PARIS—January24,2013—GE’s PowerConversion(NYSE:GE)business has startedfittingthe latest
generationof IntegratedPlatform ManagementSystem (IPMS)to the Royal FleetAuxiliary (RFA)
ships WAVE KNIGHT and WAVE RULER.
The technologywill extendthe life and versatilityof the IPMS fitted to the two ships, helping the RFA
to maintainessentialat-seasupplycapabilities, vital for supporting the Royal Navy’s global
maritime operations.
The IPMS is critical to the effective performance of manyof the ships’basic functions as it includes
machinerycontrol and surveillance, damage surveillance and control, electricalpower control and
managementandReplenishmentatSea(RAS)functions.
The currentupdate is a carefully plannedprogram in which GE will coordinate with the RFA and
with the selectedshipyardto decommissionthe previous generationequipmentandreplace it in
phases to suiteach ship’s ongoing operational commitments. The workis expectedtobe
completedby early 2014.
The newIPMS complements the electricpowerand propulsionsystem onthe ships as it was
originally deliveredby GE (at that time Alstom PowerConversion)duringtheir constructionin 2002.
The IPMS update will maintain the core functionality of the original design;will manage component
and system levelobsolescence, while providingan opportunity to enhance the system withnew
features including GE’s DIRAD system whichis setto be installedon Wave Ruler.
The DistributedInformationRecording and Display (DIRAD)system is essentiallyanelectronic
damage control incident board system.Ituses straightforwardgraphics to display damage control
and firefighting incidents of all types in stations distributedthroughoutthe ship.DIRAD will be
embeddedwithinWave Ruler’s IPMS operatorHumanMachine Interface (HMI) as a part of the
current update program, therebygiving the RFA a trial fit for evaluation.
The choice of hardware and design of the IPMS system architecture have beenguided by the
operationalrequirementtoinstall newequipmentwith minimaldisruptionto the existingsystem
and cabling. The replacementIPMS will be built and testedatone of GE’s U.K. testfacilities before
being deliveredto the ship. Each elementofthe replacementsystemwillbe testedunder
simulationprior to delivery in order to reduce the riskof incompatibilitywith the existingship
systems.

“By replacing and updating the currentIPMS systems,GE is helping to ensure thatthe RFA has
access to the latesttechnologyin a proven system thatis expandable and flexible enough to be
adaptedin line with future changes in the ships’capability,” said Barry Carr, manager,Naval
Service for GE’s PowerConversionbusiness.“This upgrade will improve and modernize the ships’
systems withacost-effective solutionthat provides much fastercontrol response while also
improving reliability and extendingservice life.”
The Wave class fast fleetreplenishmenttankers are operatedbythe RFA and are designedto
supportRoyal Naval warships worldwide.Built to a commercialstandardwith military
requirements beingincorporatedonly where required, their primary role is replenishmentatsea.
However, witha large helicopterflight deck, ability to deploy smallboats and being fitted withclose
in weapons systems,theyare versatile vessels.
