• Rheumatic arthritis (RA)
chronic inflammatory disorder
attacks the joints producing an inflammatory
synovitis
• The first known case - 4500 BC
• Rheumatoid Arthritis - coined by British
rheumatologist Dr. Alfred Baring Garrod in
1859

• Chronic Autoimmune disease
• pain intensifies
• Progressive deterioration of joint structures
leads to deformations and disability

4. CASE STUDY
• Mrs. Raveena Gurung
• 51 years old female
• Mother - 3 daughters
• Works - operations administrator at tech
company

5. CLINICAL SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
During flare up’s
• Severe pain
• Swelling
• Unable to complete daily activities
Signs & Symptoms
• Slight pain - wrists during normal activities
• More stiff in morning

6. 3 years back:
Attended complimentary and alternative
medicine (CAM) therapy with failure
Morning symptoms -
• Inability to close her hands
• Malaise and fatigue
• “feeling like a 90 year old woman”

7. ON PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
• Bilateral tenderness
• swelling - proximal interphalangeal &
metacarpophalangeal joints

8. ON SERLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS
• Autoantibodies to Fc portion
• Autologous IgG detected
ON BLOOD COUNT
• Microcytic anemia
• Hb - 11.6g/dl
• C-reactive protein - 9.5 g/dl

9. Diagnosis
• Blood results show development of
rheumatoid arthritis
