tour of Phoenix’s famed Heard Museum. Since 1929, the Heard
Museum has educated visitors from around the world who come to
learn about the arts and cultures of the Native peoples of the
Americas. With more than 40,000 artifacts and fine art in its
permanent collection, nine long-term and changing exhibition
galleries, an education center, an award winning museum shop,
bookstore, and a courtyard café, the private non-profit museum
remains committed to being a place of learning, discovery, excellence

Rethinking “New Sources” in Legal Research

Join retired Law Librarian of Congress Roberta Shaffer to examine
and evaluate various “new sources” for legal research. The session
will provide a historical overview of how courts have identified new
sources of research to incorporate into their judicial decision making.
The speaker will highlight older “innovations” like the law review and
the Brandeis brief, but will also focus on the more recent influences of
URLs, blogs and other social media, and most importantly, the use
and analysis of raw data.

Organizing and Preserving Indigenous Legal Materials: Success
Stories and Lessons Learned at the Law Library of Congress

The Indigenous Law Portal is a collaborative project between the
Library of Congress’s Library Services Policy and Standards Division
and Law Library of Congress. The Portal creates access to digitized
materials from their Law Library collections, tribal websites, and other
primary source materials, contributing to a global circle of knowledge.
How can indigenous legal traditions be located and shared digitally?
Technologically, can the Portal support oral traditions with different
file formats? Should indigenous groups be organized geographically
and/or linguistically? How is the most recent and accurate
information about an indigenous community verified? In this session,
you will hear experts from the Law Library of Congress share their
insights on the future development plan of the “Law of the
Indigenous Peoples in the Americas.”

studies, and the potential legal ramifications of copyrighted
information in digital format for libraries and information research
