Editor's Notes
While each of the three tracks has its own requirements, there are a few classes that everyone in the major takes.
All students must take Jour 1001, Introduction to Mass Communication. This is a program prerequisite that must be completed or in progress at the time of application – you’ll get more information the application process later in this session.
All students must also take Jour 3004W, Information for Mass Communication.
After that, each track includes a minimum of 10 other Jour courses which correspond to the program track and student’s interests.
Those 10 additional Jour courses break down into two types of courses; professional skills courses and context courses. Students will take both types throughout their time in the program.
In the skills courses, you will create a number of professional projects that you can use in your future portfolio, such as PR news releases, news stories, video packages, and ad campaigns.
Skills classes are also smaller in class size, so you will get more hands-on training from your faculty member, and you will focus on developing your practical skills.
Context courses are lecture-based and more academic in nature. You will focus more on the theory and ideas behind mass communication.
Additionally, every SJMC major must complete a ‘Supporting Coursework Requirement,’ which is 12 upper level credits outside of the major.
This requirement can be fulfilled by:
Completing a second major in another department
Completing a minor in another department, or
Completing a thematic option, which is a series of courses in different departments that achieve a common theme. This option must be approved by a faculty mentor.
Here is a visual representation of the number of credits required for a bachelor’s degree in journalism. You need 120 credits to graduate, and of those 120, you will have a minimum of 36 and a maximum of 48 credits in journalism. This means that at least 72 of your credits must be outside of journalism – including your supporting coursework.
