- The field of ML and NN research started out in the UK with funding from the government going to institutions. This began with some published papers
- However, progress stalled after a few years. The government pulled funding to most institutions, and the era known as the AI Winter began.
- Things progressed slowly for a while, with IBM Deep Blue defeating Gary Kasparov providing some much needed publicity and a boost to the field.
- All of the advancements in ML were made possible by the availability of large storage and massive computing resources
- And to deliver on that mission we have a lot of product areas at Google We have used ML in many of our products for several years, but recently it has been an increasingly been an important part of how we make great products for users
- Machine Learning helps with conservation efforts in Africa, such as with the Smart Parks project that puts collars on elephants.
- In Agriculture: In dairy farming a cows health is vital to the survival business and Connecterra a company in the Netherlands wondered if they can use Machine Learning to keep cows healthy by tracking behaviors and being able to provide insights to farmers and veterinarians on actions to be taken to ensure happy, healthy cows with higher yields. So now, happy cows come not only from California but also from the Netherlands
- Fighting Climate Change and protecting our forests: Many of us believe that technology has a huge role to play in fighting climate change. Recently a group of engineers and scientists have built a real time detection and alerting system to detect logging of trees. They use real time data from many many devices to listen to chainsaws and logging sounds. Machine Learning is fighting deforestation and saving our rainforests.
