Gulf: tourism to prosper over next
decade
Italian operators pursuing Gulf clientele at ATM in Dubai

(ANSAmed) - DUBAI, MAY 7 - Tourism continues to be a growth
sector in the Gulf oil monarchies
this year and will continue to
prosper over the coming decade thanks to massive infrastructural
investments, according to the latest World Travel and Tourism
Council (WTTC) economic impact
report.
"The map of regional tourism has changed enormously, with
the sector now directly contributing
58.3 billion euros to area
GDP in 2013", Travel Exhibition Director Mark Walsh told
reporters at the
opening of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in
Dubai. "That figure will increase by an estimated
4.2%", he
added.
The United Arab Emirates are currently the leading model for
regional tourist development, with the
sector accounting for 14%
of national GDP in 2012 (against a regional average of 9%).
Tourism will add another 3.2% to GDP in 2013.
The fastest-growing economy in the Gulf, Qatar, has already
made investments of 50 billion euros
ahead of the 2022 World
Cup, translating into an additional 85,000 hotel rooms. Saudi Arabian
tourism, of a more internal and religious
kind, is also on the rise, with infrastructural investments of
61 billion euros. Oman is also putting money into the tourism sector, to the
tune of 30 million euros
to develop Dhofar province and the
Khareef Festival in hopes of making it a must stop on the
regional calendar. Italian operators eager for a slice of the wealthy Gulf
market are also making
their road shows at the ATM, pushing
renowned destinations such as the Emerald Coast and
Cortina
d'Ampezzo as well as more off-beat itineraries.
Roberto Orilieri from the Allegro Italiano hotel chain is
promoting Turin and the Puglia Faraglioni to
a ''tailored
luxury'' target. The Star Hotels chain is also pursuing a business clientele
"from Trieste
to Naples'', explains Star Hotels executive
Barbara Balestreri. Halal menus and rooms converted to
mosques
are some of the services on offer in the hopes of wooing Muslim
clients.
Another player is Regal Travel, which has been catering to
the sheikhs' holidays for seven years.
"The most expensive
packet we ever sold was a week in Sardinia for half a million
euros'',
executive Theresa Al Wadi revealed. (ANSAmed).
