7. CHAPTER I
Background of the Study
Poverty is one of the current issue here in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, particularly here
in Bgy. San Jose. There’s a lot of Palaweño's are experiencing this kind of problem and the most
affected are children’s especially students. This problemcan affect the Academic Performance of
selected Grade11 HUMSS Students in San Jose National High School.
Based on https://Compassion.Com "Poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty
is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not
knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time.
Poverty is losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water. Poverty is powerlessness, lack
of representation and freedom."
This issue cannot easily to solve because our society and community are experiencing a
very critical problem, students that are experiencing this problem are also have difficulties in
their study in terms of payments in school, everyday life and alsothe income in that their parents
have received. This evaluation needs survey and questionnairs for those students that are
experiencing poverty,that can affect their studies and everyday life therefore, we know the
different causes why the Grade11 HUMSS Students of SJNHS are experiencing this problem.
The students that are experiencing this kind of difficulties in terms of their study such as
they need to pay some requirements, projects and other expenses in school therefore it can
affect their studies in order for them to go in school every day.
This research will also help to identify the possibilities why this difficulty affects the
studies of the selected students.
Statement of the Problem

b. Sex
c. Civil status
d. Number of members in the family

This study will focuses to selected students of San Jose National High School specifically to
Grade 11 Student with the total of 177 HUMSS students Section A,B,C only 50% of the learner
will be our the respondents.
There are 177 or 50% respondents 50% in the selected in HUMSS students.
