2. Definition of Hypertension
Hypertension also known as high blood
pressure.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing
against the walls of arteries as it flows through
them. Arteries are the blood vessels that carry
oxygenated blood from the heart to the body's
tissues.
3. Prevalence
Hypertension is a very common condition, in both
developing countries and industrialized nations.
In fact, according to the American Heart Association,
more than 76 million Americans over age 20 — or 1 in 3
adults — have high blood pressure.
4. Prevalence IN INDIA
About 33% urban and 25% rural Indians are hypertensive. Of these,
25% rural and 42% urban Indians are aware of their hypertensive
status. Only 25% rural and 38% of urban Indians are being treated
for hypertension. One-tenth of rural and one-fifth of urban Indian
hypertensive population have their BP under control.

6. PRIMARY HYPERTENSION
• Primary hypertension is the high blood pressure
developed as a result of environmental or genetic
causes
• Accounts for 90-95% of adult cases
• According to a new analysis of data from the
Nationwide Emergency Department,
Systolic 140-159 mm Hg, Diastolic 90-99 mm Hg
7. SECONDARY HYPERTENSION
• Secondary hypertension developed as a result of
multiple etiologies, including renal, vascular, and
endocrine causes
• Accounts for 2-10% of adult cases
• According to a new analysis of data from the
Nationwide Emergency Department,
Systolic 160 or > mmHg, Diastolic 100 or > mmHg
30. EXAMINATIONS
• Medical and family history
• Physical examination (several blood
pressure readings at different times)
• Ophthalmoscopy (examination of the blood
vessels in the eye)
31. • Chest X-ray (detect an enlarged heart, other
vascular (heart) abnormalities, or lung
disease)
• Electrocardiograph (ECG) (to detect heart
muscle enlargement/damage)
• Blood and urine tests (to detect the
presence of disorders)
EXAMINATIONS
37. Water-only
fasting
A study done
with 174 high
BP patients
Duration
10 to 11 days
Limited with
fruits and
vegetables
Reduction in
BP was 37/13
mm Hg
41. According to AMA, drink 2 glasses of beet root juice/day
Nitric oxide in this relaxes blood vessels and thus lowers
blood pressure
Water melon contains vitamins C & A, antioxidant lycopene,
potassium and the amino acid citrulline
Citrulline removes ammonia from the body and regulates
vascular tone
42. According to WebMD, drink 2 glasses of orange juice
(contains citrus bioflavonoids)/day
Decreases about 6.9% in systolic blood pressure and 3.5%
in diastolic blood pressure
Bananas provide vitamin C, folate, calcium, magnesium,
phosphorus and potassium. One banana = 400 mg of K
According to JAMA, decreases about 3 mmHg in systolic
blood pressure and 2 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure
43. Apples contain QUERCETIN - a
powerful antioxidant
Contains no fat, only 95 calories, gives
us 4 grams of fiber
According to “Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences of the
USA”,
Broccoli contains glucoraphanin
It boosts the body’s own antioxidant
system
46. YOGA
SAVASANA MAKRASANA
Lying down yoga asanas such as Savasana and makrasana are
particularly useful for reducing stress and lowering blood pressure
because it naturally allows the heart to slow down, and less effort to
pump the blood to the brain
47. Inverted Asana
INVERTED ASANAS
Movement of the chin
toward the chest
Acts on baroreceptors
in the carotid arteries
Baroreceptors are
sensitive to changes
in blood pressure
Restores normal blood
pressure
48. Setubandhasan
Bridge pose is energizing for the kidneys and hence
soothes the system and lowers high blood pressure
49. Adho Mukha Svanasana
It lifts the heart only a little above the head and does not
elevate the legs
50. Paschimottanasana
It acts as a stress reliever
Reduces fatty deposits in the abdomen
Remove anxiety, anger and irritability
Calms the mind
51. Viparita Karani
This pose also gives blood circulation a gentle boost toward
the upper body and head, which creates a pleasant
rebalancing after standing or sitting for a long time
53. MUDRA
A scientific look
• Fore finger symbolises the

• Thumb finger symbolises
the FIRE
• Middle finger symbolises
the ETHER
• Ring finger symbolises the
EARTH
• Little finger symbolises the
WATER

55.
56. HYDROTHERAPY
Cold pack on spine is used to ease from
hypertension
A study reported in the Journal of Orthopaedic
Sports Physical Therapy, (Jul/Aug, 1994), found
that, despite the reactive vasodilation, there
was a significant sustained reduction in local
blood volume after approximately 20 minutes
of ice applied
64. Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy has been used to overcome grief, sadness, anxiety,
depression psychosis and thus reduces blood pressure
Hyssop, marjoram, neroli, bergamot, lavender oil, sandalwood and
cypress are used to ease the feelings of grief
65. Reverse Massage with Cinnamon and Lavender oils
have the ability to open the pores and provoke
sweating. They also have the ability to stimulate the
circulation of blood and lymph, relax and soothe
tense, sore or aching muscles
Overheated passions and fiery tempers are cooled
down by fragrances like Camphor, Jasmine, Rose
and Sandalwood
66. chromo therapy
Green color is the color of the Heart and it regulates circulation
Green Colour
Acts on sympathetic
nervous system
Relieves tension in
blood vessels
Dilates capillaries
Lowers B.P.
67. chromo therapy- solarized water
Green & blue colour charged
water 2-3 times daily, early
morning in empty stomach
upto 6-8 ounces helps to
throw out the foreign matter
and cleanses the system
68. chromo therapy- clothes & room
Green & blue colour charged
water 2-3 times daily, early
morning in empty stomach
upto 6-8 ounces helps to
throw out the foreign matter
and cleanses the system
69. AIR THERAPY
Air bath has soothing and
tonic effect upon the millions
of nerve endings all over the
surface of the body
Cold air bath - 10 to 15
minutes twice weekly to give
relaxing effect to the body
70. MAGNETOTHERAPY
Magnets
Influence iron in the
blood
Removes deposited
calcium, cholesterol
Clean, purify and
ionize the blood
Flow of ionized
blood takes place
No clotting
Decreases BP
Bipolar
magnetized
water 1-2
ounces 4 to 5
times/day
71. The magnets influence the iron in the blood
through which it reaches every part of the body.
Thus, it removes calcium, cholesterol and other
minerals that get deposited
Magnets have the potential to clean, purify and
ionize the blood. The flow of ionized blood takes
place easily and there is no clotting. Activities of
the heart and the blood pressure are at ease
72. ACUPUNCTURE
ACUPUNCTURE POINTS
Ki 3, Liv 3, Sp 9, L.I. 4, Ht 7, St 36, Sp 6, Ki 7 and
Lu 9
These points stimulate nerves, releasing
chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and
brain. The cascading release of chemicals and
hormones can have an impact on chronic pain
and even overall mental health.
73. • The study includes 24 male and 10 female patients. Ki 3 (Taixi), Liv 3
(Taichong), Sp 9 (Yinlingquan), L.I. 4 (Hegu), Ht 7 (Shenmen), St 36
(Zusanli), Sp 6 (Sanyinjiao), Ki 7 (Fulio), Lu 9 acupuncture points were
needled
• acupuncture for one month in every two days for a total of 15 sessions
