In-depth Analysis Mikey
I begin my analysis with Mikey because I feel she stuck out like a sore thumb throughout
the whole story. I will attempt to analyze her in the following areas; her views on competition,
world view, single loop earning, and on the ways she exhibited certain traits which contributed to
the dysfunctions of the team she was a part of. I also want to point out that she definitely took on
a victim role during this story and had a very low level of emotional intelligence.
I would like to begin with her views on competition, Mikey seemed to portray this sense
of the grass was always greener on the other side of the fence. She was constantly complaining
or making remarks on how the former enterprises or firms she had been employed with were
superior in every way. She would mumble under her breath and came off as being very
judgmental of other people yet unaware of her own behavior. Mikey clearly exhibited a lack of
respect and trust for her team. A good example of this is when she was at the first off site and
Nick was talking and she would role her eyes or when she would talk under her breath. Nick
even commented that she seemed to think they were all idiots. This lack of trust and respect had
everyone in the company either talking behind her back or unwilling to open up fully to her. At
times it seemed as if everyone was afraid of how she would react.
Next I want to take a moment to discuss Mikey’s negative world view and how it affected
the team. This also plays big into the victim role that she clearly portrays in my opinion. Mikey’s
constant negative remarks clearly had an effect on the team. Every time a good momentum
started and she made a snide remark it almost destroyed any progress that had been made. This
made other team members feel like she didn’t care about what they said or their opinions. This
2. lack of respect had a definite dampening effect on Kathryn’s efforts .The negativity seemed to
spread like wildfire once it came into play. When Katheryn finally told her things weren’t
working out she immediately made Katheryn into a persecutor. If she did that to her boss then I
can only imagine how she treated her subordinates.
Also Mickey had a clear lack of accountability for her behavior, she always seemed to
place the blame elsewhere. I attribute some if not all of this to her being a single loop learner.
This was very apparent during the last interaction between Katherine and her. Although she had
attended several offsite team work meetings she never saw the broader view of how her actions
affected the team. She remained focused on herself and on her own success.
Mickey also seemed to always be seeking self-recognition, which I think greatly
contributed to the team’s inattention to results. By her always saying she was the only reason her
department succeeded, she created a deep seeded contempt for her amongst everyone even
though no one dared to admit it. In the end I feel letting her go was the best decision for the
company.
Analyzing Nick
Nick really seemed to rely on the use of politics to do everything, He seemed to only care about
advancing his own career. He had a real problem with bloating his own ego and had somewhat of a
superiority complex. And in my opinion showed a real lack of commitment to anything that didn’t
directly benefit his power and position in the company.
One of the best examples of him using politics was when he tried to pitch buying Green Banana.
He knew that if he obtained the company it would benefit his own careered or so he thought. He tried
so hard to tell and convince everyone that the acquisition was what the company wanted as to try to
persuade them that he knew what was best due to his experience. This in my opinion came of as very
arrogant. There was a reason why the board of directors hadn’t immediately jumped on the
3. opportunity. He should have utilized his talent to approach his team of executives in a manner that
encouraged an educated decision. Instead due to his concern for his own benefit he offended several
people.
Now I will give Nick this is that he was more of a double loop learner and seemed to learn from
his mistakes. After talking to Kathryn he did take her advice and returned to not only to apologize but to
explain his reasons for behaving that way. When he did this I believe he created a new sense of trust
among his pears. He had taken the time to absorb what Katheryn had said and took an approach that
made him become closer with his team. Tis strengthening of bonds will eventually benefit the company
when difficult decisions have to be made because everyone has that trust.
Also He showed a new sense of accountability when he owned up to his behavior. By taking
ownership his teammates probably he had a strong belief in honesty and integrity. It also showed that
he was committed to the success of his peers and the company as a whole.
I also believe he had a slight fear of conflict because it wasn’t until Katheryn met with him
privately that he finally admitted to feeling underutilized and board. If he had approached the team
much earlier, they could have put his talents top use in other areas of the business.
Now at some point Nick must have realized what he had been doing was contributing to the
problem with the company. Now he started acting like a true leader and modified his behavior and
engaged the whole team in the end. This also led me to believe that he either did already have or gained
a good amount of emotional intelligence. Once he realized how wrong he had been he found an
appropriate fix to the behavior.
In the end their team became much stronger even though it had been a tough process to get
there.
