Dolce & Gabbana unveils new controversial collection.
Dolce & Gabbana are quickly shaping up to be the most inclusive fashion house yet. With
their announcement of creating a hijab and abayas collection last month their newest line is
set to differ opinion.
Their latest collection features cartoon styled same-sex couples on their classic black bags
and plain T-shirts and are expected to be priced around £300.
The designing duo have uploaded photos of their classic D&G black bags with same-sexed
women and men couples carrying two or three kids. Hashtagging the picture with djfamily
and world and heart emojis, have had a more mixed review than probably expected.
Instagrammers took to their thousands to like the photo; however, some comments suggest
that the damage from an interview early last year is still in the minds of their followers. One
instagrammer commented ‘ridiculously trying to fix what you said about homoparental
families not’ and ‘nobody will forget your statement of ‘’synthetic children’’ with synthetic
bag of yours! @dolcegabbana greedformoremoney fakesympathy.’
Last March Dolce made comments on IVF treatment branding it “wombs for rent” and
“sperm selected from a catalog,” which caused a public boycott on the brand led by Sir Elton
John.
Sara Ilyas Fashion Editor of the Guardian believes ‘’[the line] can also be seen as a cynical
and [a] calculated move to compensate for their rather controversial comments last year about
IVF babies being 'synthetic.’’’
When talking to Jack Walker, a strong advocate for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and
transgender) community he agreed saying, ‘’I think it’s (the collection) pretty crowd
pleasing, they are just doing things to make themselves look better and are hopping onto any
‘trend’ that is popular, for example them introducing them hijab collection.’’

Dolce, formally in a relationship with Gabbana apologised for his comments through a
Vogue interview saying he had done some ‘soul searching.’ By August last year Sir Elton
John had already forgiven Dolce for the comments.
The unveiling of the new collection on their social media feeds comes just days after in Italy,
the designer’s home base, politicians are set to vote on a bill that may recognise same-sex
civil unions, extend parental rights to same sex couples and give the right to same sex couples
legally adopting.
Even though the collection’s availability and official pricing has been very downplayed a rep
for the label said that it’s ‘expected to be in stores soon.’
