The Department of Izabal is located in the North Eastern region of Guatemala. It limits to the North with the
department of Petén, Belize and the Caribbean Sea; To the South with the department of Zacapa;To the
East with the Republic of Honduras;And to the West with the department of Alta Verapaz. The
departmental head, Puerto Barrios,is located ata distanceof 308 km from the capital of the republic.In the

3. Tikal
Tikal (or Tik'al,accordingto modern Mayan orthography) is one of the largestarchaeological sites
and urban centers of pre-Columbian Mayan civilization.Itis located in the municipality of Flores,in the
department of Petén, in the present territory of the Republic of Guatemala and forms part of the Tikal
National Park,which was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1979.1 Accordingto the glyphs found
in the Yax Mutul.2 His Mayan name would have been Yax Mutul.2
Tikal was the capital of a belligerentstate, which became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient
Maya.3 Although the monumental architectureof the sitedates back to the fourth century BC, C., Tikal
reached its apogee duringClassic Period,between 200 and 900 d. During this time, the city dominated much
of the Maya region in the political,economic and military spheres and maintained linkswith other regions
throughout Mesoamerica,includingthegreat metropolis of Teotihuacan,in the distantValley of Mexico.5
After the Late Classic, no major monuments were built.
With a longlistof dynastic rulers,the discovery of many of their respective tombs and the study of their
monuments, temples and palaces,Tikal isprobably the best understood of the great Mayan cities of the
Mesoamerican lowlands.
