Sojourner Center was founded in 1977 as a program to help women transition to society after they were released from prison. In the early years of the program the staff and Board of Directors found that domestic violence was a common issue amongst the women in transition. The founders of Sojourner Center changed their focus to this issue based upon the needs of those that they were helping. Community advocates of domestic violence reduction and prevention banded together to positively impact the lives of domestic violence victims.
Sojourner Center helps more than 8,700 women and children each year. The center has grown to 3 campuses with a capacity of 280 beds and 32 transitional apartments. They offer their services to women regardless of their substance abuse history, race,
