19. Summarize of Brief
A new build hotel is being built in London, Developers and Architects have worked for many years to find a site, arrange the multi-million pound budget, work up architectural plans
that meet with the local authorities planning guidelines. They now have an approved design which sets out all of the general principles, the building size and orientation, the organ-
isation of internal routes, lifts (elevators) stairways and passages, the planning for the provision of services to heat, cool and power the building, the ‘back of house’ consideration
of how the staff will operate the day to day running, the sizing of the restaurant facilities and of course the size and quantity of the bedrooms.
They are now coming to you to design these bedrooms. For this hotel I will be designing three hotel rooms that will provide the following key elements:
• Bedroom size 7850mm X 31000mm with ceiling height of 2400mm
• Double bed or two twin beds that maybe connected.
• Night stands
• One dresser
• Mini Bar
• Small refrigerator
• Table with 3 chairs
• Closet
• Bathroom
Design is shown as boring traditional while the character and personality of the room will be developed utilizing the given space, and room shape. The anticipated price of the room
indicates the room will be in an affordable upper midrange hotel requiring style and should meet the needs of couples.
The majority of bedrooms suit couples as they provide a double bed or a twin bed (a zip-and-link bed combined both these facilities. Most people bring one clothing bag each to
a hotel and stay, on average, 3 days. Most people eat breakfast in the hotel restaurant, however the hotel like there to be a table on which the guests can have room service light
snacks (sandwiches etc). The hotel wants to provide a very small mini-bar fridge which will stock a couple of free bottles of water – the fridge can be used by the guests to put their
own drinks/food in. Each room will have a small laptop safe for the guest to use to lock away passports, money, valuables and of course a laptop if they have one.

31. This project is to create a ‘Starter Studio’ for Melting Point, a government funding group, in a
two-story building in Islington’s Upper Street. The primary objectives for creating this unique
shop, exhibition, gallery, workshop, and living space is four-fold:
• Provide a vibrant live-in workspace where recent university craftsperson’s/maker’s gradu-
ates, can live, create and sell their work, and in doing so launch their careers and encourage a
positive active lifestyle of creativity and craft.
• Produce the Melting Point Starter studio to be a shop, gallery, and a destination for the
public to engage with the maker, to visit the space and see not just how things are made but how
they might benefit from individually made, creatively inspired objects in their own lives.
• Create a space that will incorporate the different craft’s physical materials to connect with
the community and intuitively promote the craft. In doing so the materials and artisans will be the
highlight or heroes of the space.
• Promote Melting Points objectives of elevating contemporary crafts to prominence using
various mediums (internet), resources (magazines etc.), community (interaction through class-
es and workshops) and gathering/collaborative spot (coffee shop) through the creation of imag-
inative, artistic and inspiring spaces.
My design will incorporate these objectives in vibrate, original spaces that intuitively reflect the
physical materials of the crafts.

In using the red color for the staircase, I wanted to make the connection between the work and living space inviting, compelling and interesting. The red
fabric staircase with marble stairs (elements of the artists) in the center of a white room draw the visitors curiosity.
In using the white walls I felt would best showcase the artist’s works.
I used the glass floor to create a translucent or transparent feeling which would connect the artist’s life with the artists work. The artist and viewer seeing
working and living spaces add personality, feeling and excitement The visitor becomes immersed in the artists life and may help the guests to better cap-
ture the feeling behind the creations.
As a special feature I designed the work table into and as a component of the staircase to suggest or symbolize the marriage of workspace and living
space, create a talking point, better utilize the space and add to the overall excitement of the space.
