C J Bell OBE
Commanding Officer
1st
Battalion Scots Guards
Of Service
30096325 LSgt MacDougall joined the Army in 2009. After completing basic training, he
joined the Scots Guards in Bourlon Barracks, Catterick. LSgt Macdougall’s potential was
clear. He became a Warrior Armoured Fighting Vehicle driver and deployed to Canada
on a crucial capability development exercise. His performance led to him being selected
for a promotional course which he passed with a good grade. LSgt Macdougall was
promoted to LCpl on 3rd
Dec 2009, comfortably ahead of his peers. LSgt Macdougall
deployed to Afghanistan on Op Herrick 12 in 2010. As the commander of an isolated
check point his responsibilities included maintaining security in an exceptionally volatile
area, organising partnered patrols with the Afghans and engaging with the local
population in order to protect them from a determined and ruthless insurgency.
Macdougall did this with aplomb, earning the respect of subordinates and superiors
alike.
On return from operations, LCpl MacDougall was selected to teach soldiers how to drive
and maintain Warrior Armoured Fighting Vehicles in Bovington. Only the best are
selected for this course due to its technical and cerebral requirements. LSgt Macdougall
used the qualification to train soldiers in the maintenance of vehicles as they prepared to
deploy to Afghanistan. LSgt Macdougall continued to impress and in June 2011 He was
selected to attend the arduous Section Commanders’ Battle Course in Brecon. The 4
month course trains a junior soldier to become a leader in the field as well as teaching
him skills on weapons systems, tactics, procedures and how to safely conduct training. It
is not a course for everyone. LSgt Macdougall completed it with ease and an impressive
grade. The course qualified him for promotion to Lance Sergeant (LSgt).
LSgt Macdougall became a Section Commander in the Scots Guards in Oct 11. He
completed further courses including the All Arms Search Course for which he received
further praise. Despite his desire to return to Afghanistan with the battalion, LSgt
MacDougall was selected to train new recruits at the Infantry Training Centre in
Catterick. This vital job allows no room for error. LSgt Macdougall trained, mentored,
lead and administered civilians into soldiers. His section won the best section
competition and it contained the best shot and best recruit in the intake. The course
allowed LSgt Macdougall to achieve his NVQ leadership qualification as well as
clearance to work with junior adults.
LSgt Macdougall is a trustworthy, reliable and diligent soldier. I would have him in any
organisation I commanded tomorrow. It is with great regret that LSgt Macdougall is
moving on to new things but he leaves with the best wishes of all the officers and men of
the Scots Guards, Our loss is someone else’s considerable gain.
