000 artifacts and fine art in its
permanent collection, nine long-term and changing exhibition
galleries, an education center, an award winning museum shop,
bookstore, and a courtyard café, the private non-profit museum
remains committed to being a place of learning, discovery, excellence
and unforgettable experiences. (Pre-registration for this ticketed
event on the SLA 2017 Conference website is required in order to

Rethinking “New Sources” in Legal Research
Sunday, June 18, 2017, 9:00 am-10:00 am

Join retired Law Librarian of Congress Roberta Shaffer to examine
and evaluate various “new sources” for legal research. The session
will provide a historical overview of how courts have identified new
sources of research to incorporate into their judicial decision making.
The speaker will highlight older “innovations” like the law review and
the Brandeis brief, but will also focus on the more recent influences of
URLs, blogs and other social media, and most importantly, the use
and analysis of raw data.

Organizing and Preserving Indigenous Legal Materials: Success
Stories and Lessons Learned at the Law Library of Congress

The Indigenous Law Portal is a collaborative project between the
Library of Congress’s Library Services Policy and Standards Division
and Law Library of Congress. The Portal creates access to digitized
materials from their Law Library collections, tribal websites, and other
primary source materials, contributing to a global circle of knowledge.
How can indigenous legal traditions be located and shared digitally?
Technologically, can the Portal support oral traditions with different
file formats? Should indigenous groups be organized geographically
and/or linguistically? How is the most recent and accurate
information about an indigenous community verified? In this session,
you will hear experts from the Law Library of Congress share their
insights on the future development plan of the “Law of the
Indigenous Peoples in the Americas.”

Understanding Cultural Diversity: Why It Matters to Information
Professionals

provides an overview of the acquisitions process for information
resources in federal government agencies. It will also include a vision
for successfully engaging contractors, focusing on the means
necessary to bring that about. The presentation will address key
concepts in competition and negotiation. It will also identify practical
tools for contract performance monitoring and oversight to help
information professionals navigate the notoriously rocky slopes of
federal acquisitions

Preparing for the Worst, Hoping for the Best: Disaster Planning
101 for Information Professionals

No one wants to think about worst case scenarios, but planning
ahead can be the difference between quickly restoring services or
being out of commission for months or years after disaster strikes.
What are your most likely worst case scenarios—natural or man-
made—that can disable your library or information resource center?
How can you prepare to avoid or mitigate damage? How can you
protect your print and electronic collections from the unforeseen
dangers on earth and in cyberspace? How can you best recover from
damage and quickly resume the essential library services and
operations for your organization? A panel of experts from the Library
of Congress will discuss strategies and best practices in disaster
planning for U.S. libraries and information research centers.
Participants will learn library disaster planning in a nutshell.

Fair Use in the Digital Age: Latest Developments in Digital
Copyright Law for Information Professionals

In this session, you will hear a panel of copyright experts from the
United States Copyright Office (USPTO), law firms, and information
publishers as they discuss and share their insights on the latest
developments in digital copyright law in the United States, including
recent court decisions addressing digitization and fair use. You will
learn how U.S. law is currently interpreted through case
studies, and the potential legal ramifications of copyrighted
information in digital format for libraries and information research
institutions.

The Portal creates access to digitized materials from their Law Library collections, tribal websites, and other primary source materials, contributing to a global circle of knowledge. How can indigenous legal traditions be located and shared digitally? Technologically, can the Portal support oral traditions with different file formats? Should indigenous groups be organized geographically and/or linguistically? How is the most recent and accurate information about an indigenous community verified?
