Morro Bay Turns Blue for a Day
Morro Bay turned blue last Wednesday, as law enforcement agencies from throughout the
county attended the Annual Peace Officers’ Memorial Service at Morro Rock. It
was the first time ever that the ceremonies were held in Morro Bay.
The solemn service was dedicated to eight California law enforcement men and women
who died in the line of duty over the past year. They are: CHP Officer Robert F.
Dickey of Winterhaven; CHP Ofc. Douglas “Scott” Russell of Placerville; Rialto
PD Ofc. Sergio Carrera, Jr.; CHP Ofc. John P. Miller of Dublin; Det. Kent
Hawkins of Tulare County Sheriffs; Det. Vu D. Nguyen of the Sacramento
Sheriff’s Department; LAPD Ofc. Randal Simmons and Sr. D.A.
Investigator Laura Cleaves of the Santa Barbara County District
Attorney’s Office. The ceremony included a 21-gun salute by the
California Mens Colony’s Honor Guard with Al Streder playing
taps. Morro Bay’s Taylor Peters and Rouvaishyana of the State
Parks Department sang three moving songs including the National
Anthem, “In the Arms of the Angels” and The Prayer.” Rev.
Mark Richardson, Fr. Ed Holterhoff, Pastor Roger Evey
and Chaplain Jared Sharon led the group in prayers.
Morro Bay Chief John DeRohan, Sheriff Pat Hedges
and CHP Capt. Bill Vail also spoke.
