ASSIGNMENTS
1. P-mutagenesis in Drosophila-a searching tool for novel gene.
Project Summery
Mobile elements (P-ELEMENT) were first used as a mutagenesis tool that introduces a
molecular tag in the genes of interest. This facilitated subsequent molecular cloning and
eventually promoted molecular analysis of a large number of fly genes. P-elements were
modified to detect genes not only based on a mutant phenotype but rather through
revealing RNA or protein expression patterns (enhancer trap, gene trap). Owing to the
typically imprecise mobilization of the P-elements these enhancer trap or gene trap
insertions also provided means to generate (excision) mutants.

2. 2. Bioinformatics project on Alzheimer’s diseased gene using Drosophila as a model
organism.
Project Summery
My work was regarding presenilin gene (located on chromosome 14) among all genes
responsible for Alzheimer’s disease. The official name of this is ‘presenilin 1’.Out of 59
human neurological genes surveyed, including ‘presenilin gene’,38 appear to be conserved
in Drosophila .so I took the gene that encodes for the protein that seems to be important in
causing Alzheimer’s disease human and introduced it into the fruit fly. Then, by using
bioinformatics software and tools I made a homology report for the conserved sequence of
presenilin gene for both human and Drosophila.
